Goodbye Tailored Sportsmans, Hello...?

For years I’ve shown in nothing but Tailored Sportmans based on trainer’s recommendations. However, they just don’t seem to fit me correctly. Every time I put them on I wish I could wear my schooling breeches instead

I own 2 pairs of the low rise Supreme?(will check) Hunters with a side zip. I’m tall with long, thin legs and I wouldn’t consider these figure flattering by any stretch of the imagination. Even for longs only dry cleaned between shows, the velcro hits my legs at an awkward spot causing some mild discomfort under my boots. As well, the low rise may be an improvement to older models, but the waist band is still past my navel and overall the fabric just appears baggy from any direction between the waist and thighs.

It’s not a matter of sizing (trust me, I’ve tried many). They just don’t fit me.

What other brands are popular in the ring right now and might offer me a better fit?

I don’t know what your price range is, but I like the Ariat Olympia as far as high-quality flattering breeches go. They’re a few bucks more than the Trophy Hunters, but same ballpark.

I also just posted asking about the Smartpak Alexus, so we’ll see what people have to say about that!

The trophy Hunter by tailored sportsman have a much more modern fit and fabric than the supreme Hunter that you wear. I would try a pair of those before you write tailored sportsman off completely.

I have a pair of tredsteps (the $120 version) in tan that I now show in. They are very comfortable and flattering IMO. They have the elastic sock bottom, so no issues with the velcro leaving marks or being painful. My favorite part though is that these breeches are practically stain resistant. I can spill someone on them and it won’t stick, or lightly wipe away with a damp cloth, and the stain is gone in a few minutes. I often get a little messy before I go in the ring and these breeches are a lifesaver for that!

Oh - I didn’t read thoroughly! Yeah, try the Trophy Hunters before you swear off. I have two of the Professional, too, and I’m not planning on wearing them again. I much prefer the Trophy Hunter. Very nice, flattering cut, and much better material than the Professionals.

Do they still make the Professional? Mine are a number of years old…

ETA: Okay, apparently I STILL can’t read. You said the Supreme Hunters. Are those still the 2-way stretch? Regardless - if you haven’t tried the Trophy Hunters yet, do that next.

I like the Piper’s from smartpak- I have long legs and have the same issue with where the velcro hits me mid calf- Piper’s are nice and long!!

Also, really like my Pikeur Ciara’s. SO comfy. I bought all of mine from Amira-Equi, much cheaper than from a US retailer.

Another vote for the Tredstep Rosa Breech! I was at a Dover store and tried them on side by side to TS. I think I tried the Trophy Hunters, but I may have tried a pair of the Supreme too. The Tredstep Breeches fit me WAY better. The quality of the fabric was the same as TS too, the selling point for me though was the cuff bottom, I can’t stand the velcro on the TS, (plus they were slightly cheaper, and as aforesaid fit way better).

If you haven’t tried the Trophy Hunters, I would suggest those. SO MUCH more comfortable - nice wide waistband, stretchy fabric. I like the construction of the Ciaras, but I am a bit wider in the hip, and the way they are cut makes the waist band dig into my hip bone. My straight up and down trainer does not have this issue.

Another vote for the Tredstep Rosa Breech! [/QUOTE]

How is the rise on these? I’m long through the waist and anything too short I have trouble tucking in my shirt, but I’m looking at getting a pair of two of new show breeches for next year. I’ve been considering these, and am happy to see people like them, but the rise looks low from the photos.

Not sure about the Rosa but I have the Neros (the $80 version) and the rise is LOW. Like, say hello to my buttcrack low.

I don’t think you can buy the old style Supreme Hunters anymore. Definitely try the Trophy Hunters. I think Dover & SmartPak only stock 2 versions: the Professional/show quality and the TS/schooling quality.

Agree about the Trophy Hunters and I will add another vote for the Ariat Olympia breeches if you can find them.

I am a huge fan of Pikeur Ciaras but I am a curvier build so not sure if they would work equally well for you.

I’m also long waisted, and I absolutely HATE low rise breeches. I find the Tredstep Rosa breeches acceptable. The rise is slightly lower than my Tailored Sportsman Trophy Hunters, but I don’t feel like they’re falling down and I can tuck my shirt in. I own three pairs.

I actually love the old Royal and Supreme Hunter low-rises (the regular rise came up to my bra, though). So if anyone has any 32’s kicking around…

I like the SmartPak Piper show breeches. They offer both front and side zip, I think (though I buy side). Great value for the price, and a contemporary fabric and look.

Another vote for SmartPak Pipers. I’m a recent convert and I love them. Great, forgiving fabric, nice fit, easy on the wallet.

I would recommend the trophy hunters in a MID RISE. I’m 6’ tall and with the trophy hunter in long and mid rise, I’m covered at both ends. There is neither butt-crack visibility risk or velcro at calf irritation. I remember that happening with the older version of TS’s though, I think the long version of the trophies is really quite long.

I have another vote for the Tredstep Symphony Rosas. They’re my favorite show breeches, with my Ariat Olympias in a close second. I like them both better than my TS breeches (including Trophy Hunters).

This is great advice everyone, thank you!

Maybe I should just order a few from those suggested and see what works–that’s the best way to know

Seconding the mid rise long Tailored Sportsman Trophy Hunter. We get the side zip too

Another vote for Trophy Hunters. Those are the TS pants you see everywhere.
