First new post & Last post not functioning correctly

When I click on the “first new post” or “last post” it takes me to top of the page I need to be on, but does not go down to the actual post. It just stays on the top. Usually the page would scroll itself down to align with either the first new post or last post (whichever one I selected). Not a huge deal, but a bit of a pain to read through everything again to figure out where I left off - mainly on the bigger threads.

Thanks for reporting the issue.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem?

Oh yes, definitely have same thing happen. I didn’t think it worked since the big update some time ago. At least, not that I have noticed.

No problem for me on Firefox, Win 10, or Chrome, on Android.

No problem here either, not of any kind.

@rockonxox @horsepoor oo

What type of device/computer are you using to access the site? What Internet browser and version?

Have you tried clearing the site’s cookies?

Thanks!

Me too, ever since the ‘upgrade’!

I noticed about six months ago if a thread was multiple page and if I selected “go to last post” the system would take me to the last page somewhere but not the last post

But if the thread is one page, selecting “go to last post” will take you to the last post

Using Chrome operating system

Working for me as I expect… first unread takes me to the first unread, last post takes me to the last post. I will confess a few times last post takes me to the top of the last page but very rarely.

MacOS, Sierra + Safari.

I’m on Mac using Chrome.

I’m using Chrome on a desktop. This issue only started within the past two weeks for me.

Today: Using Chrome the “first new post” seems to work fine. “Last Post” stalls at the top of the page.

I also tried today in IE and everything functions there just fine. Technology is so fickle

—ETA— when I open as a new tab in chrome “first new post” does not function properly

I pulled out Chrome and both of them work as expected for me.

Any chance an add-on is behaving badly, rockon?

No. There are no add ons. When I go to click on a notification it only brings me to the top of the page a post should be on and does not travel down to the post I made that someone liked or to their post that quotes me.

It is hit and miss whether the site wants to function properly or not. This isn’t the biggest deal compared to other bugs, just annoying.

Hmmm. I use Ad Blocker Plus for Chrome. I wonder if the behavior you’re seeing could be due to the page getting “hung up” on an ad, and that’s why it’s transient in nature? Maybe a trial with an ad blocker would help rule out/rule in a ad problem?

Oh, wait–before you said it was the first new post and last post buttons. Now you’re saying it’s when you click on a notification. Is it all of those things? Are you still having problems with the first new post and last post buttons?

Well, the notification thing is one I just noticed. May have been all of them originally but I haven’t had a notification in a while so just found that out  I am still having issues with the last post and first new post.

I’ve never had the issues with ads that everyone else seems to have - they have never been wonky or caused a problem before (they are just ugly). I can’t try an ad blocker as my work does not allow me to install extra things on their computers. I honestly don’t feel like the ads would be the root of this issue. It seems more like the placeholder/anchor isn’t synched up correctly.

I’ve also just noticed that when I go to someones profile and click the “go to post” link the URL changes itself. @Simkie I’m just going to use one of yours as an example (currently the first entry on activities). The link is https://www.chronofhorse.com/forum/forum/discussion-forums/horse-care/10031410-horse-freaks-out-when-i-try-to-give-him-dormosedan-gel?p=10031543#post10031543 and when I click on that it removes the anchor (#post10031543) and just keeps me at the top of the page instead of bringing me to the specific post.

FWIW, the dropping anchor is normal behavior–the scroll still happens as the page loads. When I click that link, the browser looks for the page (thinking, thinking) but when the page paints, the post number drops as the page scrolls down.

Any chance that the security settings on Chrome as deployed by work are limiting the scroll down? I don’t know what is causing the page to scroll, but if it’s a redirect or something, and the security settings are limiting that, it might cause what you’re seeing.

Do you have the same issue on a non work computer in Chrome? That would help suss out if it is computer specific or user specific. I’ll go mess around and see if I can get the same behavior playing with the security settings.

Alright, interesting: if I block javascript, the “new post” button doesn’t work at ALL, and the “last post” button goes directly to the new post, with no scrolling down.

I dunno where the problem is, but it seems reasonable to check into javascript on both sides (COTH and user.)

This is a recent issue and I don’t believe anything new has happened with the security settings at work. I’ve not had issues with any other websites. I’m not going to go ask IT though

My non work computer hates COTH and has issues of loading the front (main) coth page whenever I open a topic. I have a post on here about that somewhere. I gave up on that and just don’t check coth at home anymore.

Is there something that I can do on my end to unblock the java and see if that would work? I’m not sure where I’d go to see if that is a setting I’ve got on here right now.

Basic javascript on/off and whitelist/blacklist settings are:

Settings>Advanced>Content Setting>JavaScript

But companies frequently have enterprise-wide settings that you can’t view or change.

It says Java is allowed for me.
