Finger Lakes Finest 2013

Its getting to be that time of year again.

I realize starting this year’s thread in March is a little early, but we are going to be at the WNY Horse Expo and BC’s mare, Darkness Falls, will be featured as well.

So for the WNY area FLF owners/admirers - stop in and say “hi”.

Otherwise, we will be posting updates as we get them here. I am not certain what day “kick off” is.

Also, and I realize it is late notice, if anyone wants to email an updated or new photo for this years slide show of FLF “graduates”, please send it to

fingerlakesfinest@gmail.com

Thanks, RwO, for starting the Finger Lakes Finest TBs 2013 thread! The track stable area is now open, and barns are moving in by the day. The racing season starts April 20, and soon after opening day there should start being great new horses listed and looking for new careers in good new homes.

Please come one and come all to WNY Equifest this Sunday March 17, to cheer on Darkness Falls (Tilly) as she represents Thoroughbreds in the parade of breeds at Noon, and then shows off in the dressage demonstration at 1:30. She will surely show WNY how beautiful and athletic Finger Lakes Finests OTTBs are – and serve as an ambassador to interest others in coming with us this racing season to find their own forever Finest.
Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds will be at Equifest with a booth and flyers and photos of Finests in their new careers. We hope to see many of the fans of Finests!

Remember Jane Rain, Essex Ferry and Nurse Kiki?

Here they are with a bunch of other nice looking fillies and mares.

One of those gals is the spitting image of our Lexi (Silent Reflection) the second from last photo on the link. First time ever that I see a horse that looks so much like one of ours, and low and behold, same sire. Our Lexi is an absolute doll, and if this mare is anything like ours, I’d snap her up if I was looking for another. Lovely athletic looking mare, with Fappiano in there too, she’s super cute!

Thanks for posting this commandercody. I just saw it on facebook and was about to do the same…

Can’t wait to start seeing some 2013 listings!!

The prices on the remaining OTTB mares from the Utica, NY area craigslist ad have been substantially reduced ($250 OBO). Nurse Kiki (Finger Lakes) - by Tomorrows Cat earned over $92,000. Trippadeedooda - attractive winner on the turf. Essex Ferry (Finger Lakes) - Lord Avie and other attractive bloodlines. I’m Your Gal - pretty chestnut by Bowman’s Band…
If the timing was right (which it isn’t) I’d consider one;

After the second trip to the track, we have some new horses to view. There are also some updates on horses that remain on the list from last season.

We had a gray, but he already has his new home. I left his posting on the available page to let people drool. There is a really cute bay mare that is eye catching but really looks like she should be stuffed full of carrots and spoiled.
The bay gelding is not hard on the eyes either. Volunteers will be heading back to the track this Saturday as well. If you see something that catches your eye, don’t wait around.

Six new listings – some seriously nice horses!

Bumping up this thread for the 2013 Finger Lakes Finest Thoroughbreds trainer listings! We were at the track over the Memorial Day weekend, and we have just posted six stunning new horses on our website and Facebook page. There’s something for everyone in this new group: big and flashy bay with clean legs and chrome, only one start and nice clean legs; pretty gray mare who is lightly raced; elegant young bay gelding, clean legged and lightly raced with a classic TB look and very nice movement; adorable and sweet smaller bay girl with chrome; a young big chestnut gelding who is a gorgeous floaty mover, also lightly raced and clean legged; a very pretty and athletic dark bay filly with great sport or show potential for an experienced OTTB retrainer, at a great bargain price. So many friendly, snuggling mint lovers in this group, too!
As our volunteer who maintains our website said when she saw the photos, if someone doesn’t find something they like in this new group, they simply don’t know what to look for.
There is already some serious interest in some of these newly listed horses, and given their quality, several are not likely to last long. So don’t hesitate to call if one catches your eye!

