Favorites from the 60's and 70's!!

Auspicious

I had him first! Then he became famous. He came of the track in New Mexico where Jerry Dougherty bought him. I had him for several months then Kay Love bought him from Jerry. Kay also owned Fleet Apple as well as Black Irish ( think that was his name.) He was champion of the country in the juniors or the working. Lisa Jaquin was reserve in the Medal on him.

Does anyone remember the pony “Dance On Ice”? I found him giving a clinic in Nevada. If the old owners only knew what became of their old pony!

Californians should know these:

Sutton Place (Champ Hough?)

and East Point and Gemini - Ridden by Jimmy Williams - both gorgeous bay w/white trim hunters

Mad Moment (Jimmy Williams)

Tin Lizzie (Marcia Williams)

Crocodile (Twinkie Nissen) Appaloosa Open Jumper

Sutter’s Show Boy (Pancho Frankel, then Richard Heilmann) Appaloosa Open Jumper

Terrry Rudd & Brenton’s Reef
Ann Coslett and…Geez, the name of the gray mare is on the tip of my tongue and I just cannot come up with it!!!
Black Angus–open jumper at Devon ( a New Holland find as I recall)

How about steeple chasers–Leed’s Don, of course Jay Trump

I’ll be testing my brain for a while on these…!

Fleet Apple was Kusner’s ride at the Munich Olympics in '72, so he would have been late 60’s for Kay to have had him.

Anyone heard of Page Torchiana? She taught me when I was a kid, and I know she did ponies at Devon a lot (saw the newspaper clippings and ribbons), but have no idea is she was well known at all. And that is how she spells her first name, not a typo.

Fleet Apple

Kay owned him when Kathy rode him in the Olympics. I think she retired him on her ranch in Nogales. I am sure he wasn’t sold. She also had a gray horse that showed in the jumpers. I think he was loaned to the team, also.

I remember them all…was it Sutter’s Show Boy or Sutter’s Show Boat?

And what about High Hopes?

See if you remember any of these '60’s horses from Long Island:

Maddy I remember Kin Can and Ad Lib, I love your natural release, that and the old show grounds of North Shore and Piping Rock are making me very nostalgic for the old days of good eq and real hunter fences.

All favorites of mine, I didn’t think anyone else remembered Betsy Gerson’s Red Shoes.

Bac thanks for the kind compliments, they are appreciated!

I too remember Red Shoes!

Sutton Place…ooooh he was gorgeous!

Jimmy Williams, the best! I remember him bringing his riders to MSG and doing the bridleless exhibition with 8 - 10 riders…fabulous (must have been 61 or 62 maybe?).

I remember that too!!!

Neat N Tiday was James Hulick’s chestnut pony, Nancy Baroody had a roan by the name of Pride N Joy. Another roan pony in those days was Deborah Bonwit Cahn’s Prim N Proper.

Sutter’s Show Boat was a son of Sutter’s Show Boy. Show Boy was the one shown as an Open Jumper, circa 1965. I believe Show Boat was imported into England and was VERY popular there, but only stood at stud a season or two before he died. The line is still, I understand, much prized among
British “Spotted Horse” breeders.

Oh yea, another California one: Tom Blakiston and “The Deacon.”

Ted Roulston - Lesson Lady

My jumper, with whom I did both the junior jumpers and junior hunters, came from Ted Roulston’s. I agree, the western New York area was really big back then into the hunters and jumpers. I guess the economy and the warm sunny shows down south put an end to that era.

As a kid, I always liked the horses Parlor Car and Pillow Talk. Anybody remember them?

This is fun

Was Parlor Car Lucy Chapman’s big dark bay with some white on him? I taught her (and her mother!!) how to post!
Pillow Talk was Jeannie Farrell’s (now LaRue) jumper! I see Jeannie every now and then. She still rides but doesn’t compete. If I remember, Pillow Talk was a wild ride but he could really jump!
I remember going to Ted Roulston’s for a show in the 60’s. It was the first show in our area to have 3 rings going at once! We called it the “3 ring circus!” Now look at Wellington! Ha!

That’s the same Brocklebank!!! I just couldn’t remember who had him. I do remember a very small girl having him after Patty. I thought he was sold but he may have been leased. I remember how we all hoped and prayed we didn’t get switched to him in eq class because he was pretty good at testing a new rider. I just loved that little locamotive.[/QUOTE]

The girl who had him after Patty was Eugenie Cleland. She did him in the eq and jr jumpers. I got my first pony from her when she had moved onto horses.
