Foal Watch 2024

Baby Lusitano #2 arrived yesterday, another filly, a bay this time. Mama is grey and I haven’t seen good enough photos to tell whether the filly will stay bay. The vet who came to check on her brought her young daughter along and posted some adorable photos of the little girl and the filly.

DH is coming with me to the barn tomorrow, and he has a knack for getting great photos, so I hope to have something to post soon.

Well my mare who’s gone 335 on her first two babies is at 337- we had good bag development 10 days ago that plateaued. Now we seem to be heading slowly the right direction. Good bag (although fluid is still clearish not white) nice tail softening. She spent last night up and down a little. Hoping early this week :crossed_fingers:

I…uh…bought another mare…

I was not shopping, I swear! A breeder in GA announced she was liquidating her herd (she’s in her 80s), and she happened to have a paternal sister to my Arielle on her list. Naturally, I couldn’t resist taking a peek, and the family resemblance is uncanny! It’ll be a few weeks before I bring her home. She’s (ducks and mumbles) 22 this year; I realize that fertility at this age is a huge gamble, but it’s one I’m willing to take. This photo is about 10 years old; I will of course share more when I actually see her in the flesh. Cross your fingers and toes for me that she checks out and is still fertile! If I can get a keeper filly from her, then her purchase price will have been the steal of the century. She’s also broke to ride and reportedly very quiet; if nothing else, that’s one more riding horse option in the field.

Meanwhile, Sydney is 318 days today and continuing to bag up steadily. She is also absolutely enormous!

Fuego is in the piranha stage now. Lol. We are being careful to not let him get too out of hand since he doesn’t have his mom around to keep him in check. It’s great that he’s feeling good, though!

Our other mare is at 322 days. No wax yet but baby is shifting back.

Other good news, it looks like the twin pinch on Fionna was successful so we have just the one in there growing for 2025.

Sorry it took me a while, but here is Lusi baby Ulrica with her dam Lagoa Santana. Born on Saturday at Lola’s barn.

Sydney’s day 320 video is up on my farm page: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/kVoi9PjkHALfGRFN/?mibextid=WC7FNe.

[proof that you can take the academic out of the classroom, but you can’t take the teacher out of the former academic…]

I think we’re about two weeks out now…give or take a week, because maiden mares do what they want. :woman_shrugging: Conveniently, it looks like we will probably be breeding her mother (Arielle) the first week in April. Not so conveniently, Arielle’s first show of the season is supposed to be April 5th. If I were taking bets, I’d lay odds on Sydney deciding to foal AND Arielle ovulating that day!

Isn’t that always how it works out, @Montanas_Girl? Good luck!

I think we are probably within 48-72 hours of foaling. I’m out of the country until tomorrow night (they are in very capable hands and I’m not needed), so I’m pretty sure for that reason alone it’ll be tonight! Though I am a bit surprised it didn’t happen as soon as I left!

My last one came early! Went out to the barn 7 a.m. dry foal standing up nursing. Maiden mare. What rotten luck huh.

Congratulations!

Congratulations on an easy surprise foaling, @pony_grandma!

@grzywinskia, did you have a foal last night?

Ugh this mare is wearing me out. No foal last night. She was moderately uncomfortable until about midnight. Waxed, pH low. I can’t believe she hasn’t gone.

How’s it going @grzywinskia?

Y’all we’ve been waxed for two days. pH 6.2 for at least two days. Very relaxed vulva this am. Around the tail head is jelly. And nothing…… for my sanity I really need this baby tonight!

Hoping for a smooth (and incipient) foaling.

The waiting is the hardest part (makes me think of the late Tom Petty.)

Hang in there, @grzywinskia! She can’t hold out forever.

Day 325 for Sydney. Like her mother, she is going to need a skateboard for her belly before foaling time gets here. :joy:

Still no foals for @weixiao and @grzywinskia?
