Gribaldi semen now 5,000 euro!

As if an attempt to jump on the bandwagon and profit from the success of Totilas, Joop van Uytert has decided to ask a staggering stud fee for the frozen semen of his late Trakehner stallion Gribaldi, sire of Totilas. Last year the price was 1,800 euro for frozen semen, but for 2011 the Dutch businessman is charging 1,000 euro stud fee PLUS an addition 4,000 euro when the mare is pregnant (with a limit of 2 inseminations! That’s a whopping 5,000 euro! The breeding business is surely changing, getting more commercial and expensive each year. “We only have a very limited amount of frozen semen availble,” Joop van Uytert told Eurodressage. “Therefore the inseminations will only be done via the Equine Clinic of Utrecht.”

What is it available in the US, what is the current price, and who represents it?

Well, apparently the Van Uytert semen is useless because of the way they freeze their stallions… (just what numerous people have said but I have no first hand experience). I wanted to breed to Gribaldi years ago and was told the semen was no good so not sure how he is going to do with his buisness plan.

Sounds like a very limited plan, if the semen can only be used in Holland.

Are there any brokers on other continents that normally represent this semen? So everyone else is SOL. Wonder how that will effect agents with straws in their tanks?

Yes, it was available through at least one big semen broker here a few years ago. I had ordered some prior to knowing the quality but because of the CEM issue it ended up not working out (I was so dissapointed at the time but in hindsight I am very happy I didn’t waste my money).

I do know she didn’t have it in her tanks, she had to order it.

Starting out by prefacing that I think Gribaldi was a nice stallion and obviously proved himself in sport and as a sire but in my personal opinion I think if you were looking for the real key to Totilas’s success genetically I would guess to pin it on his mare line and his grand sire http://www.gestuet-haemelschenburg.de/html/ikosto.html http://www.gestuet-haemelschenburg.de/html/e_kostol.html

If I was looking to ride that train in any shape or form I would go to Kostolany not Gribaldi.

You might just be right that grandfather Kostolany is the “key” to Totilas, and not his father, Gribaldi! :yes:

Maybe you would find that you could look even farther back and say Toto’s genetic super nova could be attributed to not even Kostolany(whom I love) but even the great Enrico Caruso who also even in just pheno type is very similar to Toto, and perhaps beyond him Mahagoni. I think that male line in general was very strong and still is again in my own personal opinion think Gribaldi is weaker than his sire and grand sires maybe the greatness skipped a generation or flourished when paired with the right mare line and type.

Please know also when I say weaker its just in personal taste, that I very much admire and respect what he accomplished.

What is the deal with Van Uytert?

What do they do to make their semen so useless and why do they do that? Seems counter-productive to me.

Trying to increase their revenue and value of future offspring by selling semen based on supply, demand, price, and approval of mares through application; hmmm. Gamble, gamble, gamble as to how many people are going to bite.

Does anyone know the number of mares bred to Totilas 2010?
How many stayed in foal?
Is there a list of when these foals are due?

What they might indeed be doing is narrowing their market down so much, they are selling them selves short. WAY short. Not many mare owners who want to spend or would spend that much money if they could on unproven (Totilas) stallions. Potentially a HUGE risk.

The truth will be in the pudding of years to come.

That being said, if I did have the money to gamble and risk, would I breed to Totilas? Yes, I would! I have several mares I’d love to try him on. It would be fun to dream about what could be produced!

Honestly, if I had “the money” I would rather breed to Totilas, and I would buy a special mare specifically for him too (assuming I could find the right gem). Why not…if you have the money.

At least you would sell the first foal or two–it takes a bit of time to see if they are going to live up to the hype.

While I believe there are many more factors than just Gribaldi contributing to Totilas, he is undoubtably a superstar sire (and was a great dressage horse too). He has produced many winning international GP dressage horses such as :

Picasso Sv, Pasternak (Coby Van Baalan), IPS painted Black, Sisther De Ju, Totilas (and his full sister who is outstanding!), Stafano, Rapsody, Peter Pan, Zardin Firfod. As of 2008 (I couldn’t find a more recent list) all were competing internationally at GP. His oldest offspring at that point were only 11 making him the #9 sire according to WFSHB.

He is also the sire of many super lisenced sons and young horse champions like Distelzar (most expensive trakehner ever as of 2008), Hofrat, Easy Game, Game Boy ect ect

I am sure there are many more to add to the list as of 2011…it’s really a shame about the semen.

I’m simply amazed at the cookie-cutter quality of the sireline. Look at photos of:

Kostolony
Gribaldi
Totilas

They are mirror images of eachother! I love love love Kostolony and his sire, EC. Amazing how versatile they were. The photos showing them doing everything from tricks (laying down), circus, vaulting, jumping, skijoring, sleigh rides, kids “pony” AND DRESSAGE…it’s just beatiful! Must be something that Otto prided himself on (wht EC and Kostolony)

I just had to remark on the likeness of this line. Talk about stamping your foals! You could put Totilas next to EC and they could pass as eachother, phenotype-wise.

If I had a Minka line mare I would breed her to Gribaldi and hope to get something nearly as good as Toto. Although I do think Edward Gal had a lot to do with the success of Toto.

Or perhaps I’d use one of Gribaldi’s close relatives such as Sanssouci (by Kostolany out of a Ibikus mare from the famous Schwarze Schwalbe line) or his full brother Showmaster. Or perhaps my personal favourite Silvermoon who is by Kostolany and line bred to the wonderful Mahagoni.

I have this hang up, not really sure why, on really wanting to breed to another Gribaldi son, Wish Upon A Star. Anyone know more about him than can be found on his website? I’m not sure why he sticks in my mind so much, but I have frequent visions of crossing him on one or two of my mares.

Stay away from Gribaldi semen and any other semen that is produced and sold by Joop van Uytert!

Mr. van Uytert was invited to the KWPN-NA 2012 Annual Meeting which took place in Den Bosch this year and when asked about the problems with the semen produced by his horses he denied everything and then told everybody in attendance that he wasn’t interested in doing business with America!

Mind you, all the other stallion owners in Holland assured the KWPN-NA that they were very interested in good relations with the US breeders.

Joop van Uytert is a piece of work and American breeders need to be aware of his “lack of business ethics”.

I’ve just bought 4 doses of Silvermoon frozen semen from Gestut Ammerland. They, as usual, have been polite, helpful and very efficient and their English is excellent. I’ll let you know how I get on with it but reports are that it works well. A bit of a contrast to Gribaldi frozen.

And just in case the strength of this sire line comes not from Kostolany or his sire Enrico Caruso but from the grandire Mahagoni he’s linebred to Mahagoni 2x3. I think you can spot a Silvermoon from 100 paces by the strong loin and quarters he puts on them. Being a stamping stallion isn’t surprising with that degree of linebreeding in the pedigree.
