So I’ve posted several threads about building my new barn. I’m not going to try and link them here, but they are out there. I’ve debated size, orientation, costs and building styles. After much angst; my conclusion is that 1. I’d prefer to build in stages to spread costs out 2. I’d like as much roof space as possible 3. I need wind ratings / engineered plans 4. I’m not willing to wait 6 months to get a roof up 5. 12 ft sidewalls
I just ordered a carport to use as the roof structure. I was hesitant to go this route initially but after quite a bit of research it turned out to the best option for my situation. I purchased a vertical roof style sized at 30x45x12.
I’m going to set it up inside as a center aisle, though my aisle will be narrow, with three stalls and a bunch of storage bays. Stalls will open to runs of the back.
If I put the aisle dead center of the 30 ft width I could have approximately 10 ft wide stall 10 ft wide aisle 10 ft wide stall cum feed / tack / hay / grooming stall / storage etc. In this scenario I’m thinking I would have 3 stalls sized at approximately 10x15 all down one side. For my personal use, I’m not seeing much reason why a 10x15 stall would be a problem compared to a traditional 12x12 stall. I’d like to hear if you have strong opinions on this though!!!
Alternatively, I could offset the aisle from dead center of the barn and have 12 ft wide stall 10 ft wide aisle 8 ft wide storage. I’m going to be looking at the gable end of the barn from my house and am concerned that the aisle being off center is going to look funny and bug me.
Another option would be an 8 ft wide aisle with 11 ft wide stalls and storage areas. With aisle dead center. Since this is strictly for personal use and I don’t cross tie in aisles, this might be a good option if we think a 10x15 stall is just going to be too tight, especially after kick walls are added the interior width might be closer to 9’6” than 10’. Though I am concerned that an 8ft aisle might restrict what equipment I can drive through the barn.
I’d love to hear y’all’s thoughts and opinions!
