First time doing a design clipping? Other cool ideas?

I’ve never clipped my horses, but now I want to just so that I can do this!

We typically only do minimal work during the winter and keep our horses outside during the day (in at night because of the cold) and only blanket when absolutely necessary. So we usually have a couple wooly mammoths in the pasture come January

I don’t even know what I would do for my gelding though… there really isn’t anything that could be done with either his registered name or barn nick names.

You all have some really cool designs though!

Y’all are AMAZING with all those designs.

I’m inspired.

Fast fast quick fast mare is going to get lightning bolts on her shoulder (hair left) or on her rear (hair shaved). As is, we’re going to start with a steeplechase cut and see where that leaves us.

The Cornell Polo String (20+ horses) gets fancy, individual design clips yearly!

There was some polo mag. that showed a whole bunch of the pony’s butt designs last year - the artist that does them is SO creative and skilled - if I find the copy I’ll scan and post…

I did find a link to just a couple of the designs though - the two links are versions of the same webpage I think, but they feature differen’t pony butt’s so check them both  Scroll a bit down to see designs…

If I skip the whole registered name “Mamalicious” - which I didn’t make up and don’t use anyway… anyone have any suggestions for Alkippe? Alkippe was the greek warrior princess, another definition is “mighty mare”. She is a TB, not heavy built, more “elegant” in stature.

Any ideas? Will be body clipping this weekend. You guys have inspired me to give it a go!

OTTB FTW:

You could do a laurel wreath: the symbol of the greek gods.

For the Warrior part you could do a cool graphic bow and arrow.

For Pony Club games nationals years ago I did a heart with a lightning bolt through it once, a heart another time, and we tried to get every pony something that suited. The best was the white pony with black skin. The heart with the lightning bolt really stood out! Wish I had some pictures of that.

These slenderizing, I mean racing stripes were on my horse very briefly.

OOOO Vicarious Rider!!
Love those ideas! Thanks!!

I am by no means a pro clipper, but even I can manage a basic design. I leave a big patch on both butt cheeks when I body clip, then I use white chalk to draw a design. I then use the big clippers to do all around it and the little face clippers to get in and do the detail. I leave both sides hairy until I like it in case I screw up up first side too bad! I used to do a heart, but I got a little more ambitious this year and did a sweet wineglass on my pony for the AEC’s (she was fuzzy enough) Her name is Madeira (a wine) Might be a little unprofessional but I figure thats a perk of bouncing around on a pony! I wish I had a good picture…

So this motivated me and I just did a moon and star on one side of my mares rump, and a moon on the other side. left room for a rocketship going over it, but haven’t decided exactly how I want to do that part. Her name is Cosmic Messenger. Although I shoulda practiced on some shetlands first because my artsy clipping skills were a lil dull…

What type of clippers…

…do you use to get an intricate design?
Typical face ones or even smaller ones like you see for mens beards?

I use my A5s, but definitely smaller is better–just be aware that the smaller ones sometimes give you a closer “shave” so you may want to do it 10 days before you really need it to look pretty–initially you end up with lines. I use the A5s to do the face and all the edge bits because I have (more) trouble keeping things straight with the Clipmasters, and you can definitely see the difference at first. I draw a stencil on cardboard and then tape it with duct tape–my horse just loves having that pulled off.

For those of you who have a horse named after a car. Check out my Bentley !

You guys have great clipping skills! I’ll share mine, although not as nice or fancy

Barn name: Rogue
Hair ‘Tattoo’: X-men logo

My friend and I both full-clipped our mares, and put one half of a heart on each left upper hindquarter!

Has anyone done a grouping of stars? The horse’s name is Wizard so stars seem appropriate, but I’d love to do a few on each side. Planning to clip into an unclipped hindquarter, so less room for detail, I think. Will post photos if it gets done

Just thoght of the best one ever… A FLYING MONKEY (Wizard of Oz reference). Now if only I could find someone in NJ who could do it…

Very cool! Kinda looks like a zebra, I think I am going to try this one. I am wintering my horse at a dressage barn with an indoor, I wonder what they will think?

Clipper-Scape

I watched a fabulous clipping demo by Dana Boyd Miller, she is sponsored by Andis Clippers. She clips whole landscapes into the horse. It’s pretty amazing!
