Gloves + Rain = Slippage

Dealt with the elements yesterday at a show. Yay for rain! We badly need it, but, I experienced the joys of slippy reins. Which unfortunately I spent most of the course scrambling to keep my contact from slipping.

I come to COTH looking for what are the best gloves for this kind of weather. I opted for no gloves as I had great grip in show jump without them. I had contact issues with gloves on in dressage. I didn’t know what would’ve been worse for cross country. Clearly I think I would’ve had slippage either way.

I use Nunn Finer soft grip reins, which are usually super grippy.

What gloves does everyone use?

I have the leather gloves with crochet back for summer currently and fleece in/smooth out gel gripper “glove liners” for skiers for winter. Anything with gel tends to be grippy.

The leather would be nasty in the rain.

I went gloveless…my gloves were SOAKED. I used some of the nunn finer grippy spray…helped a little. Im not sure anything could have helped in that rain!!

Mine were disgusting after dressage, so I opted no gloves, but brought my back up to show jump just in case. Then opted no gloves for cross because they felt more slippy in dressage.

My one friend recommended sticky spray. Never thought of that.

I’ve heard those reins are awful when wet. Maybe consider different reins for wet weather.

For show gloves in wet weather I use SSG Digitals. Very happy with them.

I like the rubber web reins with the stops for when it’s wet.

Yeah I was in webbed reins…they were slippery but not bad, thats exactly why I don’t use rubber…always too slippery for me.

Macwet golf gloves! Amazing grip!

I am old school and love the Neumann tackified gloves for jumping. They are super sticky!

Reportedly (haven’t had a chance to try them yet), regular cotton gloves + rubber reins work. Anything with a leather palm (e.g., leather/crochet summer gloves) turn slick as snot.

Mac wets - just tried a pair and bought another. $$ but worth it!

Another vote for Neuman tackified. Also they are washable, and last forever.

Reading about the Macwet, they sound perfect! Only issue with being in Canada, is trying to buy anything and not get destroyed by the exchange rate.

I bought mine on eBay.

They are! I like the rubberized web reins with stops. You can get them cheap–Shires and other budget brands make them.

I tried to order some of these and found out that Neumann doesn’t make them anymore!! I scored some in white and they are amazing, but they get gross looking pretty fast.

For this round last week… https://youtu.be/89z1ZoxeMOI

I wore Heritage Crochet back leather gloves and rubber reins. I do like the Heritage Crochets because they have a velcro closure that helps keep the glove in place and fitted.

I haven’t gotten caught in heavy rain with this combination, but my old guy was a very heavy sweater (and I don’t mean Fair Isle!) and reins were always wet: SSG Digital gloves with Nunn Finer fine-pebble rubber reins.

I have also used sticky spray for my gloves on hot or rainy rides to some success.

I had this happen last year when I was schooling and it was such a nightmare (pouring rain + SSG gloves + Nunn Finer rubber reins were like being in ballet slippers on ice!). I did a lot of research on reins and gloves. I kept my Nunn Finer rubber reins and switched to either Neumann’s tackified (I had no idea they stopped making them) or MacWet. The latter are my faves- very thin and light. I always jump in one of these two gloves as they are so comfortable and grippy. I ordered my MacWet from the UK.

This is exactly my combination at the moment. I’ve been checking ebay for the macwet gloves but with the canadian exchange, it’s rather expensive. They sound like the most ideal glove.
