Grain-free fed dog smells like fritos

My prior dogs’ paw pads have always smelled like corn Fritos. At the time I did not know about dog foods and dog nutrition.

I now know the errors of my ways in the past and I feed my current 1.5 yr dog a grain-free food, and his paws smell like Fritos.

Does he smell like corn because of the animal proteins in the food? I feed ToTW purple bag or yellow bag (lamb and Buffalo, not the chicken one)

Do your dog’s feet smell? And I am asking mainly the Grain-Free feeders, but anyone can chime in the more ideas and opinions the better.

TIA

All dogs’ feet smell like this. We used to call them Tosti-toes. I used to frequent a forum where we established a club the SSDFS -The Secret Society of Dog Foot Sniffers  Because that smell is just so wonderfully engaging that some of us just smell our dogs’ feet for kicks

For those who are reading this with big eyes -go sniff your dog’s feet!

Paula (Long time member of SSDFS).

LOL ! This is how my friend’s dog got his name - Frito !

You’ll be happy to know as my dog was casually walking by, I stopped him, picked up his foot and sniffed. He is now confused, and opted to sleep off his turmoil under the bed.

Thank you, COTH, for always teaching me something new.

Yeah, I tried it too, but while my dog was lying down, so she didn’t seem to think it was weird that I was smelling her feet.

Tessa’s feet did NOT smell like fritos, though. They actually smelled pretty much like the rest of her, like dog hair. Of course, this could be because she has really hairy feet. Maybe the dog hair smell overpowers the frito smell if they have really hairy toes?

Yup, Frito-Feet are intoxicating.

Thanks dude. It’s a great post![/QUOTE]

We know, “dude”! Your post, on the other hand, has been reported as spam and no one on this board is dumb enough to click the link in your sig.

I’ve been feeding Taste of the Wild for about a year and haven’t noticed a “Frito” like smell, but maybe I just haven’t been smelling my dog’s feet!

I have notice two things however- 1) My dog’s constant ear infections have stopped. He has had them his entire life (10 years). He was on Royal Canin before which did not seem to make a difference. 2) He has had occasional lameness issues in the past- nothing huge, just a day or two once in a while after he seems to have done too much- but has not had a sore day in a looong time!

Dog feet just smell like taco-shells (or fritos!) It’s one of the very very endearing things about pups. Taco feet!

We call them “popcorn paws” or “frito feet!”

I don’t think it’s horribly unpleasant, but my mother sure did. I actually convinced my very gullible mother to sniff my dog’s paws when I first got him. There she was… down on the ground on her hands and knees, sniffing my dog’s feet until a look of horrified disgust came over her face. She said she couldn’t get the smell out of her nose for hours.

I innocently suggested she sniff some coffee beans to neutralize the smell (which works, by the way), but after my first round of smelling suggestions, she was disinclined to believe me.

It makes me laugh even now!

dont get me wrong, I love the smell of my pup’s feet. My friend smelled them and said its because of the corn in his diet…I looked at her like she had 3 heads, I feed grain- free thank you very much…lol

I was just curious if every pup had frito feet !

Interesting. When my dog had really smelly feet, vet said to put malacetic acid on them (sold as an ear cleaner, mild antifungal and antibiotic). They are still stinky feet, but much better now!

They can get yeast infections in the pads of their feet. No more frito feet for us!

I think it’s just the pheromones. Dog pads have scent glands so we find the scent endearing.

Yup; I just smelled Yoshi’s feet. BTW his head smells fruity to me. He’s always had fruity head.

Paula

I can’t believe I’m going to go smell my dogs’ feet…

This thread made me laugh so hard!

I feed TOTW too and have noticed my dog smells like a corn chip! I thought it was just her…she earned the nickname “Corn Chip” because of it. Never realized it came from her feet though. I guess I can admit I kinda like it…lol

of the 300 people that has viewed this thread, I wonder how many smelled their dog’s feet after that?

I am glad to learn that it is just not my dog that has frito feet.

I have ALWAYS said my dog’s feet smell like Fritos, and have been met with odd stares. So happy that I am not alone! I have actually smelled my cat’s feet too, but they don’t have such a distinct smell.

That’s nothing. Who checked their cat?

(The cat was not amused. And did not smell like Fritos.)

Dogs’ feet smell like corn chips because of the yeast that grows in and between their pads. If it gets overpowering, it might mean infection, but a slight smell is normal.

Reference: parents are small animal vets, clients ask this a lot.

TG! for this thread!
I haven’t had a dog for over 20 years, but when I had my big ol’ lab-mix you can bet his feet smelled like fritos

Soooo glad to know it wasn’t just me.

Hmmm…
Do you you think Frito-Lay made their corn chips smell like…
but no, that wouldn’t make sense…
or would it?

BTW:
Did anyone else hear of the death of the man who invented Doritos this week?
His family sprinkled the chips into his grave.
