Favorite 100g Turnout Blanket - 2022 edition

I really like Centaur for these guys. They’re often to be had for not much $$, they hold up well, and they fit those narrow horses really nicely.

I had a few for a 3 yo I picked up off the track. He was like a fish he was so narrow! All but disappeared if you looked at him head on, poor guy

Lol, the Amigo 250g that I just picked up for my girl fits like that on her too. She’s an Arab cross with a cute, but short, neck. The hood came with the blanket so I don’t have much of an option on sizing so I hope she doesn’t mind too much! It just looks a little silly out in the field.

Thanks for the suggestion, I forgot about Centaur.

I was browsing used blankets but people are asking high prices for them, and in many cases I can just by the new (and therefore in better condition and clean) version for not much more. Maybe it’s just the time of year. I didn’t plan on blanketing, originally.

It’s been years since I went shopping for horse blankets so I have no recommendations for OP other than the Weatherbeeta blankets our horse and pony had way back when, except that next time I would buy a blanket with chest snaps plus the buckles so once you get the right hole you don’t have do any more buckling with frozen or gloved fingers.

But @ltmac I am glad you posted that link as I am having a great time reading it with my high school and college (US) German. Apparently nowadays Sie und Ihnen has been replaced with Du und Dir (which was du and dir 50 odd years ago?). Was just talking about this sort of thing last night on the phone with a friend my age who studied German as long ago as I did.

Cool blankets BTW! No pun intended (well, maybe just a bit).

My narrow yearling really did well in the Saxon blankets (this is a sheet, but he had a blanket the same size). Inexpensive and held up really well. I washed it after winter and it still looked brand new. Everything else that fit him size-wise hung clear to his knees.

I’m really appreciative of the 100g blankets today! Below freezing temps last night, then upper 40s turning into afternoon rain. Everyone seemed comfortable in both conditions. And as I was hoping, the 100g blankets seem a little cooler wearing than a 100g liner + sheet, so everyone seemed to stay more comfortable in the warmer daytime weather before the rain came.

I’m hoping I can use my 100g blankets and my sheets most days and hopefully only pull out the mediums and heavy’s in the worst of weather.

That’s sort of my plan for blanketing as well.

There’s no where within a few hours of me to really buy blankets, so I have to order them, generally. My 100g and 200g and 150g (in a size up, for growing reasons) have not arrived yet. Shipping is sloowww.

Last night my yearling wore what I assume to be a “no name” brand sheet from Amazon because I could get it in his size and on time. We had rain, wind, snow, and cold, so I think this helped him. The sheet is a Challenger but looks just like a Tough-1 with a belly strap. It was $70.00 so I can’t complain. He’s about to outgrow it soon, anyway. It’s hard because he’s almost out of a 68 but a 72 sort of pulls funny due to being a bit large. At least it kept him dry.

Sorry to laugh at your woes but

I think we have a club going for owners of horses that get strangled by blankets!

I’ve done like you and remodeled the top chest closure on blankets in an attempt to relieve the strangled look. The Kensington I just got has super adjustable front buckles but so far horse is still getting squished if he puts his head down.

My 100gms got the most use last year with the mild winter here. I’m thinking this year will be the same.

I did get an Eskadron Alpha blanket from Rideaway and the quality is nice for around $80 or so. It’s just a fleece lined sheet in a size up from his existing sheet.

I’m glad that someone mentioned the Chick’s blankets because those came up in my search too. They look comparable to the Tough-1 blankets that I see everywhere.

I’m normally diehard Rambo, but again, growing yearling, and eventually he will fit into my Rambo collection.

I have the opposite problem to most at the moment, because mine shot upward but his neck and shoulders still seem fairly narrow. Due to his breeding, this is not likely to last though!

Oops wrong thread!

The tough 1 and shires knockoffs are like $10-15 and just as good!

Am I the only one who has issues with the tail strap on the Rambo/Amigo blankets? I love their durability and quality, and I absolutely loved the liner system for my old guy. But with my current 2, my pony mare pees on the tail strap and ends up scalding her legs. But without the tail strap, the blankets shift and half come off. For my gelding, he sometimes has fecal water, and same problem, he ends up messier with that tail strap. I’m starting to shift away from the rambos and am slowly replacing with standard surcingle blankets with leg straps.

That was my mare, then she’d either flip up over her shoulders and shimmy out or just graze with a very heavy hood on. Leg straps all the way for her.

Yes! I have the same problem.

I posted here about it a few years ago and people made me feel like I was the only idiot on the planet who has the issue. :joy:

Thinner tail cords (as opposed to the nylon strap) reduce splashing for my girls. Also, I use a lot Show Sheen and dry shampoo to combat any grossness.

Are you using the wipe clean tail strap?

I am, but it’s not the gross tail strap itself that bothers me, ANY tail strap in that location for her causes splashback onto her hind legs. And since there are no leg straps with these blankets, the tail strap is necessary to keep the blanket in place.

Well, count me in as an idiot! I did try some thinner cords, and the plastic one, but nope, not helpful. I was thinking it was maybe her anatomy? No matter, I’ve ordered her a 100 gram turnout from Schneiders:)

oh shoot, I found that one helped a bit.
