Games Trainers Play: The Florida Horse Saga

Here is one for you!!! Is it a check from the trainer who is waiting for the larger funds for the horse to clear her bank before the check is good or is the check from the actual buyers. If it is a trainer’s check and the trainer took money and put in their account that would be improper transaction

I am betting that it is a trainer check…so please let us know

By the way…an out of state check will be held usually 7-10 days so your friend will still have to wait longer

Not a trainer check-personal check from purchasing party.

Epona - I always knew this girl wasn’t the brightest crayon in the box. This totally confirmed that thought in my head.

I’d be calling the bank the moment they told me that crap…this is beyond rediculous. How come stuff like this works out for her and I keep getting screwed…ugg! Seriously!

Sorry…its been a long day!

My fingers are crossed. I do hope it works out for her. One never knows.

Has anyone said what town the horse is now in? I’m in Fl though waaayyyy down here…Hopefully, the check clears and all will be great…but if it doesn’t then maybe plan B should be in place…

It still might be a really good idea if someone did just check on the horse for her.

re: confirming money available

Banks will not confirm amounts available in the accounts over the phone anymore. You have to go to said bank in person, unless there is a branch in her area, she will have to deposit the check and pray.

Most of the banks are closed this weekend, and the “first” isn’t that far away—as long as “after the first” isn’t the THIRTIETH!

IF there is a branch of THEIR bank in the area, I would cash the check there as soon as possible. Cash it in HER bank, they can’t take it back out of your bank account later.

Good luck. I’d just have my fingers crossed for the next few days.

This has to be one of the biggest cliffhangers in COTH history!!!

A friend was selling her horse - posted on the internet - a family from the NE came to look at him and a few other horses (we’re in mid-atlantic). OF course they came on the worst day - cold, freezing rain, sleet, snow/ice. No indoor, rode the horse in the barn aisle. About a week or so later friend hears from them, love the horse would she send him up to RI for a trial. Hmmm What she ended up doing was: 1) getting a good contract written up 2) getting a check for the entire amount for the horse - if he was a go all is well, if he was returned, she would return their money 3) potential buyer paid for shipping to RI and would pay for shipping if he returned 4) Insurance - potential buyer paid to have him insured during the trial phase. I’m sure she had other incidentals in there - like maybe a health certificate for travel (which would also cover any "he came to us unsound issues) The deal worked out quite well for her - the family’s trainer Nixed the horse, but they loved him anyway and kept him - friend is happy her horse is with a great family.

It must vary between banks, because I just confirmed a check amount over the phone a month or so ago. It was not a local bank, so I just called them up and asked about whether the check would clear in that account. They told me right that minute, it would clear, but they could not guarantee what would happen by the time the check got to them.

Again, wire transfer is the best way to go!

You all realize ,don’t you ,that we are going to have to eat some serious crow when the check get’s cashed next week…Right???
That said ,I think I would have added on interest to his sale price for every day past the original sale by date that I didn’t have the cash. would have been a good thing to add into the contract.Price as of Dec. 20th is …$ ,every day there after interest accrues. She could have had her money 2 weeks ago if holding the check would mean an extra 2 or 3 hundred.

If there is a local branch of the bank that the check is written on, you can do what is called ‘hammering’ a check. You take it to the bank and have it converted into a cashiers check. The funds are removed from the account immediately and you don’t have to walk around with cash in your pocket. Deposit the cashier’s check into your own account at your leisure.
It gets the funds out of the check writer’s account faster than depositing it and having it go thru the normal routing.

I work for a bank. First, the buyers should’ve either wired you the money or sent you a cashier’s check. By sending you a personal check, they made it a lot more difficult for you to get the funds.

If you have a nearby branch of the bank the funds are drawn on, go there and they’ll be able to either cash it or tell you they can’t at this time.

If you take it to your bank and deposit it, it’s subject to hold (and it likely will be held for at least 5 business days.)

If you have the check in hand, deposit it. Any NSF or OD fees are their problem. But don’t touch the funds until you’re sure the check clears because if it comes bank, your bank will charge you.

Yep. I’d be at the bank, first thing tomorrow morning. It’s only one day early, after all. Shouldn’t be a problem, right? :stuck_out_tongue:

But ya know, if nothing else, aren’t we all getting a boatload of ideas here on how a horseless rider can do WEF on zero money?? Problem is, I bet a shedload of unscrupulous trainers will be trying to pull this sh*t next year.

WA, you truly are an innocent in some ways. What makes you think most of the trainers unscrupulous enough, don’t already know about this schtik?

This was the inspiration for MC Hammer’s song, “Hammertime” by the way.

Not really.:lol::lol::lol: Although his entourage/posse got him involved in horses & he lost quite a bit of money, so it’s possible.

The plot thickens…ya know that check ain’t going to be good on the second with the first being a holiday. Any deposits they make tomorrow, the 31st won’t clear, even an auto deposit like a payroll check can take a day or two to clear. When one of those days is a holiday it just takes longer.

Holding that check until after the first is liable to turn into holding it until after the 7th. tell her not to write any checks on that until she is dam sure it clears…and an out of state personal check on a different bank is going to take an additional 5 days to release the funds-if it clears.

Keep us posted.

Best deal I ever found was escrow.com. I bought a saddle. for a fee they held the money while the owner shipped it to me and I decided whether I wanted to keep it. Had I sent it back, I would have gotten my money back when the seller got the saddle back.

I think they even do cars now.

Sorry, but even if the buyer didn’t have liquid funds in the amount needed to buy the horse, they could have gone to their bank and got a short-term loan secured by a CD, next paycheck or something so they could send a cashier’s check. If you have good credit and a good relationship with your bank, this should take all of 15 minutes. I hope this all works out, but I’m having serious doubts.
