Oh, I missed that chapter…or maybe I didn’t get to it yet.
So…are we there yet?
Definitely have the bank double check that funds are available before the check is deposited. The Christmas Miracle will not be complete until check clears AFTER the check has actually been received.
Well? That check should have been mailed a week ago today IF it was “In the mail” last Saturday.

Although part of me secretly bumps this thread up thinking that at some point the people in Florida are going to hope on board and it will become one of those wild rides that lives long in the CoTH collective memory.[/QUOTE]
I’m not going to say that hasn’t crossed my mind RR, but not so much because I want it to become a memorable COTH event, more because I can see them yelling at me at threatening to sue me for harassment, libel, slander and whatever else they choose to throw my way…
But anyway, I’ve been traveling for the last two days, and spending time with family for two days before that, so I’ve not been in touch with my friend. I sent her a text last night- I’ll make sure to call today if I don’t hear back!
Keep hanging on to the edges of your seats!
Aaarrrggg!! I checked in when I saw the latest post - hoping for an update. eponacowgirl, you tease us so
I’ll second that - you are a bad tease! Here I thought the “big” update had finally arrived!
Just a PSA for anyone who might find themselves waiting for “a check in the mail” on a future transaction:
Have the buyer wire the money to your account. It is easily done, might cost you (or them) a $15 wire fee, but the money arrives in one day, and your bank can confirm receipt. If you bank on-line, you will actually see when it has arrived if you check your computer. And then you don’t have to fool around with the old “it’s lost in the mail” routine.
i live here in florida(not sure where horse is) but would love to know who has this horse down here. i do a lot of business with the hunter/jumper people, even though i event. i sell a lot of hunter/ jumpers. so, if please pm me with the info, would love to go check up on the horse if it is closeby!
Alright, y’all-
are you ready for this one?
My friend has the check in her hot little hand.
But they’ve now asked her to hold it until after the 1st.
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! I was being pleasantly optomistic until this point, but I mean SERIOUSLY?! The parents really want their daughter to have a shot at winning some title or another before shes too old, so they’re willing to drop a butt load of money on these shows and training and whatnot, but they can’t have a rather small sum of money in their bank account to pay for the horse?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I wish my friend had just told them to shove it a long time ago. Now I’m actually worried.
I CAN’T MAKE THIS CRAP UP, FOLKS.
This is killing me!
It just keeps going on and on and on…
Does the seller feel any of the frustration we feel?
I guess we are a little closer to the end. Maybe.
Sing after me…
Yes it goes on and on my friend, this is the ‘sale’ that never ends
Has your friend
Has your friend seriously bumped her head~ I would have been there along time ago & picked up the horse~ If they have drug her along this long & now they can’t afford the money in the bank until the 1st~ I would be worried about the care that the horse would be getting~If I was her and not able to check on the horse myself I would be taking up some of the coth members offers to check on him~How does she even know they still have him~ There is another thread on here I was reading where a lady let someone have the horse with the promise that they would pay her in a few weeks~ Well she never got paid and the lady that has the colt traded him for another horse~Now she does not have the money or the horse~If I was your friend I would be asking you to post on the board if there is anyone in such & such area that can go check on my horse and possibly pick him up for her until she can come & get him~~ Why is she so adament on selling to these losers~ Sorry but that is what they are~ If she cares about the horse she will send someone to check on him & get him back~ If they can not have the money in their account to cover the check if it is over I believe $400 or $500 dollars that is a felony for passing a bad check~If they are asking her to hold the check they they likely are asking the feed store and such to do so as well~ How long will it be before he is not being fed or taken care of~
Ya know…once a check is written, no matter the date on it, it is legal tender and can be cashed. If I were her, I’d call the bank, verify whether or not funds are available, and stop dicking around. They have the goods in hand. She needs to get PAID. This is CRAZY.
She’s frustrated, but I think the thought of paying off her credit card bill and rent for the rest of the school year is more exciting than the possible terror that could ensue.
You also have to know that things have the most rediculous way of working out for my friends and I. Not that this makes it any less stressful- but we always manage to squeak out of some potentially nasty, uncomfortable or un-thought-out situations. Of course, this leaves us more and more in a situation to be burned, but we continue to have this kind of scary good luck. I don’t know if its devine intervention or what, but it happens.
A different friend and I bought horses every summer in Western KY and I hauled them home with me to Chicago. I always managed to find someone willing to lend me their pasture for the summer if I would just feed and water their horses for them and I managed to turn horses over and make giant profits every year. I never had a horse fail a vet check, they always sold JUST in the nick of time before I was going to have to haul them back down to KY with me and I never had to put a shoe, vaccine or do vet work on any of them. I know now that this was pure luck, not neccessarily skill, but it sure worked to get my butt through college!
Similarly, one of my friends was selling her OTTB- she’d had at least four trainers tell her that “this horse could be your rolex horse” but she just didn’t have the time or money for him. She rode what was to be one of her last clinics with him, and the clinician came up afterward and offered to lease the horse for his working student, who would keep him for the next few months and then return him to her. It gave her enough time to get settled and on her feet and she got a fantasically trained horse back.
These are just a FEW of the situations I can think of off hand, so I think my friend is just figuring it’ll all work out…
Thats my long-winded way of saying- cross your fingers.
I JUST CAN’T BELIEVE IT!!! well yes I can… Your friend is being jerked around… they are getting a free lease and a nice horse and your friend is left holding the bag. I would cash the check anyway… they have had the horse the alloted amt of time… they have fenageled their way out of the agreement your friend agreed to and into the agreement they origionally wanted… to have the horse until Jan… then it will be can you hold the check until Feb… etc… etc… I feel for you in dealing with your friend but do please keep us posted…
Time to call the bank, verify the funds, and GET PAID! Seriously… They wrote the check. If they can’t swing their mortgage or trainers fees that is their problem.
COTH ate my first reply…let’s try again.
This friend of yours is getting herself screwed majorly. I bet you that the check won’t even clear after the 1st.
Has there been a bill of sale written up? I don’t remember seeing any mention of that in previous posts.
If not, and if I were the owner of this poor horse, I’d be ripping up that check after this latest “Oh, can you wait a week to cash it?” spectacle and getting my horse on a trailer home tonight. That’s complete and utter BS.
I wish I could send a note along with my monthly checks to my mortgage company to “please wait a week to cash this”. That’d be nice.
Time to wake up and smell the coffee and sell the horse to someone who’s SERIOUS. Were it mine, it would have been on a trailer home a month ago.
Lessons learned, I hope, by all parties.
Sorry to say it, Eponacowgirl. I know you personally and know that you’re an excellent horseperson and you’ve had a string of good luck with the horses that you’ve bought and sold…but this could have gone (and COULD STILL go) seriously awry at the very last minute. It leaves a really bad taste in my mouth.
I’ll swim upstream here and say, eh, she’s waited this long, what’s another few days?
With the weekend and the holiday, it would be hard to get the check through much sooner anyway. I would be on the phone with that bank at 9:00 AM on the 2nd to verify the funds, though. Then deposit it that instant.
I second the earlier vote for the wire transfer. Far, far superior in every way.
I think she should be at the bank the moment it opens on the 2nd. Is it a bank that’s local to her as well? I’d go straight there and get cash. That is if the money is available on the 2nd.
Yeah, I think they’re jerking her around, but in her shoes after all the drama and the time, I’d probably give them an extra three or four days.

I agree.
But ya know, if nothing else, aren’t we all getting a boatload of ideas here on how a horseless rider can do WEF on zero money?? Problem is, I bet a shedload of unscrupulous trainers will be trying to pull this sh*t next year.
