Foal Watch 2024

Thank you! I’ll get more pictures as he starts to explore outside. I opened the door to the outside yesterday and he was curious but when he went out mom herded him back in gently. I have a feeling he’ll be harder for her to keep in today.

He’s so beautiful! LOVE his long spindles!!!

Mom and baby spent more time outside today. Yesterday they left the stall briefly before mom herded baby back inside. Today baby was determined to explore and try out his legs. Mom is going to get in shape chasing him. Cuddling baby during naps has become a family sport, though my daughter is trying to claim as many as possible. She’s impatiently waiting for the baby earmarked for her which is still cooking. Here my picture tax for today.

Arielle read the textbook beautifully this cycle and is in good heat with 3+ edema and a 34 mm follicle. I ordered a collection for tomorrow to breed her on Thursday evening. Now let’s hope she continues to stay on board with the plan!

I got my mare bred last Wednesday. We had given her a hotshot on the 9th, hoping to get her bred on the 17th or 18th, but when we did an ultrasound on the 14th, she was ready to breed that afternoon. She had a 44mm follicle, so we asked if they could do a collection that day, but the earliest was noon on the next day, so we did the 3-hour drive to the collection facility and were home by 4, and the vet came by 5, so now we are crossing our fingers that it would work out. The vet said that she had never had a maiden go that fast and with such a big follicle.

i was dragging a big cedar tree from out of the creek and it spooked Brenna and RIzada. Happened to have camera ready and caught them on a little run-about

Nice! My baby would love running in your pasture. He’s already doing speed tests. For now he’s stuck in the turnout until he can go out in the bigger space with everyone else.

Festivity…what a lovely balanced foal. Keep the pics and videos coming.

Thank you! I think he’s great and so does he, it’s nice to hear that others also think he looks good. This was this morning’s run and then snack break. So far he has two gaits, walk and canter. I don’t think I’ve really seen him trot. When he’s not running or getting into trouble he’s eating or sleeping. I think poor mom is going to have her hands full.

We bred Arielle last night and confirmed TWO ovulations this morning. Everything looked good with her and the semen both. Even my vet, who is one of the most pessimistic people I know during breeding season, was very happy this morning.

Let the two week wait commence!

Hop checked in foal to Speightsong this morning. Foal will be an Indiana sired and bred horse, and was bred for longevity and soundness.

Congratulations!

My mare’s at 317 days… we’re in the home stretch! (I’m choking up just typing it).
She just yesterday started to look VERY pregnant.
However she doesn’t have any milk or fullness yet in her udder.
Although everything I’ve read said that mares generally bag up 4-2 weeks before giving birth, I’ve also read that maiden mares might not make milk until just before the baby is born.
Anyone have any input on this? Hard to know when to start really watching her if I don’t have the milk clue to go by.

You can join https://www.facebook.com/groups/DressageBreeders/ which is a great group to ask all and any questions about breeding and foaling, to get great advice. I joined as I buy custom and in-utero foals and wanted to be informed on the breeding, gestation and foaling aspects. They were a great networking source when one of my bought foal’s Mom died and he need a nurse mare.

Congrats! Maiden mares can be tricky, some have read the rule book and some have not. I currently have one that is at 336 days that I’m watching. My vet thought she might foal after my other mare foaled but so far that has not happened. At 320 days she had basically no filling in her udder, but some edema in front of it. Now she has some filling in her udder and I can get a couple drops of fluid for milk testing. Otherwise I’m watching for behavior changes, the muscles in her butt getting soft, and her vulva relaxing. So far I haven’t missed anything but we’ll see how much warning, if any she gives me.
