Favorite 100g Turnout Blanket - 2022 edition

Review after one night wearing the Kensington 100 gram.

The tail flap is weird. Like holds the blanket open in the back. It’s removable so I’ll try it without tail flap next time. The outer material is not bonded to the inner material and it moves oddly. After wearing it overnight it had shifted back enough that again my poor horse looks like he’s being strangled by a weak guy when he’s eating off the ground, a common theme in all blankets tried thus far. It’s very roomy in the shoulders though which is an improvement. The drop is kind of skimpy on my boy, another common theme.

I guess I’m going to try either a Rambo w v closure or the Amigo XL next. Probably the latter.

I was dead set on not trying the Amigo XL after my experience with the Mio but I finally did.

I got the v closure though, I don’t like the others on Horseware blankets.

It works on his big neck. Still shifts from side to side though but at least he doesn’t look choked v

I have an Amigo with disc closure and a Rhino Wig with v closure. All chokers.

Thanks for your reply about the XL. I saw an older one I guess on SLT with the straight closure, it’s cheaper but I’ll pass on it and spring for one with the v closure.

Any thoughts on whether this Wug is a good cut for this narrow, big-shouldered boy?

@Libby2563 Not a wug expert seeing as how I just bought my first two, but I think shoulder-wise you will be ok. It looks plenty generous through the neck and shoulder to my eye.

ETA: When he is walking it looks a bit more snug, but I don’t think it’s any more snug than my big mare’s Amigos are on her. She’s never had any issue. :woman_shrugging:

@lenapesadie Bummer the Kensington didn’t work out. I really love their fly sheets.

Big bummer. The Kensington fly sheet is the only thing that has “fit” my horse *perfectly”. Everything is else has been shades of imperfect. Either my horse is peculiarly shaped or I’m persnickety. Some of both? Saddle and strap goods fitting is also interesting

I love your blanket organization tip upthread; really spoke to my heart. I only have two horses so my heap is smaller. And on top of the trunks that could hold some of the blankets.

Tangent: I listed a blanket on FB today. It’s clean and in excellent shape. I’m trying to decide if I should half the price to try and get rid off it today or put it back in the pile. It’s currently artfully displayed on an antique tractor.

Keeping it real with the blanket organization! :joy:

Apart from the donkey, I’m blessed with an easy to fit herd in terms of blankets. Now, bridles are a different story… saddles too…

The wug looks great. Get a Bossys Bib if it starts to rub.

“It’s currently artfully displayed on an antique tractor.” I mean sell the tractor + rug as a conversation piece on your Etsy shabby chic store obvs. For twice their new value.

Thank you and @Xanthoria! The appearance when walking was my hang-up too but I managed to slip my hand in there today and it’s not as tight on the point of the shoulder as it looks. I think it’s a keeper. I do have a Bossy Bib if needed. I haven’t blanketed him yet this year but will need it if I have to clip or he seems cold. His coat isn’t fluffy like my other guys’ but man is it dense.

I can’t be parted from my tractor!!

I tossed the blanket back in the horse trailer though.

Yay for keeper blankets! Your horse is adorable

Here is the peculiar shaped horse in question. The blanket is an 84” and I bought the largest size hood per the sizing chart.

Obviously not professional photography here but … are his ears supposed to disappear?

Lol! How does it fit when his head is up/level? Does he have a short neck relative to his body? My hoods have never fit that long before.

When his head is up sometimes one ear gets stuck inside until he shakes. It’s funny looking but I worry it might bother him. I think his neck is a bit short! I’ll definitely be ordering “horse” sized hoods and not “over size” in the future!

Wow I need those for my saddle pads! Great idea.

That’s normal lol I sometimes flip the top part under inside.

The flat ones are amazing for saddle pads!

I’m definitely picking up some of those for my saddle pads and blankets. That’s a great idea.

I’m also open to suggestions on 100g (or more) blankets that fit an awkward yearling with no neck and narrow shoulders. He’s basically only grown upward and is in about a size 70"

I’ve got a Schneider’s and Tough-1 on order because they both have adjustable and maybe higher neck openings. I’m used to shopping for a more full bodied horse, so I’m out of my realm here… And he will probably outgrow his blankets in 5 min :joy:
