Favorite DURABLE Breeches

What is some of your favorite pairs of durable breeches? I’m looking to add some upgrades to my collection and want to know what some of the favorites are. I’ve been riding in solely pipers for the last year and they’ve all developed holes or patches that will soon become holes so I’m hoping to find a more durable style. I ride 4-6 days a week, usually just one horse, but I’d like my breeches to last more than a year! Maybe that’s too much to ask??

Anyway, I’m open to hearing all suggestions! I’d like to stay around the $150/pair price range, but can splurge a bit more for something really good!

I am picky about fit, but have settled on Pikeur Luganos and Cavallo Candy as a good fit for my body plus very good wear. Obviously others might prefer other models but I think they are good brands. I’ve found my Pikeur online from Britain at a huge discount, they were CAN $130 which would be under USA $100. I get the Cavallo from Equestrian Factory Outlet for CAN $130 to $190, which would be under US $150.

I ride almost every day, one or two hours. I started out with Greenhawk house brand (Greenhawk is the Canadian Dover) and wore holes in the full seats in under a year. Better quality makes a huge difference. The Greenhawk breeches were $89 but I kept having to throw them out.

I really like my pair of romfhs! They look lovely after several months of very heavy use in different weather!

Out of Ariat, Kerrits, FITS, SmartPak, and Tailored Sportsman, I think my Romfhs have aged the best.

My faves that are often going 7-9 years with washing after each use are Ovation Euroweave DX full seats. List price is usually $89-$96, but can often be found on sale closer to $69 if you keep your eyes open.

I got a couple pairs of these more than 10yrs ago because they were on ridiculously low (~$20/pr IIRC) sale from Dover.
They get worn for schooling & hacking & so far no wear that affects being able to show in them.
Caveat: they run large

Glad to know I’m not the only one who’s Pipers are wearing holes. I bought a full seat pair over the winter and had to toss them this month because the holes were so bad, and that’s not my first pair that’s done that. I only have one horse and wore those a couple times a week.

To their credit, I sent Smartpak a photo and told them what happened, and while they wouldn’t refund me, they offered me 30% off on any brand. I had wanted to try the Hadley’s, and so far they feel more durable, but time will tell. I like the ROMFH Champion breeches too.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Smart Pak Alexa breeches fro schooling. They are basically knockoffs of TS but with the elastic ankle instead of Velcro closures. The price ran around the same but they would always be included in the SP brand sales they have like every month.

Then of course, they had to go and discontinue them and only make the Pipers, which I hate and do not fit. I can’t believe it! I know this doesn’t help anyone, but I’ve been wondering if anyone else was devastated when they dropped the line.

Luckily I bought about four extra pairs when they discontinued the line, all priced super super cheaply. Six pairs, I ride daily, and even the pairs I bought four years ago are still going strong.

Romfh Sarafinas and anything Pikeur.

I have a tan pair of Romfh Sarafinas I’ve been wearing to death for 2 years and they are still show-worthy. Once I banged my knee on something at the barn and when I got home realized I’d broken the skin and was bleeding… but my breeches hadn’t ripped. I don’t even know how that’s possible!

The Equine Couture Champions wear like iron. Not the most flattering fit for me, but the fabric really holds up.

Thanks for the responses, everyone!

I thought about the Pikeurs for a minute but they were significantly over what I wanted to spend. And I’m also in the market for a new saddle so budget is everything right now! But there seemed to be an overwhelming support for the Romfh’s, so I ordered a couple pairs. I tried out two different styles - the sarafinas and the champions. It looks like the champions are high rise while the sarafina is mid-rise, and in this post-baby body I lean more towards high rise these days ;). Anyway, I’m really excited for them to come! They should be here Monday and I’m REALLY hoping they fit - we are headed to a show next week and the Pipers I normally run XC in are hole-y. Fingers crossed!

My RJ Classics have held up great from years of abuse. My pipers get holes but the other Smartpak brands (Alexus and Bradley) have held up great!

I look at it this way: I may spend over my budget on Pikeurs, BUT they last so well that I’ve saved in the end because they’ve lasted 3 times [or more] longer than a breech 1/2 the price did, so I got an extra 1/2 cheap breech out of them. I hope the Romfh’s work the same way for you.

Pikeur.

Good deals on Pikeur.

oh wow, nice! Is there a particular style that is a “favorite”?

It’s really going to depend on your body type. I wear the Luganos which are natural high waist. Which is what you wanted, right? I would never have bought Pikeur if I’d had to pay full price!

I have been very impressed with USG and ELT breeches the last few years. Harder to find, but they wear nicely.

I have to give a huge shout out to Buckwild Breeches, I showed last Sunday with a heat index of 106 and they kept me comfortable, dry and happy!!! I don’t know how long they will last but I was so impressed I bought another pair. Check them out. I normally ride in Fits love the techtreads and free flex. I can say my tropical riders last a good 5 years before showing wear and I ride 6 days a week.
