Flynn Sport Horses/Matt Flynn

I am writing this post in the hopes that by making my experience public that someone else won’t have to endure the same profoundly unprofessional experience I did working for Matt Flynn/Flynn Sport Horses. As I was recently employed by him.

Mr. Flynn is borderline unbearable to work for in to many ways to adequately articulate but a general description would be condesending, rude, dismissive, extremely short tempered, and erratic. Hence his continually posting in Yard and Groom, as well as, other sites including his own Facebook page for an available Grooms position. His turnover rate speaks for itself as he has posted the same job opening 3x since December. I as well as, others before me quickly found out why this was when working for him. I stayed a very short time as does anyone who has had the bad fortune of working for him. After 7 days I quit, his ignorant and arrogant behaviour was intolerable. The afternoon I walked out and told him enough was enough Mr. Flynn owed me $583.00 for 7 days of work. I never bothered asking for a check. My salary was $500 for 6 days per our agreement upon our 1st meeting so 7 days would total $583.00. Never ever did I think that he wouldn’t send me my check. I texted him.minutes after leaving with my address I never even for a second entertained the thought of not being paid. I sent him 1 text and one email in a span of 2 weeks after quiting asking him when my check would be mailed. He lives 5 miles from me . I was professional and polite in context and tone of the texts and email sent to him and would be more than happy to provide anyone interested in seeing them. All communication went ignored. I sent a 3rd text the following week making him aware that if I didn’t receive a check by the following Monday I would have no choice but to take the matter into a small claims court setting and invited him to clear this matter up as to avoid this being adjudicated in small claims. Again was extremely polite and professional. I don’t consider putting someone on notice your going to be left with no option than suing them threatening them. Its making them aware of your intentions nothing more nothing less.

In the last week my brother, and my boyfriend contacted Mr.Flynn via phone. He has stated verbatim to both " she quit I am not paying her". They where also extremely polite and professional in there conversations with Mr. Flynn. Mr. Flynn took both there calls and spoke at length about his reasoning. They where stunned by his ego, arrogance, and being entirely devoid of ethics. Mr. Flynn made both men aware he was going to attempt to get a restraining order against me. So clearly he would be willing to waste the courts time with such lunacy and thinks a RO is designed to stop someone from trying to retrieve the pay you owe them? Aapparently some victim of domestic violence is as important as this payroll disbute in his logic. Nobody that contacted Mr. Flynn on my behalf or myself has threatened him physically, verbally, or in any way, shape, or form. Threatening a RO was laughable given these circumstances and quite honestly an insult to a victim of violence who desperately needs one. When learning of his reason for not paying me, was because I simply quit I did make him aware via text that I would in no way tolerate such behaviour and would make the industry as a whole aware of his unwillingness to pay me and his reason why. In addition to Mr. Flynn refusing to pay me what was owed he made my brother and boyfriend aware in there conversations he never agreed to $500 for a 6 day week. That statement blew me away more so than the fact he wouldn’t pay me because I quit. So its blatantly obvious his character and moral compass is not only what I’ve described above but he is a bold face liar as well. So after hearing he accused me of lying about our agreed salary I did the math for being at his farm from 7am -4/5 pm for 6 days or $83.00 a day @ $500 a week. That totals $8.00 an hour don’t u think if I was trying to bolster or embellish our agreed upon salary I wouldn’t do myself better than $8.00 an hour LOL. Calling me a liar left me with my jaw on the floor. I am in no way trying to sound of any particular importance but given my resume and who I’ve worked for in the past MORE than once for 2 previous employers. I would have in NO way gotten out of bed for less than$500 a week EVER. My 2 previous employers have paid me $600 for 6 days. The references from previous employers far more famous in 3 Day Eventing and Show Jumping than Mr. Flynn. They will and have bolstered to Mr. Flynn my knowledge, experience, and ability as a professional show groom. So his claims that $500 a week wasn’t our agreement is again laughable.

In closing, I am now left with having to persue Mr.Flynn in a small claims court setting. I have subsequently been made aware I am not the 1st employee or the 2nd for that matter Mr. Flynn has done this to. Making the job environment in his barn unbearable, person quits, Mr. Flynn REFUSES to pay employee. This is his M.O. and his continued way to get free labor if only for a short time. Doing what he did to me is one thing but finding out this isn’t the first or even second time he’s done this is inconceivable. I thought it prudent to make the public aware of who and what Mr. Flynn is in his entirety. The unmitigated gaul of Mr.Flynn is mind numbing. I am more than willing to post the one email and texts I sent Mr. Flynn requesting my paycheck over the past 4 weeks. Yesterday upon my making his sponsors aware of this situation Mr. Flynn called my boyfriend (also have phone records to prove what I’m saying is true) and asked him to stop me from putting this situation on social media. Mr. Flynn was told my pay as well as an apology needs to be forthcoming. I’m sure he’.s well aware his past of screwing over hard working people won’t look good in the light of day. Mr.Flynn has had 4 weeks to pay me, chose not to because I quit, and then proceeded to call me a liar about our salary agreement on top of having a history of this with others. I certainly hope this post can and will prevent someone else from avoiding Mr.Flynns unscupulous business practices. If nothing else I hope this will put other.potential employees on notice of what Flynn Sport Horses is all about.

