Foal Watch 2021 - 'Tis the Season!

I think your Bella’s filly is going to be a stunner. Bella is a good looking mare and, combined with those Bernardini genetics from her sire, your filly may become a beauty queen. :slightly_smiling_face:

You mentioned that your New Years Day orphan is a big colt and now Entice’s NYD is a big one as well, straight out of the mare. It’ll be interesting to see how they grow.

Congratulations and thanks for the photos.

Wow, love the last one here. If you’ve got room on your wall, this one is a framer!

We have a mare at the barn due to foal out - only in to get the Hoosier stamp on their papers. The mare is owned by people who don’t really care about her, she was here last year for her maiden foal. I want to brush her so bad, but need the owners to actually… show up so I can ask if that’s ok. I don’t know why they bring her to our barn. We don’t do foal watch, we bed on shavings, etc. They know this and bring her anyways. If I were the BO I would decline to take her. But alas, here we are.

I know jack all about foaling, but her teats are beginning to fill. She isn’t soft behind yet, and the foal hasn’t “dropped”.

Is there anything I can do to help her out? Maybe I’ll ask BO to give them a call to ask if it’s ok if I groom her. Poor lady.

ETA: I am the Angel of Birthing, though, I swear. Of all the babies born at the barn (again, no foal watch, no nothing - no way would I have anything of mine foal out here), I have walked in on about 75% of them right as they’re on the way out. Most of the time when I do that, I’m busy and have no time to deal with it - once I was on my way out the door to a show, braided and everything.

I’m kidding anyway. Just kind of an inside running joke

Nice babies and mares and great job! Tell me about your stallion - he’s gorgeous! What is his breeding? I bred Thoroughbreds for years, standing two stallions, so I have a true weakness for them. Congratulations!

WOW search the female line in the 5th Gen!!! literally stunning. 9 green star mares/14 in total.

Turn To 2X, Teddy 6X, ManO’War 9X mostly thru War Admiral, Nearco2X, Hyperion 3X, Mahmoud 2X, Princequillo 4X, My Babu, La Troienne. 2X, Bleinheim 4X and Black Toney - so many to mention. edit to explain this data is just from the females in the 5th.

Now I know 5th Gen is too far back to matter to some - but none of these were shabby producers and all of those names show up closer!!

Saketini is by Bernardini out of Mining My Business, by Mining. Saketini made two starts at 5, finished third once and earned 3,000. He remained intact because he is extremely well mannered and exceptionally well bred with a very strong female family. Mining My Business is the dam of Real Cozzy, a G2 winner who was 2nd in the KY Oaks, and dam of other stakes producing daughters. Mining My Business (out of Really Blue) is also half sister to Real Quiet. Saketini’s 4th dam, Gay Hostess, is the dam of Majestic Prince. If he had any kind of race record, he’d be breeding race horses in Kentucky…instead he’s going prelim eventing and breeding sport horses (but who knows, I may race a few!).

He bred 5 WB (eventing, jumper, and dressage) mares in 2020, looking forward to seeing how they turn out!

For those following along…I bred Shezagreatgal back on foal heat and she was confirmed pregnant with a heartbeat a couple days ago.

I’m trying to be super nice to this pregnant mare as I feel sorry for her that her owners are entirely neglectful. She isn’t mine, I don’t own the place she is at, and lots of things are outside my control. I brushed her last night, she really liked that.

I have a question. As the teats fill in, what are they supposed to feel like?

Hers feel hard, with a pitting edema type consistency. She does not appreciate them handled. She is not a maiden, but has only had one foal prior.

I’m worried about her.

They usually feel pretty firm to me, though that’s a subjective description, of course.

Do they feel like they pit under your fingers when you push on them?

Sorry, I’m ignorant.

Yes, that’s normal. Many times the udder will fill huge, but it is pitting edema and will slowly turn to milk a few days before she foals.

All my mares loved being groomed in the last week or two before foaling, even the stand-offish redhead. They start to shed a lot (even in Dec/Jan for early foals, due to hormones) and will be itchy. Grooming can release oxytocin, so don’t be surprised if, within 24hrs of foaling, she starts dripping milk after you curry her (happened with 2 of mine!). Grooming 10-15min a day lets me monitor the HQ muscle tone, and also helps me bond with the mares a bit, so they are quite comfortable with my presence around their newborn foal.

Ok great. I was worried! Thank you for the insight, so I didn’t have to google “hard boobs” at work haha
