Foal patrol

Alpine sky and foal are back from the hospital!

Alpine Sky and her colt are back at Old Tavern Farm. The farm staff put together this video updating everyone on the colt’s progress and homecoming. They had a great day back enjoying their paddock and the sunshine above Saratoga Lake. The farm staff would like to thank all the staff at Rood & Riddle Saratoga for their excellent care of mom and baby throughout the past week.

We are working on the camera schedule for the next few days and it may be limited for the time being. Please be patient as mom and baby adjust and the team focuses on their health. If there are any questions, please reach out to Foal Patrol at nmrpgasst@racingmuseum.net

Thank you for your kind messages and continued support of Foal Patrol.

She acts like a mare that likes her turnout.

Sadly, Alpine Sky’s 2020 More Than Ready colt has died. :frowning:

Omg. He was such a spunky guy. I never imagined that
this year has been heartbreaking.

He was a little guy. With his complications early on, I can’t say I’m shocked.
My heart bleeds for that mare, she was a tiger mom.

2020 really hasn’t been a good foaling year and unfortunately Foal Patrol illustrated that the reality of breeding horses is much harder than it might appear to someone unfamiliar with it.

Sadly, true words.
In the first season, one mare died (out of eight mares highlighted). All foals survived (as far as I know.).
Second season, all eight foals and mares were OK (as far as I know).
This, third season, I think two foals out of six died, mares OK. I see that Ashado20 is having leg problems, and I hope she is OK.
Yes, a tough season. Certainly educational to me (in a tough way), a long-time rider, but not a breeder.

I knew how it could be wrong, didn’t know it happened this often.
I hope this year’s tragedy’s doesn’t put them off of doing a season 4. Even with the heartache moments I’d like to see it return.

Breeding is not for the faint of hear

La Verdad, who was on Foal Patrol a couple of years ago, has died. She foaled an Into Mischief colt on May 4th and later colicked and couldn’t be saved.

So sad to read this. I know mares post-foaling can be susceptible to colic with the large “vacancy” in their abdomen. So frustrating that sometimes with the best medical care, they still can’t be saved.

Dang. The hits keep on coming this year

TDN put together a nice tribute to La Verdad. Scroll down to “Featured Video”.
You might cry though, fair warning. https://www.thoroughbreddailynews.com/

She wasn’t on Foal Patrol, but Zenyatta delivered a chestnut filly by Candy Ride this morning.

Nice!

The chestnut color of the foal surprised me considering the coat colors of Candy Ride and Zenyatta, but they both have chestnuts in their pedigrees and apparently each have the gene.

Both of Zenyatta’s parents carried the chestnut gene which meant that there was a 25% chance she would be chestnut, 50% chance she would not be chestnut but carry the gene, and 25% that she would be bay/brown and not carry it.

And of course, Candy Ride has produced many chestnuts himself. So again, with both parents of this filly being bay/brown (but carrying the chestnut gene) there was a 25% chance that she would be chestnut.

Yes,. I looked at the pedigrees when I saw the chestnut baby. I don’t remember the coat color of Zenyatta’s previous foals. Has she produced a chestnut foal before this one?

Ziconic, her 2013 colt by Tapit is chestnut.
