Games Trainers Play: The Florida Horse Saga

Anyone else think this ought to be made into a Lifetime movie?

Did ANYone ELSE notice that the video was posted RIGHT after they got him AND they mention having him on dreamhorse??

I wish I had the money!! I would take him in a heartbeat!! I would LOVE to see the look on thier face if someone showed up with a trailer!!

“So sorry, I figured she would have called you!! with him bucking and all, I got a GREAT deal on him!!”

lalalalala!!

ROTFLMAO!!! Oh I LOVE it–that would just be too perfect!!! Just what they deserve too. HeeHEEEE!! Oh man-- please please, let us do this–LOL!

Oh this trainer has been allowed to take it to the extremes I agree. But only because the seller had no boundaries & didn’t deny any of the requests made by the buyer. What’s the harm in asking is maybe the motto this trainer goes by & seeing what the seller’s will allow. I just have a hard time feeling sorry for a person who has allowed themself to be taken along for the ride & then didn’t like how the ride ended.

And maybe the horse did buck. Who’s to say it did or didn’t? Again, the seller has positioned themself so they are pretty much at the mercy of the buyer now.

It will be interesting to hear how this all finally ends.

Where is the video? I missed the post. Thanks.

Any trainers down there with room for an extra horse to pick him up, refresher course in any holes in the training that would be willing to market him and split proceeds with seller? That would put the kibosh on the buyer pulling this girl’s chain and the seller wouldn’t totally lose her shirt and horse could end up in a good place. Just a thought.

I really think people need to stop spending time and energy on how to save this situation. The owner does not CARE nor does she sound at ALL grateful that complete strangers are willing to help her out. Too bad, so sad, horse stays in Florida for free with shady trainer and client.

Epona, you are a saint and a half. Seriously.

Oh, Giddy-up, we all know there are 2 likely endings:

 1. Buyer will do the PPE (or said they did the PPE), call and say we found this, this, and this wrong with him. The vet said he won’t be able to handle the higher jumps, and Precious really wants to get to that level (even if the pics say she really should stick with crossrails for awhile). He does have a great personality and Precious has become attached, but since we have to get her a different, and more expensive horse to do the higher levels, we can’t afford to spend very much on this one. Since we’ve already put $X in food, hay, and training, the PPE was $X, we’ll offer you 1/2 your asking price, minus the aforementioned expenses, so around $250.

 2. Buyer calls and says this, this, and this is wrong with the horse. He’s also started bucking and refusing. He’s a horrible horse, we won’t pay to ship hime back because you misrepresented him. Come and get him, or we start charging you board.

The owner has made a number of statements and decisions that are infuriating most of us, but perhaps she still trusts her mentor, Trainer 1, and is acting according to Trainer 1’s advice. Trainer 1 may have been orchestrating owner’s responses all along, and I don’t think we’ve read that owner is angry with Trainer 1 (just angry with Trainer 2 and the buyers, anger which Trainer 1 seems to have encouraged). Trainer 1 may be the one who has been advising the hapless owner to ignore the advice of others like her friend the OP, and to avoid seeking advice on COTH. Trainer 1 may still be telling owner not to “give in” to threats to have the horse sent home, and may be telling her to refuse the offer to have someone go and pick up the horse for her (reminding owner that she needs the money, and can’t afford to keep the horse, or pay Trainer 1’s fees to retrain him now that he has problems)… Trainer 1 may have been the one all along who has been advising her to give the buyers what they want if she wants to receive any money at all for the horse.

I picture owner as a kid who unwisely bought a horse (probably against parents’ advice, and again with Trainer 1’s help), and parents said that she must then learn to deal with the consequences herself. When owner found she was indeed over her head, she decided to prove that she could handle things on her own like an adult, and ended up trusting the wrong people (adults “in the business” as opposed to peers)…

The other person I feel sorry for is the girl buyer, loving horses and wanting to ride, and having slick salesman for a dad and Trainer 2 for trainer/advisor.

I just looked at the video on the utube/or whatever, and it says it has been posted for 3 months so it must have been done by the owner. Also copied some info from the site so this is not an ottb!! Here is the copy:

7 year old , 16hh, Dark Bay, never raced TB Gelding “Mr. T” is a joy to have around your barn! Great on the ground; loads, clips, bathes, ties, stands for vet and farrier, no vices, and has great feet. He has been schooling 2’9’’ - 3’ and been showing 2’6’’. Has been shown in Nashville, TN at CTHA shows. The last show was in June, where he was champion of his hunter division, along with two blues in equitation undersaddle and over fences. “Mr. T” has also been used for IHSA shows at Murray State University for the open and intermediate divisions. This guy truly has the classy hunter style and is ready to go to bigger and better shows. (Also see Dream Horse.com)

Frankly I do blame the trainer and I wish I could out her but I must refrain.

The trainer’s mother sold the owner the horse so they know what he is. They spoke many times so they knew the horse was coming along well.

