Finger Lake Race Track -- End of the Season -- Many New Homes -- Warmest Thanks
Update on Rock and Roll Roan:

I just found out this morning that the trainer is trying to race him one last time. So, I just have to sit tight for another week and hope he doesn’t get hurt! I’ll have a vet look him over after the race, and if all looks good, he’ll be coming to MD to begin his life as an eventer!

Everyone cross your fingers that this boy doesn’t hurt himself in his final hurrah as a racehorse! I’m so anxious!

Ooooh, he is a looker! I am such a sucker for greys! Best of luck to you guys, and here’s hoping for a nice clean race!

Both my new guys had to run one last time before I got them. Shytown came in 11/12 and Market View came in 4. It was fun watching the replay on the internet; Shytown lead for a while and then just gave up and cantered home. Both were none the worse for wear. I am sure Rock and Roll Roan will be fine!! I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you; he is sure a nice looking horse!

OK, I’ve gotten an email from Louise so I will be holding off on calling the trainer about this guy until I hear from her. I figure I can come up with more than $1.00 for this horse anyway (probably at least $500.00) so we’ll see what happens with Louise’s people.

danceronice - to be honest I’m not planning on a PPE at all. My biggest concern is the horse’s feet as I don’t want to have to keep shoes on this guy. My boys are all barefoot so if need be, I’ll take my farrier over to see what he thinks.

If this horse does come home with me, he will not have to do anything but hang out. I don’t ride anymore and all I really ask for from a horse is that they have good manners.

SO, everyone, let’s just hope that Louise can find him a home first. She’s dam*ed good at doing this.

Right now I’m crossing my fingers for KP. :)
Thats AWSOME MSJ! Congrats to you!!! He is absolutely lovely! I will tell you that last spring i bought an 8 year old off the track who was ocmpletely clean legged. The older they are comming off the track; you will notice the more calm and pleasant to be around. They are the been there done that type and have been around pretty much everything and dont really care to much about anything.

My guy has LOVELY feet but he doesnt have too much heel on him so we left his front shoes on. I’m sure your guy wil be just fine without shoes, they dont really need them on and lit looks like he has really nice feet. Be sure to save his last set of racing plates. i have my guy’s still in my tack box.

When you first get him he might be a little high strung, bouncy, and excited but even through that you will notice that he *(the older ones( tend to know what manners are…surprisingly. Im sure youve experienced that with your other OTTB’s. He will settle down in a day or two and learn that this new life of going out all day and eating is quite wonderful.

Im sure you will be more and more thrilled with Patriot. the older campainers really are wonderful horses who are the “in your pocket” type. He is lovely. be sure to post some photos of him! COngrats to the both of you! You are a blessing!!

Sara, I do hope all goes well. That guy is a gorgeous hunk and I love a grey. I’ve got my fingers, arms, and legs crossed for you.

I believe Rock and Roll Roan is the same trainer that has Karakorum Patriot (same phone #) that might come to my farm. How is he to deal with? Any heads up is appreciated.

Oh and as you’re an eventer, I hope to see you someday come up to NY to Stuart HT in July. I have a lot of eventers as friends.

I actually contacted Karakorum Racing–apparently Patriot was known as “Pete” and was quite successful for them, then was claimed for $50000. Described as taking a while to learn his business but a solid workhorse once he did. The rep really didn’t think he ought to race another year and they really don’t want him going to kill. They gave contact information for a retirement home, if the lady has space, if it doesn’t work out with msj. Oh, and msj, they at least think he ought to have a non-riding home where he can just be a retiree, so your setup sounds great. I did NOT ask for any money, obviously, just background on the horse, and they were very prompt and polite responding.

Crossing my fingers for him…

Wow, great information! That’s fantastic how they could come up with the info, especially how he took some time to ‘learn his job’. I’m hoping his nickname “Pete” followed him. We’ll just have to wait and see how Louise has done with the people she was going to try to have look at KP/Pete. If he comes to my farm, I’ll probably contact them to let them know he’s retired.

