Good Guinness Missing

There was an update later on HSS from Kristin:

bit of good news…The ‘wrong’ horse has a European micro chip, and they found a faint Holsteiner brand with the numbers 74…so at least shortly we should know how he is bred, at least…

I have one with a brand that can only be seen in certain light and not all year. Some brands really are nearly invisible.

Makes me think that in the future people might ask shippers to send them digital photos of their horse being delivered at the end of the trip. Would be easy to do with a cell phone camera.
My horse is on her way from Chicago to Virginia as we speak and the shipper sent me a picture from his cell phone of her loaded on his truck this morning. When the same shipper took my other horse out to VA awhile back he sent me a picture of him in his stall at the barn where he got dropped off. It’s great - all the shippers should do that.

It would only take about a minute - bet it doesn’t happen very often. It’s funny that for a $10 box you can get a delivery confirmation and see the person’s signature who signed for it, but a $100k+ horse travelling across the country is delivered and people just go on faith that it is the right one?

Don’t dismiss microchipping

Penn State ran a microchipping study with a bunch of 4-H horses – From what I understand, all the 4-H kids in 10 counties had their horses chipped – They scanned the horses at the 4-H shows – http://www.das.psu.edu/4-h/horses/penn-state-equine-identification-project/

If USEF did something similar, GG might have been found before anyone noticed he was missing –

I’m sure this would also translate to some sort of fee for checking microchips at every show, and I would be among many who would groan about another fee –

I talked to the director of the study when the study was underway – She had doubts about the value of mandating microchipping in horses – You can’t expect it to really be used to track the whereabouts of every horse – Horses don’t move around like food animals – They move for short periods of time, alone or in small groups – So, it would be unreasonable to expect microchipping to successfully track the exposure of horses to diseases –

But, it does seem to me that it would be helpful in a case like this with misidentified horses – It might also discourage the renaming of horses to ‘regain’ green status (although I’m sure there are people out there who would remove an old microchip for monetary gain) –

That is so funny!

some brands are really hard to see…
True. My horse’s brand is very faint and hard to see unless he is summer slick. No way I can find it now, even if I am looking for it!

Guinness is now in Patrick’s custody (so to speak)! We learned from an internet tip that the horse was in New Jersey so my daughter drove over from school there, confirmed the horse’s identity to the police and insurance co, and is now waiting with GG for a ride to a safe haven. She won’t leave his side until his jammies are on and he’s tucked in for the night. She said he looks fantastic and all are much relieved. What a nice outcome. Thanks to all. When this thread was taken down, I wrote to the moderator with great dismay because I thought that with enough info, pics, descriptions, etc., someone was bound to figure this out–Guinness does not hide his light under a bushel. It’s so great that so many people, on so many boards and threads, pulled together.

My advice, and what I did when I had two horses shipped from Europe…

WHEN SHIPPING A HORSE Professionally for long distance,

BRAID a yellow soft rubber cattle tag ( u can buy them at Tractor supply- all the big breeding farms use them) into BOTH the mane AND tail of the horse you are shipping with the Horse’s name written in sharpie AND Your phone number ( in case there is a problem/accident.

this would lessen the chance of a horse getting switched up by a busy, tired driver.

Why would they take this thread down? If not for the various boards he would not have been found so quickly. Isn’t that the point of the internet!!! (not finding horses, but sharing info quickly)

Wow! How did everything fall into place? Or out of place and then back into place?

You have to go back to about page 7 to find out.

Wow…glad this had a positive outcome for GG. (And, hopefully for Con Air.) There’s just so much egg on so many human faces…

Seb

This story reminds me of “The Prince and The Pauper” retold with horse characters.

What about the girl who’s been riding GG as “her” horse for the past seven months? Kinda sucks for her.

Yup. Totally agree.

It does indeed.

Very amateur photo comparison, GG on left, Kanye on right.

What an amazing coincidence!!
Wow amazing resemblance, I am not into jumpers but I noticed the ears…anyone else notice the ears back - sorry if not expressing myself correctly, but the expression on the horse’s faces are so close.

NOT saying that it is the same horse, but it sure does make me pause and say: “what?”

I hope that the GG is found safe and sound, and maybe even if he is someones pasture pet and has done nothing but eat and grow fat…that is he is ok. I would be out of my mind with worry if any horse of mine wasn’t where it was supposed to be, doing what it was supposed to do, with the people that were supposed to have said horse.

Amazing resemblance…that is all I can say.

glad GG has been identified and found, now poor Kayne/Con Air…wonder where he is supposed to be and who is missing him?

The horse has been found. Check back a page or two.
