Illion and Jimmy Paxton
Stroller (the pony) and who was the rider from Great Britain?
Marion Coakes
Yes Janet! Stroller was amazing!!! 14.3 and he jumped the Grand Prix fences and won a lot! I was lucky enough to see him at the Royal Dublin Show in '69 and he knocked my sox off!
Lessonlady - why were you in IR in '69? I was there riding at Burton Hall - also attended RDS that summer. Marion Coakes, Iris Kellett - and Neal Shapiro’s Uncle Max, who’d been bought by a Brit.
Hey Lessonlady: Drew Davenports lovely grey’s name was something Birch, possibly Blue Birch.
Carol Shepard? A lovely dark mare. Swan Lake possibly?
I remember Carol - rode at Frohms. When I left, she had a bay gelding, Tom. But for some reason, Swan Lake rings a bell, too. Another teen there had a wonderful bay gelding, Wise Decision. LOVED that horse!
does anyone know where Casey Chamberlain is. I remeber she married Chuck Gore. Peter Gunn owned by Mr. Twichell and ridden by his niece Chee Chee. I broke East Point and Mid Flight a yearlings for the race track. Made better show horses with Dave Kelley !!!
Old thread, but I had to chime in to say that it probably took a future Olympic medalist to do well on Fantasy. I knew her in her later years, and she was still very opinionated even then.
For those who may not have heard, I’m sorry to report that Carol Shepard passed away towards the end of 2012 after lengthy health problems. Gone too soon.
I rode at Frohm’s at that time-Carols horse was Shadow Lake-also for earlier posts-Linda Reeds chesnut was Chapel Hill-would love to talk "old times"with anyone who was from Rochester area inmid 60’s early 70’s!
So very sorry to hear about Carol Shepard-do you have any other details?I knew Carol very well.
I like hearing about all these people I rode with. I remember Vicki Becker’s horse No Regrets - as well as all the others mentioned in this thread. For those reading this long-lived thread, I want to make a “shout out” to Sky Step Farm in Clinton, NY, the original riding home for many who joined the Young’s stable late - Jim and Lola Brock, the Toksus, the Serafinis, Claudia Tenney, and others all moved to the Youngs when Sky Step was sold. Not exactly in the Syracuse, Rochester, and Buffalo group, but the contingent from Clinton joined you at shows in all these places. So hello to memories we had at Sky Step Farm!
also sorry to hear about Carol Shepard with whom I competed and very much admired.
I don’t even know where to begin… Eugenie Cleland here, talk about horsing around LOL… I would like to start with Sky Step Farms, with a major shoutout to Mary Evans, Peggy Evans and Jean Evans. We bought our first pony Yankee Doodle Dandy, a Norwegian Dun, he was a top pony hunter for 5 years running and man did he teach me everything with help from Peggy and Mary. Bob Carridy(sp) was the major trainer there for years, Mary went to Skidmore and she got me into Skidmore and i played polo for 4 years and was on the equestrian team. I worked with Neil Shapiro in Latham NY, he was training trotters at the time but he also helped me with my grande prix horse Hopeful Bliss, we bought Bliss from Nancy Mclure. Neil also helped train our yearlings for the flat track in Saratoga, he was an excellent trainer! I bought Brock from Patty Tuttle who is alive and well in Amsterdam NY, i still am in touch with Patty. Brock was the #1jr. jumper in NY state in 1975, I gave him back to Patty and i moved on to my grande prix horse. Brock lived until he was 41 and used to jump out of the pasture to eat the bird seed… somethings don’t change LOL. Currently, I am coaching my daughter in equitation, with hopes she brings it like we all did! Loved reading all the memories - good and bad. A heart felt thanks to all in the Clinton area and everyone else reading in this chat! R.I.P to Carol Shepard, I adored her as a child, she was lovely. Does anyone remember her little Jack Russell named “Killer”? I saw Victor Hugo Vidal mentioned but what the hay happened to George Morris with the big “wooooop” in the ring, so the judge would know it was his kid. Is he still around?
One last quick story, Dr. Toksu loved a grey mare by the name of Blue Chip, Ted Roulston had this mare and Dr. T wanted to buy her. Ted named a price and Dr. T balked at the figure, not even a month later he asked about the mare again and Ted doubled the price… Needless to say Dr.T paid the price! LOL I loved Ted, he was the original Irish horseman. Also, does anyone know what happened to Paige Estes? She used to ride a pony named Dinky. Fabulous rider! How about Marnie Markowitz? Also a great eq rider until she got on Brock’s back and he jumped out the in gate with her! LOL. Gotta love it.
Also, does anyone know what happened to Paige Estes? She used to ride a pony named Dinky. Fabulous rider!
After Dinky she rode a bunch of ponies with “Page” in their name. Sports Page, Front Page are the two I remember. I used to see her mother when she was steward at Culpeper, But I do not know what Page did after she grew up.
