Games Trainers Play: The Florida Horse Saga

UN…FREAKIN…BELIEVABLE… ANOTHER extension??? They couldn’t have done a ppe in OHHHH the 6 weeks he’s been there??? PPE should have been done off the truck… before anything was done to him riding etc… doing a PPE now could reflect the damage THEY have done to him…

Of course by PPE they may mean… “horse is now 3 legged lame… we don’t know why… and now it is our ticket out of sale…”

Doesn’t she have the right to pull the plug on the sale if she feels horse is in danger or doesn’t she have the right to change her mind about selling the horse??? I mean he is still HER horse right???

And pulling the shoes… who’s gonna put them back on? So when he get’s back he’ll be lame, sore, sour, with ouchie feet. When was the last time his feet were done before he left? Because they’ve had him 6 weeks and not touched his feet obviously so he could be 8-9 weeks between trims. I know my OTTB cannot go that long even in winter.

Epona I truly feel for you in this situation… you have handeled all the aggrivation directed at your friend through you very well indeed, I don’t think I could have done so well myself:winkgrin: You must be about ready to scream each time you hear an update yourself.

But thank you for feeding this Drama LLama:lol: If nothing else this thread is a lesson for all in what NOT to do for a horse sale.

Does Chanter/Chanter’s helper ring any bells…?

I don’t think the OP is bs-ing. I am going to guess her friend told her about this (2 months ago) & the OP in disbelief posted here on COTH & has only continued to update so COTHer’s could find out the outcome.

If I was the “friend”, I wouldn’t want my name or the horse’s exact location or the buyer’s name or trainer’s name put up on here. I would think that could become a legal nightmare. Could you imagine the witch hunt of people showing up in FL to “reclaim” the horse?? If “friend” has even be telling the OP the whole entire story?

Remember back in the start the OP mentioned this group of people have a habit of not always making great choices, but somehow bless their lucky stars it all manages to always work out for them in the end? I guess this time the luck ran out & reality is catching up fast.

The OP is merely the messenger here. It’s not her horse & she can’t make the seller do anything if the seller doesn’t want to.

Guys: The OP has entrusted certain people to assist in getting some answers and details and she has purposely not tried to get to many people involved. Some of us know the names, players etc and are working with the OP and her friend to get to the bottom of all this.

I think the OP has sent a couple of people PM’s containing more info but I can understand why she would be careful posting it on a public BB, lawsuits for slader, liabel(sp?) (I never can remember which is written and which is verbal:D) or the “buyers” finding out info or what not. So she may not be hiding something she is probably just protecting herself IMHO. Plus she is hearing this in phone conversations with her friend, she warned her friend came here searching for info to tell her friend and friend did not heed her warnings. I’m sure all of us have tried to talk someone out of doing something that we could see going bad from a mile away but until it happened to them it was no use. And she can tell friend that help is available but since she is not the owner she can’t send people out to get horse without friends OK no matter how bad she may want to.

Epona has kept us informed vented her own frustrations and taken our frustrated rantings about her friend very well. I can totally seeing something like this happening to someone who was too naive and trustworthy and desperate for money to see the bad that could come of the situation.

Let’s not start “killing the messenger” or else the messenger will not keep us posted and I for one want to know how this all turns out…

Glass half full girl here hoping for a miracle… for the horses sake:winkgrin:

I sent a nice OTTB on a two week trial to a NONTRADITIONAL EQUESTRIAN CENTER (therapy horse) - they were keeping daily logs on him - were supposed to make a decision on X - three days later when I finallly get them on the phone they waffle around and say well, we dont think he will stay sound. WHAT???
I said “Bring my horse back NOW.” And give me the “log” of what you have been doing with him. Turns out they totally ruined his feet - he was barefoot and they rode him ON GRAVEL - on day 3 he was “ouchy” and THEY KEPT RIDING HIM. The saintly horse passed every test on the obstacle course. He carried spastic kids, blind kids, everything. And they ruined his feet. He was down to NO TOE and abscessed.
So if you can’t trust a freaking therapy center with your horse you sure can’t trust a stranger. Never again any trial with any of my horses! come ride every day til you make up your mind. Prepurchase? Fine. AT MY FARM. And if I don’t think you are going to be a great owner? Horse no longer for sale. I am definitely not in it for the money!

