Games Trainers Play: The Florida Horse Saga

Why is the friend being such a wuss? I don’t get it.

Because she does not want the horse back, can’t afford to board/retrain/remarket him and, needing the money for rent and tuition, is unwilling to let go of the dream of getting $$$ out the guy in FL. Nowhere in this scenario is any concern for the horse. Confronting the “buyer” would mean facing her own financial problems.

So what was supposed to be a 2 week trial has now turned into a 6+ weeks 2 horse shows trial (that you know of).

Were the pictures from the show all of him stopping at the 1st fence?

The seller is being taken for ride. Too bad she didn’t go down to the beach house. At least she would have gotten a little enjoyment from this sad saga. She needs to grow a set & stop giving in. She’s going to end up only getting paid pennies for this horse cause they’ll wear her down.

Poor horse indeed. :frowning:

It’s hard to have much sympathy for someone who shows so little concern for her horse. The horse is her responsibility . It was not a sale, it was a trial that could always fall through. She set up the problem and it’s up to her to solve it even if it costs her money.

Is your friend aware that her horse is not capable of phoning her up or writing a postcard telling her how much he hates what’s going on?

Of course your friend can go get the horse before the 15th. The “buyer” has so far violated just about every aspect of the original oral contract.

The horse is going to be unsound when he gets shipped home (assuming that he doesn’t just get abandoned or sold for a low-ball price to somebody else in Florida).

The seller, your friend, is going to end up out of pocket, the only question is to whom she will be paying and for what. To the vet, to deal with the horse’s unsoundness? To a trainer, to deal with the bad experiences the horse has now had? To the shipper, when the horse “fails” the vetting and is sent back COD? To the “buyers,” because they kill the horse (literally) or low-ball an offer?

Please, please, please, help this horse out. Get the owner on the phone with the kidnappers and get her to tell them that they must stop riding the horse. No show, no rides. Now. And they either send the horse back on a trailer tomorrow or they wire the money directly to the seller’s bank.

Then inform them of the same in writing.

Reminds me of one of my maternal grnadmother’s sayings:
“There is none so blind as them as won’t see”

egad!
I’m ready to go get the damned horse and I haven’t even been following this all that closely.

Ok, enough is enough already.

Lauren, get me the “buyer’s” and their “trainer’s” phone numbers. I feel like yelling at people. I’ll call on behalf of your friend and demand that full price of the horse be paid by wire transfer by EOD on the 15th, or the horse be returned TO THE SELLER (as in, on her property) no later than January 17, or legal action will be taken. That gives 2 days travel time after their already-extended “trial” is over on the 15th. 2 days is plenty to make it from Ocala-ish, FL, to Nashvegas-ish, TN.

I’m good at yelling at people. Let me at 'em. C’mon!

ETA: Then, give me your friends number, because she needs to be thoroughly shaken for getting herself into this mess in the first place.

And on the 18th the vet will have an emergency call so the ppe will have to be rescheduled at a later date

giving time for the “buyer”, “trainer” and “daughter” to disappear. Funny that Jan 15th was originally the date they wanted the trial to end … “daughter” due back at school somewhere on the 18th?

Bingo.

I don’t know if anyone has said this, but where are your friends parents right now? I know she is an adult but I also know if my dad saw me making BAD financial decisions he would step in and take over or at least give me advice and help me make things right (and I’m 26!). She needs a real adult right now (even if it’s not a parent), someone who has some life experience and won’t be taken advantage of, someone that will scare the he** out of these people so they know your friend means business.

This horse needs to come home now and if your friend cares about her horse then she shouldn’t allow these people to buy it because personally I would not have the heart to sell my horse to a crazy person/bad rider/bad trainer/crook (which these people are all of the above). Sometimes you have to think about the horse and not the money, which in this case she doesn’t even have the money so she needs to just be thinking about the horse.

I have a lawyer friend who is into equine law and we are in Florida. Let us know if you want us to go check on the horse and/or pick it up!

Ohhhh…yet another possible ending!

Actually, I think this is a great idea.

As the friend is not capable/willing to deal with this situation well, she needs to hand all dealings over to a representitive, and inform the ‘buyers’ immediately of the fact.

Thinking she’d have no shortage of competent volunteers.

If the horse were located, a bunch of COTHers could relay the horse home one county at a time. Wish this were going on in Broward County–I’d be all OVER the horse, barn, trainer, rider, father.

DITTO!

(father? huh?)

I have been quietly following this saga and have to say I am speechless.

If I weren’t pregnant, I’d march over there with a truck and trailer in tow and pick up the da** horse myself and BRING him back to Kentucky. Unfortunately I can’t get extremely angry/upset because I am pregnant and have to stay calm…

However if you do need someone to drive by this so called farm, and see if said horse is still there, I can. I am just north of Orlando, not too far from Winter Haven. The nerve of some people…makes me want to go over there and rip them a new one and the horse isn’t even mine.

I’ve been following this thread.

Man, I feel for you, epona! I know it’s not your horse, but I know how easy it is to get “invested” in your friend’s lives. But man, what a mess!

Your friend is about my age, and this whole time, I’m thinking, “I can understand being young and naive, I am too.” But, it has gone beyond young and naive, into stupid stupid stupid. I also understand what it’s like to be a poor college student (or just poor… LOL), so I do understand your friend’s need for money. Lord knows I’ve made some stupid decisions in hopes for a few extra bucks. But, hind sight is 20/20… And it seems your friend probably could have sold the horse 3 times over in the what - 6? weeks it’s been in FL.

I don’t want your friend to fall completely on her arse, and would help out if I could, if I were in the area. But, I hope she learns from this. I certainly have, and I’m not in the situation!

Kudos to you for not slapping her across the head. I think most of us would have. I’m sending well wishes to her and the horse, and I think you deserve a box of chocolates for having to both listen to your friend, and having to deal with us COTHers who need constant updates, and have crossed over from feeling bad, to being angry!

(by the way, I’m still anxiously waiting for another update!)

I always found my pregnancies to be a good source of stress relief. I was a royal b*tch, and could blame it on the hormones. Don’t cross a pregnant woman. I know a few people who got reamed out for doing things I normally would have ignored. Maybe I would have enjoyed my pregnancies a bit more if I could have stayed calm…