So I know that sometimes my brain keeps trying to make the name of the horse something other than what it is. I don’t know if anyone else is a MASH 4077 fan, but I keep trying to make Tree Topper Chuck into Spear Chuck-er Jones. Regardless, he is drool worthy and so my type. However, the Vista mare is also lovely. I like horses that are easy to bath and don’t require a lot of Quick Silver shampoo. As previously noted, there has been a lot of quick interest lately and fortune rewards the bold. Will post some more photos/head shots tonight.

As usual, FLF are indeed drool worthy. For those looking for a project, I brought one back a couple of years ago for a local woman, and that gelding sold last year for 12k! Two years of time, a grand as an initial investment, and look at the return! Snap up your favourite as soon as possible, because if not, someone else will beat you to it!

Miss Tiny Rolecks is currently the favorite for the fifth race at FL today (at 5/2 right now), and the #3 free handicapping pick from TVG with the best speed figure in the race.

(And I do begin to see why some trainers don’t want to list the horse by real name because I’m looking at the program versus what her sale ad says and am not inspired to bet, even just to use her in an exotic, as a 68 speed figure is the highest in the race but the TRAINER says no a racehorse. Although if I were going to bet that race I might go ahead and believe the handicappers.)

Ran well for second despite her jockey weaving in and out of traffic and spending lots of time out in the middle of the track at the start.

You snooze, you lose. Hook and Lateral was online for about 24 hours before he was tucked into his new home.

There are a few that need to find a new residence pronto, so if you have been thinking about a new Finest, get yourself in gear.

Maspeth Princess has the most beautiful, soulful eyes. Los Caobos is pretty nice looking, and since grays goes quickly - check out Check the Cites. Another one, H2 Oh is going to go up in short order and he has a pre-track resume as well.

As R w/O says, several Finests have quickly been placed, so if you see one that interests you, call without delay!
Maspeth Princess has found a new home, thanks to the networking efforts of FLF and many others. The adorable Takemetothe Rodeo also quickly found her new home. But her stablemate Miss Tiny Rolecks raced very well in her recent start,so she will race some more before being ready to go to a new home.
The gallant If and Almost has also found a new calling – we wish him well.
Thank you to all who follow the Finests and step up to give them a new lease on life.

I’m disappointed Suzanne is no longer doing listings on the proboards site… I preferred that format.

Regardless, you can’t go wrong with a Finger Lakes Thoroughbred! Even if my jerk of an FLF is lame at the moment…

ETA: If anyone is interested in Maspeth Princess or any other horses from Joe Marino, I had a very good experience with him and wouldn’t hesitate to get another horse from him :).

Disappointed here too – Suzanne’s knowledge of horses is exceptional!!

Regardless of format, three new horses are up. Two bays and a chestnut - take a look!

Just did a lesson for last year’s Ride Now and cannot say enough for the war horses. I’m pretty sure you could assign that mare a book to read on horse training and have it work. That mare (with an dinged up knee by the way) could not be any more sensible and good for her new to the horse world owner.

Happy shopping!

Finger Lakes Finests is WAY bigger than any one person, and we continue to grow and thrive and place hundreds of horses each year even as some former volunteers move on to other things, as many other former volunteers have done over the 8 or so years that various people have been doing their little bit to help the horses at Finger Lakes find new homes. And we have gained some wonderful new volunteers who join the ongoing group with its excellent horse knowledge… and who have already discovered the addictive lure of Finests! (two of our new volunteers have already added Finests to their lives.)

The horse knowledge of our current group includes people who specialize in H/J, in dressage, in eventing, in pleasure riding, in pedigrees for racing and for sport, and in the racetrack world itself. As one person with good horse knowledge moves on to other endeavors, we add other people with excellent horse knowledge. And we are so gratified by the hundreds of people – literally – who tell us over and over again how much they love the website and how much easier it is to browse the available horses than pro-boards ever was. The positive response from the trainers and assistants and grooms at the track has been especially overwhelming and heartwarming.

Now let’s focus on the wonderful horses listed who all need loving new homes. All the horses care about is whether we have mints to give them when we take their photos and whether a good caring person will step up to give them a good new life of love and attention and lots of good food!

I really like the look of Quatorze’s Girl.
