Favorite...ahem...undies?

I have the very delicate problem of developing saddle sores in the heat, especially during a lesson when we’re working pretty hard. I’ve found that anti-chafe helps but I made the mistake of wearing cotton underwear during today’s lesson and while it wasn’t ‘HOT’ it was in the mid-80s and very sunny. I’m definitely suffering from the lapse of good judgement.

I’m thinking maybe bike short type or something padded?

Does anyone have something they can recommend?

I and my derriere thanks you

No cotton, ever! Also avoid anything with elastic added in the legs. I was an “all cotton all the time” woman until I got some very bad rubs while wearing cotton undies for riding in the summer. I have to be careful about this stuff because I have had Type 1 diabetes for 40 years, and rubs don’t heal as quickly as they used to.

I personally don’t need anything padded, but have heard good things about JellyPantz.

I love Jockey’s Comfies for riding, which are microfiber and have no added elastic. So far I have never had a rub or chafing from them.

Haaahaa… sorry, I just had a flashback to my hunting days, when by the third fence my undies had generally disappeared up my backside. Made me so angry, I once dismounted and threw them behind a bush.

Had great luck with some very silky bike short type unders, dunno if they still make them or not.

I’m loving Fitknix undies to ride in, they have different styles, and good coverage.

I have been pleasantly surprised by the 6/$36 ones from Soma. They do have elastic, but they are a synthetic that seems to wick well unlike cotton. For riding, I much prefer the brief or high leg to boy shorts. The crotch on the boy shorts is wider and bunches under breeches.

No advice, just sympathy. I get AWFUL “rope burn” if I wear the wrong undies on no-stirrups days…I thought I’d figured out which pairs I could manage with but recently my favorite microfiber no-seam panties gave me rubs! So upsetting.

I wear stuff like this on hot days

I always wear cotton panties, for riding I’ve found that Hanes boxer briefs for women are most comfortable. They’re long enough that they don’t ride up and I’m not sitting directly on a seam. It’s entirely possible that I wouldn’t be able to wear those to ride, though, were I not using the best product in the world: Anti-Monkey Butt Powder. Used just like baby powder, but a million times better than baby powder. I’ve tried so many anti-chafing products (Body Glide, etc) and absolutely nothing else works anywhere near as well.

For me, bike short lengths in more technical fabrics have been the solution to this issue. Like North Dakota, I’m a big fan of Knixwear, especially their FitKnix Air pieces. I also really like Smarty Pants, which are a thicker fabric than the FitKnix but dry faster than cotton http://www.doversaddlery.com/smarty-pants-underwear/p/X1-35888/.

You guys are great! I do use Body Glide so I’ll get some Anti Monkey Butt Powder and see if that helps with some of these options.

I appreciate the links!

victoria’s secret has these silky, seamless undies, i don’t know what they’re called but i picked up a few a few years ago and they have been my go-to… they are very comfy lightweight and don’t have any seams or stitching.

Seamless boy shorts are my favorite for summer riding. Ones like this:

or these

These, and some Kerrits tights - I can ride in 90+ degree weather for hours (although we are blessed with low humidity here).

I wear these for long distance runs, where you can have the same chafing problems the op has. They’re one size fits all, which I normally hate, but they stay put, and are neither too tight nor too loose. They’re quite comfortable and really feel like you’re not wearing anything.

I wear Under Armour when I hunt. Makes a huge difference for those long rides!

I love these for riding.

I second Knixwear. I do long distance/endurance riding and I can’t wear any other underwear.

Jockey Skimmies wicking Slipshorts http://www.jockey.com/catalog/product/2115 Great under pants, too, although they are not quite as “slippery” under pants as I would love.

Last summer, out of the blue, I started having the worst time with this. It was every day a new part of my butt and/or privates, no matter what I did. Even inot fall when it wasn’t that hot! I tried many recommendations from the famous “Inverness” thread as well as other COTH threads including:

  • Anti-monkey butt powder
  • Astroglide (not at the same time as the powder!)
  • Jelly Pantz
  • these underwear
  • Bicycle shorts liners (Andiamo, I think)
  • Pantyhose
  • Commando

Nothing really helped. Didn’t matter which horse, though one is very flat and the other has a lot of motion. My Vega seemed to be worse than my dressage saddle, and my newer FITS were the worst offenders. The older FITS didn’t seem as bad. I’m not sure if they changed their fabric at some point.

I’ve only ridden a few times so far this year, but other than sticking to my old FITS, I haven’t done anything special and no rubs at all. So who freaking knows.

I used some mid-thigh length riding panties but cannot remember the maker. They were not padded but had a larger crotch panel that extended more up the rear, like full seat breeches. They were a nylon / cotton/spandex combo

It was one of the few concessions I made to getting a designed for riding item.

they were great. Absolutely ended the chafing, pimples and rubs. wore them year round

doing a little hedge trimming helped in spots too. Not removal, just keeping some of the long branches trimmed shorter.

Anti monkey butt powder + boxer briefs (or boyshorts for the ladies) are my summertime staple. I wear boxer briefs year-round, but the powder is a must once temperatures reach 20C.

I also agree that a bit of trimming, but not full lawn mowing, is helpful too. I find I am rubbed way worse whdn the lawn is completely mowed vs maintaining a medium length. It also gives the powder a bit of extra staying power since it doesn’t just end up on your underroos as soon as you put them on!

If you hava rubs already, gold bond medicated powder is soothing and gives a bit of a slippery layer between skin and clothes too. I apply it under and between my chesticles before going outside in the summer to prevent heat rash and to keep me a bit cooler thanks to the menthol.