I have a friend who might well have gotten herself into the situation that this horse owner did. Take naive and optimistic and mix it up with financial hardship and you get… well you get a lot of people who play the lottery, for one thing, but you also get people who get into situations like this. I totally believe the OP because I could just see it happening to me (starring in the role of the OP) and my friend (starring in the role of the horse owner).

Right now what everyone is suggesting (RIGHTLY SO!) would cost the friend money that she probably doesn’t have, kill a sale (that she probably also won’t have) and land her back with the horse (that she doesn’t want and can’t afford). She would be back to square one. For most of the time that this thread has covered, I thought the naivete and wishful thinking was relatively harmless – hey, it might turn out OK and who can really fault the owner for closing her eyes and crossing her fingers that it does? But now? Now I just don’t know. I don’t know if the horse is suffering, or if his training mishaps will be reversed, or reversible. But it sure is getting to the point where it will take more than just wishful thinking to get a decent outcome.

I’m often reminded of a line from the Wizard of Oz. When someone suggests that the Wizard might not see Dorothy and her friends, Dorothy says “But he MUST see us… we’ve come so far already!!” How far a situation has progressed really has no connection whatsoever to the outcome, but people think that way. The more time the owner invests in this situation, the LESS likely she will be to scrap it, which is a shame.
Not everyone’s parents would give a damn if their kid was in over his/her head.
If I remember reading correctly, the owner is 19…there has to be some adult in her life that can help her…We can’t blame her for getting in over her head…at 19 you can just about be talked into anything! But if, by the small chance, she doesn’t have an adult in her life to help her then she has plenty on this board that have been willing to help…it’s time for her to start asking for some help because, as we all can see, she is getting royally screwed and may never see her horse or money again if she doesn’t start being more proactive about things!!! I would have been threatening a law suit weeks ago if I was in this situation.

1 word to describe the OP’s friend: DESPERATE.

1 word to describe the OP’s friend: DESPERATE.
Exactly. And desperate times call for desperate measures.

Unfortunately, it didn’t pan out well for the OP’s friend.

I still have my fingers crossed, but the longer this goes on, the less hope I have.

Oh, sweet jesus people, I’m not making this up. I work 55+ hours a week and am taking 18 hours of graduate course work. I have WAY better things to do with my time. Ybiaw, onthebit and bugsynskeeter all know me personally and bugs knows the girl in quesiton as well.

Had you PMed me, like I told you to, I would have gladly given you names, addresses and phone numbers as I did the few people who did PM me. I’m not posting them in full view on this BB because I’m not a dumbass.

You’ll also notice I’m not the one who kept bumping this thread up. I responded when asked.

That said, you probably ought to stop reading if you think its a big joke.

Now, for those who aren’t accusing me of creating a publicity stunt…

Friend’s parents cut her off last year, when she contacted them about this situation, their helpful advice was “you probably shouldn’t have bought the horse in the first place.”

I talked to my friend this afternoon and she basically proclaimed “I’m sick of talking about it, i agreed to the extension, they’ll send me a check after he vets. If I didn’t agree they threatened to put him on the trailer and send him home.” When I asked why she didn’t just let them send him back, she said “because now hes screwed up and I don’t want him back.”

Yeah, shes dumb, nieve, doesn’t care about the horse, whatever. Thats her choice. She decided to stop reading this thread after page two because “it’s just a bunch of random people on the internet, what do they know…”

The reason I haven’t set COTH into action is because she doesn’t want me to. NOT my horse, NOT my decision. Donkeyman helped me IMMENSELY and even found someone who would go pick the horse up- friend refused.

Thats all I can do. JoZ, you hit the nail on the head.