Not the first time I’ve heard a story like that about him.

Instead of small claims consider filing with the Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour division. https://www.dol.gov/whd/contact_us.htm

They deal with this kind of complaint all the time, and it is free. Plus, he might get fined on top of what he owes you…

Even better if you can get the others to report their issues with you.

By the way, it may be a good idea to delete your post until you speak with an attorney at W&H.

I would caution you about posting details prior to taking him to small claims.

So sorry to hear this, and best of luck!

I’m in no way concerned about the ramifications of this post. It is in no way defamatory, slanderous, or libelous because my entire post in the exact truth. Therefore, making any thing stated above non actionable. I have factual documentation to back up everything I’ve said. Matt Flynn doesn’t intimidate me as he may have other former employees and there are MOST DEFINITELY others and that also be factually proven. It is my sincere hope that this will prevent this from happening to others. He also has not paid any taxes on former employees according to the US dept of Labor and Hours . I also can be factual documented as well.

I experienced an almost identical situation working for Matt Flynn. He was arrogant, ill-tempered, unkind to his horses and intolerable. I to was not paid for several days of work. His turn over rate for employees is incredibly high and his ethics have proven to be non-existent. Well… It’s just illegal to not pay employees for work. So at some point this will all catch up to him.

I would recommend using the federal Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division to make your claim against Mr. Flynn. As previously noted, it’s free and it will bring down his Modus Operanda for others who come to him in employment situations.

If others will provide evidence that he does this often, he will be in very hot water.

I cannot convey my appreciation to his other former employees that have come on here and also shared identical experiences with Matt. As well as, the 3 people who contacted me privately earlier today. Before posting this yesterday I knew of 2 people before me he had done this to. As of now the total is 8 including myself. I honestly didn’t think before last night I could be more disgusted by Matt Flynn for what he did to me and the 2 others before me that I knew of. Now with 5 more people coming forward since this post last night. Morally and ethically bankrupt now sadly doesn’t seem to describe him on his best day. On Sunday I posted a similar statement on his sponsor Forrest Solliers Facebook page. They had the audacity in the comment section to ask me to to keep the conversation private. That floored me. I understand they have a product to protect but asking me to not alert the public of how he operates and “save there ass” is regards to humility is equally as egregious as what Matt has done. Perhaps they should do or will do in the future slightly better and more thorough due diligence when deciding to support a rider who’s name and reputation is attached. After there response to what I posted its is not lost on me why they have a cohesive partnership " birds of a feather" is the old adage. That coupled with the fact his close friend James is one of the reps for this particular sponsor and was at his farm twice while I was employed with Matt. Matt and he where on the phone several times DAILY as well. So they are extremely close friends. [Edit]

A company is perfectly within their rights to ask you not to post drama publicly on their page, and I do not agree that their request is equally as egregious as what Flynn has done. Seeing as it is not regarding themselves specifically or their product, contacting a sponsor should have been done privately. You are one person, for all they know you could be a psycho ex girlfriend spreading lies about him. They have no obligation to just take your word for it and drop him without doing any of their own research. They should be permitted the time to do their own research and come to a conclusion before being lumped as “birds of a feather.” Continuing a discussion with others on their page is both rude and inappropriate.

By all means, blast him on your own social media pages, if you must. This is filthy and foul and the industry should know about it, especially other potential workers.
Did you have a contract in writing with your pay?
If not, is it in writing anywhere - text or emails?
It definitely sounds like W&H is a much better step at this point than small claims.

Where is he located?

I was right there with you until you started putting the personal business of a person unrelated to your employment situation on this thread.

For what it’s worth, I have no skin in this game, other than to say I have known Matt Flynn for some years, and have several friends and acquaintances who purchased very nice horses from him. In my experience, he is both ethical and professional. I would not discourage anyone from doing business with him.

I have heard that he has very exacting standards regarding the care of his horses and high expectations of his workers. He also has a dry, quirky sense of humor. Perhaps these standards plus his manner are not everyone’s cup of tea, but it does not make him “ignorant.” He is also not abusive of his horses.

I especially want to point out that it is unkind and tacky to bring up the sponsor’s rep–by name-- in a public post. [Edit]

Finally, it is customary–and ethical, to give notice when you leave a position–even an unpleasant one. Especially when there are animals involved who can’t care for themselves. From your post, it seems as if you left in a huff without warning. This is not professional behavior–even if you found Matt to be rude and difficult to work for, two wrongs don’t make a right.

