I believe it is arena 5? And there are images of the stadium sans name being circulated on FB.
I don’t really expect Tryon to make any statements given the current climate, but very glad that they appear to have removed the name.
I wrote a letter to the editor of COTH about a year ago and included screenshots of Vineyridge’s most appalling posts (up to that point). I said I was concerned that a poster was allowed to make such comments and consequently make others uncomfortable to the point that they left the forums. As Sswor points out, VR’s comments have been reported for years and the moderators do nothing.
I wrote my letter as an editor to an editor because, in our editorial positions, we are not only responsible for our journals but also all the multimedia that complements them, including discussion forums.
The editor’s response was basically, “We know, and we are not going to do anything.”
What a sad and disappointing reply to this type of situation. And here we are again, with VR’s comments now going viral on Twitter because they are so appalling.
Not a good look for COTH in times where people are tired of these views being perpetuated because those who can do something about it would rather protect the “rights” of one person being offensive and vicious than support the majority who are saying, “No, this is wrong!”
Of course, now COTH will likely close or delete this thread, probably ban me, and leave VR to continue posting this awful stuff. I’m only partly kidding.
While I don’t want to give airspace to this person, nor sidetrack this thread further… haven’t people been banned for less? While I might see value in keeping enemies close, and I do see value in spirited debate, I don’t see the value in letting one’s vitriol be spewed unfettered. Especially not when one’s vitriol is driving away other members.
What I have seen here with regards to this person is just blatant nastiness and an attempt to justify disgusting beliefs with pseudo-academic drivel. I hope that if the mods won’t step up, then the rest of this community just ignores this poster to the point that they stop posting. Let’s not feed the troll.
ETA: Yes, I believe that part of this is just not acknowledging them by name. Let’s ignore.
Well, I’m obviously blind as a bat! LOL
It’s still on the materials as GM Arena. I guess I need new glasses… or I should enlarge PDFs.
Anything new from within the ISWG group? It seems to be public silence now from many of the big names who at first were so vocal in their support of George and outrage over SafeSport.
Wait a sec. Is this right?
@MapleinMay creates an anonymous account here and posts under that user name. Then, under her real name, posts an out-of-bounds ugly post from this very long thread to show the rest of the world how shitty COTH is… and now claims that the anonymous posters here have created a safety problem for her?
I don’t get it. It seems to me that MapleinMay could have participated more fully in maintaining her own safety. That link and the post on COTH explaining her position are the only two things than connect the two identities. Or you could have left COTH’s dirty laundry alone.
If you go to the website and look at anything but the PDF, it is not the GHM Arena. At least from what I have seen.
ETA:
For example, go to: ShowGroundsLive > Orders of Go/SignUps.
I think that we should go a bit easy on people who are survivors and not expect them to have “normal” reactions to things. I also found the narrative confusing but also respect his or her privacy and can allow that their experience isn’t making for rational decisions right now.
Did you read the post and the public comments?
I just don’t understand what is to be gained by throwing the next guy under the bus. And I don’t want to be that guy. I don’t deserve that. Neither do all of the many, many people who have spoken up here, and IRL for SafeSport and for survivors. If you want to check my credentials, search my posts on this thread. I think vineyridge’s one post was chosen and presented as an example of how we roll and criticized.
Oh there are still plenty of I STAND WITH GEORGE!!!11! who are just dying to open their mouths while he throws dirt at them. But most of them are clueless.
“This whole thing with Morris ties into the witch hunt that MeToo has become. I’m all for empowering women to speak out against sexual abuse but a few bad apples and this whole believe women without evidence thing has gotten out of hand. Poor guy”.
“WOW, you know it. Your insight is impressive.”
In case anyone was wondering the WOW comment was not sarcasm.
Nobody can read any of it because it is now deleted or private. I am not saying that the reaction was not extreme… I am saying we should have empathy for this survivor. Maybe they overreacted, who cares. They obviously regretted their decision. This person has (IRL) gone through a lot. I think we can be kind to them.
Speaking of George Morris, there is an interesting opinion piece in the Spectator US entitled “Back to the drawing board for gay media’s pederasty pushers” by a very out gay man who has been internet mobbed for saying something that doesn’t agree with current doctrine. It’s worth reading.
https://spectator.us/back-drawing-bo…rasty-pushers/
He’s a former editor at large of The Advocate, and has become the conservatives’ favorite gay person.
Of course we can be kind. I tried to be kind by telling this person that if she is terrified of her abuser and is frightened that he may discover her whereabouts by looking at social media, that it would behoove her not to be posting all over social media in a public manner and drawing attention to her twitter account by quoting posts from a public, widely read horse forum.
I totally agree with you but I don’t think anyone has shown a lack of empathy. This thread has well over 2,000 posts. Why that one was chosen to represent the BB is beyond me. I don’t blame posters here for questioning it. Questioning it doesn’t mean they lack empathy. Especially without knowing the back story.
I wish the poster all the best. Writing things out is cathartic and writing things out on social media will help everyone who reads it that maybe going through the same or similar.
You did nothing wrong. Sharing from a public Twitter account when someone screencaps and shares one of our worst posts isn’t wrong.
You could even leave it at sharing from a public Twitter account isn’t wrong. that’s literally all Twitter is, retweeting.
Twitter is also much, much more widely utilized than coth, so if you’re concerned about being identified, coth is actually the safer choice, especially when you seemingly aren’t even a horse person.
But whatever, the moment has passed.
This is what I don’t get. She took a screen shot of a public post on COTH, shared it on her public Twitter page as evidence that horse people supported child molesters, then came here demanding that we remove the post from our forum. Personal trauma or not, both COTH and her Twitter page were open to the public and it was expected that it would link back.
For the record, I have a screen cap of her tweet, and there’s no evidence there linking who she was. I just don’t think it’s fair to demand we remove a Twitter post, Twitter is a massive public platform and if it’s on the internet it’s there for life.
Yeh I’ma little baffled by that whole exchange as well. Maybe she just decided she shouldn’t have shared it? Trying to be empathetic here.
We try to give users as much leeway in discussing topics, even when their opinions or contemplations are unpopular or potentially even offensive, but we’re not extending a platform to someone continually attempting to defend the practices of sex with minors and slavery. Apologies that it took so long.
