Favorites from the 60's and 70's!!

Okay all you baby boomers!! Here’s your chance to see if dementia has set in yet! Who were your favorite horses, riders and ponies from the 60’s and 70’s? I was showing in that era and will always remember certain ones…

Not Always w/Rodney Jenkins in the regular working hunters
Idle Dice also with Rodney but in the Open Jumpers (he was young then!)
Leonka with Claudia Camillaci in the junior hunters
Drew Davenport in the Eq - she was deaf and rode with Ray Francais. She was fabulous!
Lansonette with Pam Carmichael in the junior hunters - they crashed and burned a lot when she forst got her but once they clicked, there was no beating them!

We didn’t have pony divisions in our area (upstate NY) back then so I can’t honestly say I remember any favorite ponies. Maybe some of you can jog my memory from the bigger shows. In fact, I am sure you will help me remember lots of the OBGs!

Pam Carmichael is the mother of a very talented up and coming pont rider, Lily Keenan. If you haven’t heard of her yet, you will know her very soon.

My favorite was Idle Dice and Rodney Jenkins. I saw them at the Washington International Horse Show several times. Does anyone know any particulars on Idle Dice such as breeding, height, etc.?

More great 60’s and 70’s hunters

Sungirt
Shining Hour
Cap and Gown

Navy Commander

Sutton Place
Quiet Flite

And oh, what I wouldn’t give to watch Dave Kelley ride one more time! And Cappy Smith, and Gene Cunningham. . . .

Speaking of Dave Kelly-the BO where I board knew him and just recently obtained a pic from Kelly’s brother of Dave jumping a man being held by two other men. The man being jumped looks to be about 3’6" to 4’ off the ground. Kelly is jumping the man behind some barn with some spectators standing along the shedrow. The horse and rider are picture perfect. It is a great picture. What would the stewards say today-LOL!

Rodney on anything in the 70’s-especially Idle Dice. Rumour has it that he rode 1800 trips at Devon one year-I don’t know if it was true, but if it is it is pretty impressive!

I will watch for any mention of Lily, I loved watching Pam show Lansonette and Chance Step as a junior. And totally off the subject, I just bought the book Ultimate Horse Barns and saw pictures of your place PB, what an amazing facility you have, its gorgeous.

The ones I remember
Valhalla
Aldie Belle
Spindletop Showdown
Nutmeg Fayre
Peyton Place
Night Murmer
All sorts of Farnley and Lisceter ponies

i second on shenandoah opal she was one of the best pony hunters i have ever seen, i saw her loose a kid at a show who bounced off over a fence and she continued on down the line and in the perfect number of strides and jumped the next fence at the end of the line before she stopped and turned around to look for her rider. that was just too cool!!