Trainer wouldn’t tell my friend where the horse was showing this weekend, only that it was a 4-H show. If anyone feels like figuring it out and going to watch, have at.

I’ll update when I know more.

 1. NO, to the extension to the 18th.

 2. Unless full payment is paid via wire transfer on the 15th, the horse will be picked up on that day. (by a helpful COTH I am hoping)

 3. Any other arrangement made (hopefully none) will incur a fee for leasing the horse retroactive to January 1st.

The End.

Epona soo sorry you are caught in the middle of this mess… please keep us updated I am irritated at your friend as I’m sure you are and now with her attitude I’m pretty sure she will have the horse off her hands… she just won’t have money in her hands for the horse. Most of all I feel for the horse though.

I think it now sounds like Alcoholics Anonymous - you can’t help someone who doesn’t WANT to be helped. Epona, take your valuable time and spend it getting a massage, or doing laundry, or something - anything other than wasting it on this messed-up teenager.

Oh dear. That poor horse.

As to what a ‘bunch of people on the internet’ know, apparantly enough to predict every step of this whole sordid affair.

But I’m preaching to the choir.

The real ending…

Option A - They’ll get the horse for whatever they end up wanting to pay because she doesn’t want the horse back. They win.

Option B - They don’t want the horse now that they screwed it up and friend will then be begging the OP to help her place it as a rescue.

Either way… we were right. Woo hoo. What a victory. eye roll Hopefully the horse ends up somewhere half way decent. “Friend” will NOT buy another horse and create this type of situation for herself again anytime soon.

okay, seller doesn’t want help.Well she made her bed… Thinks we don’t know anything, but gosh, hmmm,we were right. At this point I don’t feel sorry for her.She has decided to take the screwing ,so I suppose she just learns the hard way.Sorry ,Epona ,that you went to some trouble to try to help her out. No offense, but you can’t fix stupid. We can stop offering advise now,and just sit back and wait for the final episode.

poor kid, you know why she said that becuase the poor kid cant admit she was in the wrong, its not easy to admit you made a bad choice or beleive in someone who has made you a bad choice its not she dont care about the horse as deep down she does it about what right in her kind-- look if you deperate and make decissons we all been there where we learn some hard ones and iam betting her parents pulled out and odnt support her becuase i bet she put herself in debt when she brought the horse thinking she could afford it and instead of spending money on books and stuff spent it on a horse-- so thats probably why parents dont want to know or say on your bike you brought this upon yoursel so you get yourself out of it

but - he has she knows that and she firmly belives shes got the deal of the life time iwth the that life line

she maynot want to listen to you – but you tell her this and get it into her head
she got to get the horse back no if or buts theres couplee ways left to play this scam if they have him which you last post said they invested this this and this in him

they have spent that so-- the horse is diganosed as lame – and they get him cheap
the horse is all of a sundded pts – and they get him for free

or – they have had for 6 weeks and she gets the costs of the vets which has been as spent money on her horse as she still legally own him so then has full baord and lodgings to pay for

some people scam- all sorts of ways and beleive me her trianer 1 is on it

and shes a mug as her bill has and will go up byxxxyz

they chnaged his name - his supplemnts- what for just for shows or what somehow your mates going end up with a huge bill somewhere plus no horse if she dont act now and get him back

I do indeed know epona IRL and she doesn’t make crap up. If you don’t like reading this stuff then stop. Personally I will admit I am addicted to the drama of it all. Sad I know . . .

I think JoZ hit the proverbial nail on the head. Epona’s friend is between a rock and a hard place, although I’m not saying it wasn’t self created. I feel bad for her and bad for the horse.

And of course nobody knows if the refusing story was true or not. I say “not,” he may be screwed up but I know, and the seller girl knows, that could simply be a lie and the horse is just dandy. But since she doesn’t want him, all buyer has to do now is say, oopsie, bad vet check, I’ll give you $500 for him or else send him back to you. Betcha she takes the $500.
