Games Trainers Play: The Florida Horse Saga

I see two shows this weekend, according to http://www.floridahorse.com/2008showdates.htm#h/j

Jan. 9-13 - Littlewood Farm/A-T Children’s Benefit, Wellington, FL www.littlewood.com
and
Jan.11 -13 - Jacksonville Kickoff, Clay County Ag Center (Green Cove Springs, FL),2463 State Road 16 West, Green Cove Springs, FL www.nfhja.com (904) 993-2053 Email: agamel@comcast.net

Clay County Ag Center - that could be misinterpreted as a 4H-y thing, now couldn’t it?

Edited top add - my goodness, that horse is a saint!

Anybody in real estate or the mortgage industry is going to be strapped for cash right now. I guarantee that trainer 1 mom and trainer 2 daughter knew this girl was desperate to sell. Real estate dad probably can’t afford the horse and is trying to get it as cheap as possible. So, they are triple-teaming her with a $$$ pay-off for everybody. Cheaper horse, commission for 2, etc.

He sounds like an a$$hat negotiator who needs to be put in his place.

Does anybody remember that trainer 1 sold OP’s friend the horse? I wonder how much money this mom and daughter team have made by selling and reselling this same horse. $$$

Epona, people have to make their own mistakes. I know you have tried really hard to help her.

Just a question or two to the OP and the Fla readers:

Florida COTHers:Having glanced at the photos, is there anyone from that area who would make the owner an offer on this guy and end this circus now?

OP: Is there any chance the owner would consider that? I’ve been following this thread and see some interest.

Sure, he needs some work (referencing January photos of #198), but he is lovely (looks honest too) and appears to have some natural talent despite his current rider. The spurs and kimberwicke are definately not needed from what I see-and I wish more people would consider the bit over fences as someone else here mentioned. I would say that with a competant rider he could be a fantastic h/j or maybe even low level eventing?

We’ve all learned from this and hopefully that includes the owner. Scarey stuff.

Just curious and sooooo hoping the horse gets a happy home out of this one way or the other.

Call me mean, but I hope the owner gets none or else very little money for the horse. She has done nothing but barge ahead with no thought except of herself (remember the beach house vacation she thought this could be?) & then is crying “poor me” despite the kind offerings of strangers to freely help her after all her stupid choices & now cares less what happens to the horse cause all she wants is money.

It sounds like the horse is being well cared for/treated if it indeed is the same horse donkeyman has found. I hope he gets to stay with people who will love & appreciate him rather than his current owner who doesn’t even want him back if this sale doesn’t happen. I secretly hope she never finds out that the horse is doing well & instead lives with the thought of him suffering & being neglected due to her dumb choices–not that it appears it would bother her much anyway.

OP you are a saint to have listened to all this from her.

Ditto! Assuming the horse in the pictures is the horse in question, he may be “plain”, but he looks like an absolute saint. Definitely looks like a horse I wouldn’t mind having (of course, I’m not in the market, OR in the area). And the video of him (from what I saw), he looks like a decent mover, with a good attitude. I like him. That, and I want this saga to end - for EVERYONE involved!

Ok, That’s it! I know you guys want the girl to learn her lesson here, but what about a lesson for the sleezy trainer?
To me, a great ending would be if there was a cother in Florida that would buy the horse from the girl right out from underneath the trainers nose!!!
Oh please:lol::lol: There has got to be somebody on COTH in Florida who could use a nice horse:lol::lol:

Yes! that would be absolutely the best ending … with getting the horse to someone who won’t pull on his mouth the most satisfying part of all.

I guess the part of this story that surprises me the most - if the horse is indeed 198 - is just how blatantly the FL trainer lied.
I talked to my friend this afternoon and she basically proclaimed “I’m sick of talking about it, i agreed to the extension, they’ll send me a check after he vets. If I didn’t agree they threatened to put him on the trailer and send him home.” When I asked why she didn’t just let them send him back, she said “because now hes screwed up and I don’t want him back.”

Donkeyman helped me IMMENSELY and even found someone who would go pick the horse up- friend refused.
Okay. At this point, I add my name to the list of those who no longer feel sorry for the horse’s owner. There was someone who was willing to go pick up the horse and she refused. She doesn’t know for sure that the horse is screwed up and she is ready to wash her hands of him. When the people “threatened” to put him on the trailer and send him home she should have jumped at the chance!! Now, she deserves whatever she gets. I don’t know that she has really learned anything from all this either, because she just rolled over and agreed to the extension and will probably agree if they try to drive the price down after the PPE. She is still letting them dick her around instead of getting angry and holding her ground for once.

Epona – Thanks for all your updates. I can’t imagine how frustrating this must be for you.

At the end of all this, I just hope the horse ends up in a good and loving home. :sigh:

Sorry if this has already been suggested, but,…

If the owner can reverse her recto-cranial inversion long enough, it would be neat to get a COTHer to nudge the process along a bit. Best if someone could show up at the trainer’s barn with a trailer, and a check, saying, "Oh, I just bought the horse. Didn’t the owner call you? She said you were having trouble with him, so decided to sell him to me and get him out of your hair, so you don’t have to deal with him any more. "

Want to bet money on how fast a wire transfer would go through? For more than the agreed-upon amount? :stuck_out_tongue:

Sorry, OP, I can see your part of it, now.

Ooh, ESG, that’s too clever. that would be a satisfying maneuver in this situation.

But who’s to say the trainer is sleazy? You are only getting the word of a seller who is clueless. Maybe not the most upright honest citizen, but really none of this is different from what I see trainers try to do/ask for on a regular basis (although not all in the same sales transaction). Difference is those seller use some brains & makes better choices. Don’t forget the “sleazy” trainer is trying to get the best deal & is looking out for their client. Maybe the seller should have hired somebody to watch over their interests?

Giddy-up, I would have to go back an re-read the whole saga to give you all the answers. But the most recent one that sticks out in my mind is telling the girl that the horse bucked at the show. Sounds like the horse did just fine.
Anyway, are “other trainers” our standard of behavior? Or is doing the right thing a better standard?

This on going saga is really showing the bad side of trainers. Perhaps this thread should have a sticky at the top of the forum with the heading of SELLERS BEWARE OF TRAINERS.

Come on, Let’s not turn that thread into a trainer bash …

It’s not the trainer’s fault if the owner didn’t make the right decisions.

I mean, when I go to buy a horse for my clients I always try to get them the best deal I can (I mean I’m respectful and I don’t do anything shady, but it’s what I’m paid for).

On the other hand, when I sell a horse for my clients, I’m the one who set the rules and make sure they don’t get taken for a ride.

As far as the ‘Seller’ in this story, she doesn’t seem to be willing to listen to the advice she was given, bad luck.

Many people on this board have been around the block and know what they are talking about.

Selling horses is not easy … And you need to be able to stand for yourself.

ESG–GREAT suggestion! Can we do that? I’d love to see a happy ending for the horse!!! He’s such a sweetiheart.

Haha, ESG, you are a genius!

I agree mademoiselle, it is the job of trainers to look out for their clients. But not to the point where they should lie, cheat and steal.
