Games Trainers Play: The Florida Horse Saga

Oh. My. God. These people have brass ones, don’t they.

QUOTE FROM THE E-MAIL " …I have over $1000.00 invested in your horse already and the prepurchase exam is going to be between $600 and a $1000, depending on the number of x-rays that we need to take; so I will have somewhere between $1600 and $2000 invested before I know 100% that the purchase is going to take place. That is a lot of money, over and above the purchase price, and I hope you will approve an extension until Friday, January 18 th.""

Your friend needs to reply in writing. “Any monies you have chosen to spend over and above the purchase price are just that. Monies YOU CHOSE to spend. All actions beyond our sales contract are YOUR CHOICE and, therefore, YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. Full payment is to be wired to my bank account by XXXX or the price of returning the horse will be your responsibility…also as per our written agreement.”

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I’ve been following this since day one. And all I can say is ‘Wow.’

I’m just speechless . . .

The pictures make him look rather unhappy, as well.

Melissa, I did tell my friend that Jason offered to call… I’m about to call and tell the guy where to go.

Then if she approves this second extension, I’d say she deserves whatever she gets and if I were you, I’d tell her that you won’t discuss it with her at. all. anymore.

She’s gone against everyone’s advice from the getgo who -told- her that this was the likely scenario… . and has voluntarily gotten herself into a mess. The whole conversation between trainer and herself sounds like the trainer was blowing smoke up her a** to buy time. No way is that person going to alienate a paying client, she’s trying to smooth the hackles down by catering to her once aggression didn’t work. If she buys it this time, well that’s just too bad, I don’t think anyone would want to help her. I know I wouldn’t if my friend had made so many bad judgment calls in a row.

I’d say the vet check was a moot point now. It’s been nearly six weeks they’ve had the horse, they should have lined up vet checks as soon as he got off the trailer. They’ve had this long to f*** him up. The whole thing stinks of a cheap novel.

No, the whole thing is starting to stink like another Chanter saga.

>>The whole thing stinks of a cheap novel.<<

Trust me, if I ever proposed something like this for a story, my editors would send it back with comments like ‘contrived’ and ‘wouldn’t ever happen in real life’ <G>. How little they know of the craziness that exists in the horse world…

It would truly make his day. I just gave him the latest update. He wasn’t speechless.

I’ve followed this thread for a while… but I have nothing useful to contribute, I just thought I would say Poor Poneeee :frowning: I hope everything gets worked out so that his well being is no longer in limbo.

This mother/daughter trainer combo really do suck, don’t they? I am sorry your friend gets to learn a life lesson the hard way.
When I was young my finances put me in a lot of positions where I just couldn’t get done what needed to be done. Nowadays I could afford to take the time to fly down there, lawyer letter in hand, and engage the service of a transport company to bring the horse back. But when I was a student there were times I supported myself on the VISA card cause I didn’t even have any change left under the sofa cushions.
Your friend may or may not get screwed. But if there is a next time she needs to stick to the good old fashioned cash in hand all sales are final method. Sending a horse off on trial is great for those of us who have money and will just be mightily annoyed. Not for someone that is probably living a little better now that the board bill is gone and just cannot afford to do what she needs to do.
I just really hope that the sale goes through in an acceptable manner, soon.

Unbelievable :frowning:

So, they don’t plan to have a farrier avalable to put shoes back on the horse? That excuse is as lame as all the other ones they have come up with

If the seller goes along with this, she deserves to be out both the horse and the money :dead:

Well, sh*t!! This is what happens when you take a horse on trial for several weeks and have him shipped from hundreds of miles away! Duh, yeah, it costs money. And prepurchase exams cost money…“over and above the purchase price.”

These people are stupid. It would have been cheaper (and easier) for the kid to just fly up to Kentucky with a parent or the trainer to try the horse in the first place. I wouldn’t want them to have my horse. Your friend’s horse sounds like a good boy and I hope he doesn’t end up with these idiots.

Ummmmmmm, I detect a word trick that car salesmen - and we all know how ethical they are - use. The folks in FL have not “invested” any money in this horse; they have “spent” money on the horse. In the same vein, a new car is not an investment - or rather, it is a rather bad investment - since it immediately loses value when you drive it off the dealer’s lot.

The horse has been in FL for weeks and there has been plenty of time for it to be vetted. I’m betting that the next big update in this trainwreck will be that the horse fails the vet check, but the folks in FL are so enamored of this horse because of his personality that they “will be happy to take this horse off your hands” for meat price.

Yes, Ravenclaw, it would have been easier and cheaper for all concerned if they came to try the horse – but then they wouldn’t have had a free horse for show season, doncha know.

As I’ve said before … poor horse.

Epona, is your friend giving any thought to the possibility this sale might fall thru? what she would then do about the horse? He seems like the true victim in this situation - no wonder he looks unhappy in the photos.

If I were her, I’d send a reply back, stating she has been more than fair and has been trying to work with them, but the trial date, that they set, after moving it several times, stands at the 15th. At that point, the horse’s purchase price is paid in full, wired immediately, or the horse is on a trailer home at their cost. I would also say the purchase price is no longer negotiable. They have had over a month to vet him, if they didn’t, they will just have to do a post-purchase exam. Up to this point she has been suckered, but the bottom line, she still owns this horse, and thus she doesn’t have to play by their rules. It’s time for her to play hardball, and hopefully she sees that now as well. It sucks to learn life’s lessons the hard way, but she won’t benefit by being told, “I told you so.” She doesn’t have to be a victim, but she has to stand up and be a hardcore witch, with a capital B.

If your friend agrees to anymore extensions then she is beyond foolish- according to your post a couple of days ago, she now knows something is very wrong and she is being taken advantage of- now that she realizes this, there is no excuse for letting it continue to happen- you can only be taken advantage of if you let yourself- her decision whether they continue to do it or not
Epona- does the agreement expressly permit them to show the horse? If not, (sorry I know I am repeating myself but I cannot stop myself) then she needs to tell them in writing that they cannot show this horse this weekend. They have had him for two months and have already shown him- enough already- either they want the horse or they don’t and another show is not going to make or break the deal (I will be stunned if they actually buy this horse or your friend ever sees him again).
“invested” money my a**- they have incurred expenses related to their unreasonable position that they permitted a two month trial period and show the horse (and since they don’t want to pull his shoes- safe bet none of this “investment” was in farrier care)

As far as I know post dated checks are illegal everywhere and certainly would have nothing to do with whether a contract is binding or not.

As said a billion times she needs to be firm and tell them their expenses are not her problem and they have until the agreed upon date. If that is in writing. If it wasn’t I’d have the horse hauled off right now as it sounds as though they have already violated the original terms of the “agreement” in numerous ways. He still belongs to her.

And since when does doing a PPE entitle you to anything-at-all except the results of the PPE?

this is truly bizarre…
