Nice photos of Frankel colt chasing a pheasant from Juddmonte;https://twitter.com/JuddmonteFarms/s…358976/photo/1
Cute pictures!
Foal Patrol had a tough year this year. I hope they bring it back next year in spite of that.
I wondered where the pheasant was and then realized I had to click on the photo to see the whole picture.
Yes, it wasn’t a great year at all for foal patrol. How are your babies doing @LaurieB ?
So far, so good. Thanks for asking, @skydy!

Lovely!
No, he’s by The Factor. Good guess though because he certainly does resemble our Astern filly from last year–they are half siblings.
Here she is, at that age)

That’s really cool. I always thought that The Factor was a very interesting horse- in spite of his interesting owner/breeder.
What about him made you want to breed to him? How did you decide on this cross?
@LaurieB I know a bit ‘off topic’, how are your 2019 Astern and RunHappy girls doing? Either here or FB…
I’ve always liked what The Factor produces. The first time I went to breed to him, it turned out he was spending the year in Japan. So as soon as he came back I was ready. The mare had previously produced a filly we love by Hard Spun (by Danzig) and of course The Factor is from the same sire line (War Front/Danzig). Plus, although the mare isn’t huge herself she tends to produce big offspring, so I hoped that The Factor would moderate that somewhat. The mare is by Street Cry and though she won at shorter distances, SC mares often produce offspring that want at least a mile. So I also liked the idea of adding some of The Factor’s blazing speed to her pedigree.
As it turned out, we got lucky and the cross appears (so far, LOL) to have given us just what we wanted.

What don’t you like about the horse’s owner and breeder?
The yearlings are doing great. They’re just hanging out in a 20 acre field with half a dozen of their filly friends. I got new pics of them a couple of weeks ago.

@LaurieB Thanks for the photos!
How fast they grow up from cute, wobbly foals to grown up (almost) looking horses.
Funny, I loved Race when I first saw her but will have to admit I’m liking how Zing has matured! What’s your take on how they’ve grown up?
As I have no clue, at what age will they be sent off for the next phase of their life (being ridden etc)?
Maybe I’ve got the wrong guy- but wasn’t he a Dr. of some kind and he ran around touting the horse like he was the second coming of Spectacular Bid? (grey ) If so, I just thought he was a little over the top.
The two fillies couldn’t be more different. That was true when they were babies and it’s still true now. Race is more “mature” but Zing is catching up, and she’s currently taller. They both have things I really like about them, and other things I wouldn’t mind changing (as is always true.) They both love to run–which is a great trait to have and also very entertaining to watch. We will definitely be racing Race. We may offer Zing in one of the fall yearling sales.

Interested… I know last year you weren’t sure which you’d keep and which you might offer for sale. I’d have guessed you’d have kept Zing and selling Race
When do yearlings go off to learn the beginnings of being a race horse?
Glad to hear they both like to run!!
You’re thinking of that whackjob Dr. Kendall Hansen, who named the horse after himself. Classy he is not. He caused a stir with Churchill Downs officials when he informed them he planned to dye the horse’s tail blue for the Derby. They said, “no, you’re not.” He capitulated, but did later do the dye job for another stakes, as well as having Hansen accompanied by Hooters girls (or some such) to the paddock.
Thanks! That’s right- I just remembered a gray!