It was the trainer, as I understood but I am not going back to re-read, who suggested this horse for HER client in Florida. The horse came to Florida because of the TRAINER and based on the trust this young girl had in the trainer that her horse would be well cared for and the deal handled properly.

The trainer made unreasonable requests. Moreover, the trainer has allowed the horse to show knowing it costs money for entries, trailering, and her own training fees but knows they don’t own the horse.

I think trainer should have said…hey - no showing this horse or taking it from the property unless and until you have purchased the horse.

Now, this I don’t think was discussed but I sure hope trainer is NOT getting a commission for selling and buying because then we have bigger problems.

In Florida there is no such thing as a postdated check so I for one would go cash the check. If it cleared great, if not it was a bad check punishable by law for three times the value of the check and criminal charges.

I think the owner should tell them a trainer is coming to pick up the horse to show to one of their clients since it is first come first serve.

ughhhhhhh

Now on the flip side, I think the owner is doing the bird in the hand theory that shortly she will have her money and at least she has not paid his expenses or Board for 2 mths which has probably saved her money. The horse looks like a survivor and she knows from pictures he is not bad off.

I think she needs to contact the show facility and see of a videographer was present and order the video

Got a call from my friend today-

Potential buyer called friend earlier, not the trainer… buyer offered to pay all shipping expenses and put my friend up for a few nights, take out an insurance policy, and pay a lease fee for a one month trial- and pay all shipping expenses to send the horse home if he doesn’t work. My friend suggested a commercial shipper, but buyer would prefer her to haul so she can see the barn, make sure the horse settles in, and perhaps give the daughter a lesson or two.

She’s still deciding whether to insist on commercial shipper. I also told her she should get a bit of extra money for staying a few days to help the girl, and make sure she takes her time getting there and back- make him pay for a hotel each way.

She’s not doing ANYTHING without a check in hand and insurance policy in place.

She can’t haul the horse until the weekend after Thanksgiving, but buyers would like him “the sooner the better!”

Oh, and price has been suitably raised and trainer will tack commission on top of that.

Ug. Where’s my eye rolling icon?
according to this yes trainer is planning on getting a commission… Price was raised to cover but now buyers are lowballing her again and trying for price reductions. I don’t know if it is one or both trainers getting commission but holy heck batman!!

Oh Guin, at this point it really is not about saving the girl. We got over her three pages ago when most of us agreed she can’t, or isn’t worthy, or something, of being saved.
Now we are working on how to stick it to that trainer:lol::lol::wink:

and to make sure horse lands in a good place…

(I haven’t lost all sympathy for the seller, but I have run out of patience.)

Well I still have sympathy for the young owner, after all her trainer has taken advantage of her, and at her age with this probably being her first horse, she just didn’t have any experience. Besides she probably never dreamed that people could be so dishonest with her. You know how the sly ones work while patting you on the back and stealing your wallet!!

Of course I have concern for the lovely horse and wonder what will happen to him, wish I could take him, FWIW!!

Agreed the owner is learning this lesson the hard way. Why can’t people listen to good advice?! I’m sure she really did believe that the trainers had her best intrests in mind and that this would be ‘easy money’. It sounded good back then…

ESG had a great suggestion. Or rather, it would be great - if the owner actually wanted the horse back. As it is, I bet she ends up taking what they offer (after another ‘terrible’ show and a poor vetting). You can be sure it’ll be a good bit less than she could have sold him for at home :sigh:

I don’t think it is her first horse…I pretty sure I remember seeing a post from the OP now buried somewhere in the prior 36 pages of this thread about how she and her friend had been successful in the past at finding/training/showing/selling horses. I started to look for it yesterday, but gave up after re-reading 7-8 pages of our “yelling” DON’T DO IT!

ETA … I was mistaken … I found the post #291 … it was OP and other friends who had flipped horses successfully … not the current seller.

A different friend and I bought horses every summer in Western KY and I hauled them home with me to Chicago. I always managed to find someone willing to lend me their pasture for the summer if I would just feed and water their horses for them and I managed to turn horses over and make giant profits every year. I never had a horse fail a vet check, they always sold JUST in the nick of time before I was going to have to haul them back down to KY with me and I never had to put a shoe, vaccine or do vet work on any of them. I know now that this was pure luck, not neccessarily skill, but it sure worked to get my butt through college!

Similarly, one of my friends was selling her OTTB- she’d had at least four trainers tell her that “this horse could be your rolex horse” but she just didn’t have the time or money for him. She rode what was to be one of her last clinics with him, and the clinician came up afterward and offered to lease the horse for his working student, who would keep him for the next few months and then return him to her. It gave her enough time to get settled and on her feet and she got a fantasically trained horse back.

These are just a FEW of the situations I can think of off hand, so I think my friend is just figuring it’ll all work out…

Well said Rainyday.
I learned a long time ago that you can’t help people who don’t want to be helped:eek:
The whole thing is sad really. But at some point, you either laugh, or cry:(

Are you nuts? Flat work, flat work, flat work, and on the longe line at that.