I going to assume you are young, so here is some unsolicited but well intentioned advice from an old lady: by all means, pursue money that is owed you. And don’t stay in a job that is not a good fit. But be dignified about how you conduct yourself. Behaving appropriately and with class is how to get ahead in a small, tight knit industry. Offer a week’s notice when you leave a job. Chances are your boss won’t take you up on it, but at least you took the high road. If he or she does take you up on it, do your absolute best work until the minute you finish. That way they miss you when you’re gone, and you can look at yourself in the mirror and know you did what was right. Handle disputes privately, and never shame people publicly–especially innocent parties.

There is truth in the old adage: Be good to people on your way up as you may need them on your way down.

Wishing you the best going forward!

I’ve know Matt since he was a kid and he was always pleasant and kind. I’ve enjoyed watching him rise up in the ranks and start a business. It is disappointing to read this thread.

I agree with the other posters who suggested that when you have a payroll situation the best course of action is with the Dept of Labor. These types of situations show that it’s a good idea to make sure you have some type of employment contract that spells out your hire/start date, wages, working hours/days and time off. This sort of documentation would help you in an sort of wage/contract dispute.

About Flynn Sport Horses/Matt Flynn. Let me correct you on some FACTS mmeqcenter because CLEALRY you are brazen enough to make a very MISINFORMED statement. The particular sponsor I referenced is WELL AWARE of his past of not paying people WELL AWARE they have been for a period of time LONG before I ever came along. I didn’t want to have to make publicly known but now you have made me have to defend myself against what you THOUGHT was the situation. Secondly, there knowledge of others obliterates your theory of a “crazy ex girlfriend” ridiculousness. Lets just say for the sake of your theory the sponsor in question had no knowledge previous of Mr. Flynn [edit] as of this minute 10 ya I typed that right 10 people have contacted me SINCE LUNCH and one who requested anonymity which I will absolutely respect but had an hour long conversation on the phone and was kind enough to furnish me with an EXTREMELY damaging conversion with Mr. Flynn. They would certainly know now.Its a very soul rattling listen of what Matt Flynn thinks of all the employees he’s screwed in the past. So please “stay in your lane” about the FACTS in this situation. Because that’s EXACTLY what I have done. Trust and believe that there is a [edit] ton of more info that I’ve learned today all FACTS [edit]. Matt knows it or he wouldn’t havr reached out to me twice today my boyfriend 3 times offering to pay me in full today. He has alsocontacted a mutual friend that shall remain nameless but Matt knows EXACTLY who he is to do his bidding. If for a nanosecond u think I find any enjoyment in putting someone on blast I assure u I don’t. However Mr. Flynn shouldn’t have gambled with someone who had NOTHING to loose when he has EVERYTHING to loose especially knowing that there where enough people he screwed to constitute a football team. Take a seat lady !!

I did make him aware via text that I would in no way tolerate such behaviour and would make the industry as a whole aware of his unwillingness to pay me and his reason why

this is extortion, Tread lightly OP, this kind of thing can end up biting you instead of helping. Seek the aid of Florida’s Wage and Labor Dept. to help you. Franklu seeing the OP’s response to one poster here, may damage their future employability - that kind of rant signifies potential drama some would not want to risk. Sorry OP. I do get your anger and sympathize but there are more professional ways to go about it. You could find that Mr. Flynn may not be the only defendant in a court case.

Trinkamally…the rep’s business wasn’t disclosed exactly the opposite if u read the post…I said I would not now or ever disclosethe details of what Matt made me privy to. The situation and conversation I was referencing is common knowledge and believe me is NO secret. Certainly not when an Olympic team rider (who shall remain nameless) yelled very loudly across the warm up in front of EVERYONE at Red Hills about the situation. So believe me it wasn’t like I held the nuclear codes quite the opposite. The point was I was a stranger not a fellow colleague that ribbed him about it. ALSO and more importantly Matt should of not discussed the situation to me directly and to numerous other people via the phone repeatedly over the course of a morning. For 2 reasons one…he had no regard for someone else’s personal business being overheard by a stranger and two…because the situation had a sexual content and Mr. Flynn couldn’t have cared less he was speaking on the phone in front of a new hire that knew NONE of the people involved and wasn’t a colleague that would “rib” him. I was a new hire AN EMOLOYEE of Mr.Flynns that behaviour I hope I wouldn’t need to explain the levels of innapprooriatness for that. So while your handing out “taking the high ground” and doing the “right thing” please save your moral high ground for Mr. Flynn he clearly needs the spot you’ll save him. 10 people as of now have came forward I assure u Mr. Flynn wasn’t an isolated in my incident of dispicablness. Being a dispicible person is THE FIBER ON WHICH HE IS BUILT.
