Favorite dog rug/ blanket?

We recently got a 6mo old puppy who looks to be lab/ greyhound. AKA not a lot of fur.

It can often be in the negatives in the morning.

So, I would like to get her a rug/ blanket.

This would be for walking/ hiking, looking cute etc.

What do you recommend?

I have wussy dobermans. My favorites are:

https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/b/3877 They all have one of these. Very durable, light weight, still water proof a few years later.

https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/b/1971 I use this or a rambo fleece to layer on cold days.

https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/b/13594 This one is a weatherbeeta, I havent bought one in years but the one I do have is literally ten years old and has been through multiple dogs. Its still kicking.

https://www.facebook.com/MadebyMeadowCat/?fref=ts We refer to these as their “jammies” and they wear them inside, on dry days or under a waterproof layer. The dogs seems to find them very comfortable, the one particularly wussy one will straight leg you if she doesn’t want to take it off

For outdoor coats, I like K9 Apparel

For indoor pajamas or as extra warmth outside, I like Fido Fleece orRC Pets.

I just moved my hound mix from Florida to Oregon. He is freezing most of the time, poor guy. I would not order a dog blanket with out first checking the fit. I purchased and returned 2 because they just didn’t fit him. The length was correct, but he was swimming in them. Think of the difference between at TB and a draft. Both might measure the same along the topline, but two very different body shapes when it comes to blankets.

The Rambo/Amigo ones fit my dog best (she’s longer than she is deep and most other brands assume all long dogs weigh 100lbs)…

The Hurtta ones are pretty awesome too…

If the puppy looks like it’s going in to be pretty wasp waisted, like a greyhound, I would suggest one that has crossed surcingles, like a horse blanket. My big dog is pretty wasp waisted, with a big, deep chest, and blankets with only one strap around her middle NEVER stay put. I’ve had the best luck with the one I got her from Dover, that looks like a Dover rug, with two crossed surcingles. Another style that works seems to be one that has a bib front…it has a closed front with a bib that goes between her front legs, wraps around her chest, then fastens across her back. I’ve only seen that style in Back on Track dog blankets, though.

That’s how the Hurtta blankets fasten

Ruffwear is my favorite! They make excellent blankets that hold up really well to outdoor adventures.

Good to know!

Hasn’t been my experience at all :frowning: Ruffwear lasted less than a week around here, and my dogs don’t seem to be hard on their other clothes.

I like the ones from Saratoga Horseworks

I have the blankets, harness and backpack all have held up to serious hiking/backcountry fun. I love all of my ruffwear stuff and my dog does as well. He is a Boxer mix and the only thing that doesn’t cause rubs is the ruffwear stuff.

Chilly Dogs, Voyagers K9 Apparel, Hurtta. The Greyhound people have heavy duty coats locked down. The term “blankets,” in the dog world, confuses people.

In my experience, most of the horse-manufactured ones fit less well, cuz hey a dog isn’t a tiny horse, than the dog specialty companies.

My last dog was female and grew almost no belly fur at all, so I used what I think was the older version of this one on her: https://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=d4cfcc5a-d0db-4e9b-98cc-7dc3deb56c07&sfb=1&itemguid=166a4b0b-3f99-41b8-8993-81dbf3cdeedd&utm_content=28975&ccd=IFP003&mr:trackingCode=3A897455-3955-E411-9F62-001B21631C34&mr:referralID=NA&mr:device=c&mr:adType=plaonline&mr:ad=42125723923&mr:keyword=&mr:match=&mr:tid=aud-206556260203:pla-103008368683&mr:ploc=9018920&mr:iloc=&mr:store=&mr:filter=103008368683&gclid=CIbgi5eyjdACFZOKaQodmlwLuA

It was definitely a Weatherbeeta with that style of velcro on it.

ETA: It was actually this one, which is very similar, but not as heavy duty and with fleece lining instead of fill. https://www.valleyvet.com/ct_detail.html?pgguid=5fd4d6dd-0d47-4ffe-a78b-e96a1aacba40

For the coldest days I layer a fidofleece under a horse blanket style coat since my Mastiff has no belly hair.

Looking at this last website I am definitely going to look for one with reflecting strips on it - what with the days getting shorter, and darker. Just in case she goes AWOL.

Great links!

None of the size charts seem close to fitting our puppy who appears to be a Greyhound Lab cross. I am now eyeing the pile of turnout rugs from my horse who passed away this summer and starting to think about getting crafty. I could make a blanket for each of my dogs out of a turn out!

Those are interesting since they are by breed- my dog probably looks most like a German Shorthair Pointer dimension wise. Although a little narrower.

Well my dog has a lot of “blankets”…

– a Rambo with the belly warm strap. It is good, the velcro is not good, and doesn’t stay shut very well but that is the only complaint
– several WeatherBeta ones, with fill and no fill
– the Dover fleece, which is fabulously warm

I prefer the Velco closure vs the horse blanket buckle type-- easier to get on/off

I don’t think this will be an issue for you since you have a Greyhound/Lab, but the blankets that have fleece directly on the dog make curly hair dogs hair get matted much more than the blankets with the silky inside.

The outdoor coat from them is really awesome, and it’s one of the warmest I’ve been able to find.

Their fleece undercoats are okay, but I prefer the Fido Fleece or RC Pets stuff instead.

The boots are totally worthless. Save your money if you are considering the full package.

I think they do custom stuff, too, based on your dog’s measurements?