BTW - My farm is named Martinsfield. It was named for Martin’s Dream, (aka Bones) my first OTTB from Fingerlakes. The obvious being it was Martin’s Field! I sure couldn’t call the farm Martin’s Dream Farm or Bones Acres, both sounded pretty bad but I decided Martinsfield sounded pretty classy, just like Bones was. Louise has heard a lot about Bones even before we met. I bought the farm so I’d have a place to bury him. He was a broken down bag of bones - a real sympathy buy, that gave me 8 yrs of riding and some jumping and I was glad to be able to give him 8 yrs of retirement. He’s got another buddy ‘planted’ and I imagine that the current 2 I have will be back there as well. Maybe I should have named it Bones Acres after all.

As you can see, Pete wouldn’t be the first sympathy buy - actually the 3rd.

One thing I will say, at least Pete is carrying good weight. I noticed that with all the horses this trainer has listed.

Out of curiousity, was Musketeer ever placed? He’s no longer on the Placed or Available listings…unless I missed it?

He was a beauty!
We were told that Musketeer was sold within the track to another trainer so he will continue racing.

New Finest UP!

Take a LOOK at this fellow…

msj, I think they do have the same trainer. However, I have only dealt with a girl named Missy who I think is a groom/exercise rider. That’s whose number is given in the listings, and she has been very nice and informed. Most of the time she has gotten back to me fairly promptly. I’ve had no contact myself with the trainer yet (its all been through Missy), though maybe I will once it’s time to give him money

OK, at least I’ll know who I’m going to be connected to. Foundationmare also gave me Missy’s number. I’ll wait to see how Louise makes out with some people that she wants to see him and hope they really do take him. If not, I might have to put my 17 yr old OTTB back to work. He also had a 2nd career as an eventer in NJ before I bought him. Then he got to tote a little old lady around over fences and doing some dressage until his allergies to NY got the better of him. Besides, I really can’t have 3 horses just loafing around and I think this guy, KP, definitely needs retirement.

Again, good luck with Rock and Roll Roan.

Ok, that cute appy pony, Ernie Applesauce, is now being offered for $750…someone really needs to take him home for Christmas!

I saw that and he is the cutest! He went through the sale for ~$900 but didn’t meet his reserve.

I think I’ll email my neighbor as she was looking for a lead line pony for her sister. Maybe she might like Ernie as well.

If Pete gets a home, I think we should focus on Me Me Anna…another older campaigner who deserves a forever home…

Who’s in?!?

If donations aren’t needed to help KP, then I’m in on Me Me Anna…

Keep fingers and toes crossed. I’m escorting a very nice woman around the backside this morning. KP isn’t on her list, but I’m sure going to point him out to her.

ooooh I really like The Rock Can Roll. $300 are you kidding me? If he doesn’t go fast, my head is going to spin…

I really do hope she will like him and take him. Please see if you can find out what they want for him? That’s super important!

But if she doesn’t then you and I need to take trip back there to see him after I call Missy. PS. I promise to be on my best behavior.

I’ve got my list of things/questions that are important to me and they are:

 1. How long have you had him?

 2. Diet - hay type and grain and any supplements

 3. Feet - what does farrier say - potentially barefoot

 4. Vaccinations - what and current Coggin’s

 5. Worming protocol - when last wormed

 6. Cross tie and/or single tie?

 7. Actual height and approximate weight

 8. Blanket size

 9. Turnout - with others??

 10. Manners, Manners, Manners!!!

 11. Any medical problems -i.e., allergies either respiratory or dermal, etc.

Now if anyone can come up with other things to consider please let me know and I’ll add them to the list. I haven’t looked at a horse to buy for 10 yrs so I’m kinda at a loss. Soundness is not a concern as he will be a pasture ornament only. I have no intention of riding him.

I agree she needs a home but I don’t do mares at all - especially with 2 and probably a 3rd gelding.

But she posted as FREE to a good home so there must be someone out there wanting a lovely mare and she is lovely.

All I CAN do are mares…with two spazzy geldings at home, mares are all we can have, as the two boys are fine with each other, but do not do well with other geldings(i’ve tried), and anyways, mares are the best!!!

Regardless of the sex of the horses, they all deserve a chance at a good home. I have posted on my local horse forum that I will haul a horse or two, home to Ottawa, from FL, for less than the cost of gas…I hope someone takes me up on my offer…
