I like it thanks for sharing!
What’s with the ongoing ragging on Horseware? Many of us here are satisfied with them, and you aren’t. Why keep bringing it up?
Re: blanket storage - Our barn is pretty limited on hanging space for blankets so I was looking for a new stall front option. Came across this on Schneider’s a couple of weeks ago on sale for $50 and scooped it up.
Loving it so far. The small pocket easily holds 2 neck covers, a 100g liner, and a quarter sheet. Could probably fit a cooler in there too.
The large pocket currently has just a fly sheet, but could likely fit that plus a sheet and medium weight (or some other combination of blankets) without trouble.
I like that one too! Especially good as it would keep moisture and dust off blankets!
Alright, so I have a yearling that I’ll be blanketing this winter and I refuse to spend a lot of money on this endeavor due to the fact that he’s growing like a weed and I don’t know how hard or gentle he will be on his blankets. I have an extensive collection of Rambo and Amigo blankets from my last horse, so hopefully my yearling will get to a size 75 and can wear those eventually, but I think he will surpass that size, and I’ll have a bunch to sell he’s currently in a 66 or 68 (depends on the manufacturer). So I’ll be back to give my reviews on bargain blankets, and some are 100g.
I gave my 100g Rambo to my last horses new owner. I kick myself for that sometimes, but it was the best blanket, and he’s the best horse I hands down prefer Rambo and the HW liner system.
Any thoughts on Turtleneck turnouts? I got their flysheet for my mare this year – it was the only thing that fit her and wasn’t too warm. I like that her chest was basically completely covered.
She is old, but so are her blankets (all Rambos), and if I suddenly need to replace something, it would be nice to know ahead of time what I am ordering.
I am thinking Rain Turtle plus 100g and 200g liners, if I need to order something.
Oh thanks a lot! Like I need more boots and blankets But the prices are pretty irresistible!
I ordered the new Rambo Autumn from horseware on their 20% off sale last week. It finally shipped today and it is going to snow tomorrow so not sure I can share much feedback soon…but maybe it will warm up. I really like the idea.
I’m eagerly looking forward to your comments once you’ve had a chance to use it!
I’ve looked at it pretty hard. I’m in FL so I think it could bring a lot of value due to the breathability. I was a bit put off by the light color. I understand it’s compatible with Rambo’s regular liner system too!
I used to be a huge fan of the Rambos and Rhinos but stopped using them for several reasons:
- Tight in the shoulders
- Not adjustable - that v clip front is unforgiving so you have to buy the exact right size
- Guarantee is weak - 3 years for waterproofing and manufacturing defects only I think? My Duos got ripped up after 2-3 yrs…
Changed to Smartpack Ultimate blankets: gusseted shoulders, adjustable clip front, and a 10 YEAR GUARANTEE no matter what happens to the blanket. I mean…
Annoyingly they don’t make a 100g blanket but the Horseware and other liners fit under them great and haven’t moved despite not having a point to attach the neck Velcro to.
I don’t really see a place for the Rambo Autumn turnout in my collection.
I did buy a Schneider’s 100g due to the price and cut for my yearling. I am a big wary because the last one I bought many years ago was not waterproof, and it was one of their “best” turnouts.
Again, he’s growing and likely won’t get any Rambo blankets until he grows into the 75’s that I already have (he’s a 70 now) or there’s a screaming deal on a used one.
I do have a 100g Premiere Equine blanket that’s got an interesting either relief design and elastic around the neck cover opening, but man that thing is HEAVY when wet. It also has a liner system.
Aren’t the Horsewear liners great?
However I am hopefully moving away from using them regularly.
If the sun is out during the winter, my horses almost always get too warm in anything heavier than a no fill sheet. But at night or on damp days I really love those 100g liners, so I end up putting them on and taking them off a lot. Hoping the new 100g blankets can save me a step.
I use the 100 gram weight a ton on my horses and also found attaching a removing a liner from a sheet to be inconvenient. I’m curious about the Horsewear liners under other brand turnouts. They really stay put well?
Mine do. My horse lives in a 1/3 acre pen and runs around a lot. No problems.
Thank you! Mine rolls religiously and has the zoomies occasionally. Most winter nights he’s confined to a similar size dry lot.
Regarding blanket storage, I’ll share my system
I use these bags from IKEA:
I wash the blankets that need to be stored then fold them into one of the IKEA storage bags once they are ready. I can comfortably fit two 100-300g turnout blankets in one of the larger bags. Obviously more of the non-turnout blankets like coolers and sheets can fit into one bag. I put a dryer sheet between the blankets when they go into the bag to keep them smelling fresh. Then I store the bags in Husky trunks for the off-season; I can fit two bags of the weighted turnouts in one trunk, or more with the lighter blankets.
These bags also work really well for horse shows or travel. I put horse boots, saddle pads, etc. in these bags because they stack well in the Husky trunks. And the bags are fairly durable but cheap and easily acquired.
Good suggestion—I use those IKEA Dimpa bags for saddle pads and they’re great!
Has anyone tried the Amigo Stock Horse turnouts for horses that are wider through the chest? My TB wears a Rambo Quarter Horse that’s….12 years old now I think. I call it his medium but in reality it’s probably about 100 g, or maybe it’s just old and worn out lol. Valley Vet is selling the 200 g Amigo Stock Horse for only $120 right now and I’m tempted, although it’s only 600D: https://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=eb65daac-4816-4beb-9aec-8879ccb44773
This is apparently the only frontal pic I have handy :
He’s the bay on the right looking seriously unimpressed with his little brother’s sense of humor. I haven’t found a good blanket for the chestnut either. He is soooooo narrow with a big shoulder. He’s 4.5 so maybe someday he’ll have a chest? I ordered a Wug for him on sale earlier this year but I’m not sure about the fit.
Blanket storage in the off season isn’t as much as a problem for me. It’s blanket storage when they are in use, as each horses generally has 3-4 blankets they use semi-regularly depending on conditions.
However, after a lot of thought and consideration, I’ve developed this system for my small space:
