Good Equine Medical Facilities

I’m stealing this idea from another forum. They did a list of all the medical facilities, all over the country, that their members have found to give excellent treatment and care. That way, if their members ever found their horses in need of care, either in their own vicinity, or even if they were travelling, they would have this list available.

I’ll start:

Ledgewood Equine Medical Center
Ontario, NY

Granted, I have boarded at the stable associated with this facility for years, but I was reminded again, with the Promise thing, just how well these people care for the animals that come in for treatment. There is a board-certified vet, and a board-certified surgeon available. The vet techs are knowledgeable, and competent. I never have run into anyone who was not willing to stop and talk to me about my horse’s condition.

Anybody else got any medical facilities that they would recommend?

The hospital at the vet school in Guelph, Ontario is very professional and seems nice. We toured there last year and it is huge! We even got to see a horse on a treadmill!

Ohio State has always done a good job on the horses I’ve had there, but I’m a little nervous about handing over one of my darlings to the students. One of my geldings took a Dairy Princess skidding across the parking lot when she decided he didn’t need a shank…UH - try listening to the owner hun

I also just had a good experience at Aurora Equine Specialty Hospital. Dr. William Jackson is my hero I took a two month old foal who was seriously colicing there, as I didn’t think he would live through the three hour ride to OSU. He had a colic surgery that removed 25 feet of small intestine and he is doing FANTASTIC He only had a 25% chance of survival, but he has been home for about six weeks now and is back in routine care. YEAH!!!

But, I suppose we should be glad that we don’t know that many doctors

Don’t have the address, but I would highly recommend New Bolton Center, which is in Kennett Square Pennsylvania. It’s the large animal hospital of the University of Pennsylvania’s veterinary school.

Concur completey with Everything but Wings, Marion DuPont Scott saved my baby Shawn, who spent the first week of his life in their neo-natal unit with a life threatening infection. Firendly, kind, explained everything, and not only let me be involved in his care, but when I could sit with him and do his meds and turn him, etc. they took money off his bill.

Also, when I lived out West had equally positive expereince with Alamo Pintada.

I sent a horse to Marion Dupont and the experience was as wonderful as could have been for him at the time. They did they’re best by my baby, and met me each day I visited to dicuss his care.

South of Kansas City in Bucyrus, Kansas (15 minutes south of Interstate 435)there is Red Oak Animal Hospital which has three excellent vets. These vets do extremely good work and will refer you into Kansas State Vet School (Manhattan, Ks.) or U. Of Missouri (Columbia) if the condition is such that they feel additional test/treatments are best provided from those teaching sites.

Only have had 1 dealing with them personally, but the facility is top notch and IME the care is great.

Yes, I agree that Ledgewood Equine Medical Center is a great place. I went to the grand opening and D.T. showed me and a fellow horse nut around. Showed us the surgical area and all his new toys. Probably saw your horses as we snuck in to the boarder barn area…we had to check it out . You know us horse people.

I have done one long road trip in the middle of the night to Cornell for colic and do not want that again-not my horse . D.T. is great explaining thing to those of us still learning. (I called him D.T. as I do not know if we could use names.)

THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY…sorry but that is how they teach up to say it at freshman orientation. . Ok these people are my full time vets and the are wonderful!!

I also have used Rudde and Riddle sp? in Lexington by the horse park!

Court!! and Momo feels the same way.

I think that is the name, commonly known around here as Morven Park (on the grounds of that lovely, historic estate)

My only experience was taking our Wings there as a yearling for planned surgery to remove a retained testicle. The staff at the center was wonderful to us, the barns huge and airy, Wings thought he was in heaven. When we “checked out” I thanked them for taking such good care of our colt and we were told “Thank YOU for bringing us such a good boy!”

My son and I towed him there with our RV and we were allowed to stay there, parked in an out of the way area near the Capitol Productions office, for the three days he was at Morven Park. So much nicer than driving 1 1/2 hours twice per day and we were able to watch the procedure from a comfortable observation room.

I don’t know how I would feel if our situation had been in an emergency but there were no complications and our three day stay plus surgery amounted to @ $800.

There are some more in PA. One is Delaware Equine and the other is Midge Leitch’s facility. Both have the capacity to do a varity of surgeries and such. Both have catered to the Olympic team horses. Midge has traveled with the team to the last 5 Olympics as the head Vet. While smaller than Morven and New Bolton, they are just as good and less expensive.

Sorry to say the only way I found this out was way as due to a poor experience at one of my local big name center. So whenever there is a serious problem, I haul up to Midge’s.

It’s Rood and Riddle. I know 'cause I wrote them alot of checks. One of several outstanding clinics in Lexington.

I’ve had nothing but wonderful experiences with this hospital. Even when the outcomes are less than wonderful, the vets are great, very caring and helpful.

I just had my very promising 5 year old QH there last week, for a possible EPM test. I will write the outcome of that story in another thread but the result is my boy is now retired from any kind of work or competition

But in spite of the news, I have nothing but the highest regard for the vets there. I’ve used them for over 20 years and they are always up front, honest and VERY capable in all situations.

University of California at Davis…Dr. Jack Snyder is terrific!!! His work with show horses is world-renowned and I highly highly reccomend him.

In the central Virginia area it has to be Blue Ridge Equine. State of the art and friendly. My friend’s had to ship their daughter’s horse there on an emergency basis late one Sunday. Unfortunately the horse didn’t make it but they were so well informed and cared for those two days that when the decision had to be made they were comfortable that they had done everything and they were making the right decision.

That’s bad news Odin…I’m so
sorry!

A friend of mine took her horse up to the track vet, sorry don’t recall his name, to be scoped.

She was very pleased with the facility and expertise as well as the much smaller bill!
