Fun horse names

There’s a horse way back in the pedigree of my old TB called Bunty Lawless. I always thought she sounded like a naughty flapper :joy:

I’d forgotten about that!!

I detect that you are probably not from Texas, New Mexico or Oklahoma with connections to QH racing. Especially not during the period that the cartels virtually took over QH racing.

Read Bloodlines. With a trigger warning.

People should know.

Fair enough (note: not who you’re responding to)

I’m not denying or arguing otherwise, I don’t know QH racing well and prefer TBs myself.
But, as far as I know we didn’t have any really wild and crazy stuff happening at the track I worked at. I was security - I’d certainly hope I’d have noticed.

Sure we had some who probably were banned or suspended for typical racing shenanigans though no single scenarios stand out to me these few years later and we didn’t have any huge scandals I was aware of. Most of us working the backside knew who the good guys were and who the not-so-good guys, were.

It’s not that I disbelieve you - I’m sure there was and perhaps still is a cartel or The Cartel involved in racing to some extent. Just as there’s plenty of other criminal elements involved in other moneyed enterprises throughout human history. What I’m doubtful of is that nearly every horse with Cartel in the name has a connection to The Cartel. I saw plenty of Cartel this and Cartel that in names at the track I was at and we were no where near TX and these horses were sometimes even bred in this state.

This whole “you need to get educated” discussion is getting repetitive. You’ve linked to the books, if we, generally, wish to read them, we will do so. Let’s quit beating a dead horse, to use a rather unfortunate metaphor.

Sorry if this, post-edit and with some rethinking, still seems snide or dismissive. I thought better of my initial post and revised it.

EDIT: Edited to remove the snark as I realized it was completely uncalled for. My sincerest, genuine aplogies and please, everyone, have a wonderful evening!

It is also annoying to have people who know nothing about the subject be so dismissive of a traumatic period in QH racing that was very bad for people and horses. That is what is prompting the responses. Perhaps those who keep digging at it, to have the last word, could take a turn at letting it go.

Law enforcement risked their lives to break it up. So how is it a surprise to you that the disrespect will get a reaction from those who had to be close to it. Maybe being a little more respectful of someone else’s experience is a change that could be tried, too.

You also have the option not to respond. Not to take another dig.

Apologies, I meant no offense and truly thought better of my initial post, hence the edit. I, specifically, was just expressing skepticism that it’s that entrenched. I worked at a track in the midwest where I doubt we have a cartel involved in anything and had assumed, perhaps naively so, that the whole “Cartel” name line was some odd quirk of QH breeders. In my area, at this point, it frankly probably is QH breeders coming up with names combining the sire and dam’s names.

If you’ve been through anything traumatic relating to those incidents in racing, I’m sorry, because no one should have to experience anything like that.

I’m not being disrespectful of your experience at this point - I just didn’t realize the extent to which the cartel was involved. I believe I’d heard of one of those books you linked to at some point but I’ve honestly never read any as QH racing literature isn’t something I’d ordinarily seek out.

EDIT: I also don’t see how the poster you did respond to was being disrespectful - they also came across as skeptical.

You’re correct, I’m not in the in crowd, just someone with a basic familiarity with QH pedigrees. Instead of telling me I “need education” and assigning me homework, a simple “yes, the vast majority of Corona Cartel’s get with Cartel in their name are owned by drug cartels” would have sufficed.

That’s fair. Thanks.

Years ago I was at a show. I heard the announcer say, “Now entering ring 1…Sally Something on Abi-Normal”. Needless to say, everyone over ago 40 giggled.

Did you know that that Sofa King horse name originated with a British ad for the company Sofa King?

I heard about it at least 10 years ago. The ad was banned for the line “Our prices are Sofa King low!”

LOL

I agree, but remember, this is COTH. What would suffice on an ordinary board is never quite enough for some COTHers.
I’m sorry you got caught on one’s hook.

I would never have suspected the presence of an actual cartel, either. I mean, look at the TWH stallion The Pusher. Who in their right mind names a horse that? Or “Drug Dealer” (The Pusher’s sire)? Or one of his sons, Addiction? Unless he’s addicted to pain meds because of the Big Lick pads and chains and chemicals …

OK, back to the QHs and other show names …

This one is funny because all of these horses raced in the same race with post positions next to each other:
Post position 3: Clearly Mad
Post position 4: Talktoeachother
Post position 5: Confess

I swear those horses were intentionally put in those positions!

Usually I don’t reply to old threads (or threads at all), but I couldn’t help myself with this one. Enjoy!
