HAIR TIES ARE NOT DIGESTABLE!

So here is our kitty 101 lesson of the day. Today we learned that no matter how fun it is to play with hair ties we are NEVER to try to eat one! No matter how tasty these devilish things may look.

If any of you saw my last post you will notice that my cat is not exactly… normal. Well she has outdone herself now.

It all started two days ago. I noticed she was sleeping alot more than normal. So i told my dear hubby that i was concerned about her. His response of course was any mans response. I was worrying to much and that everything was fine.

Well, Sunday came and we were out and about like usual. We came home to a sleepy cat again. Which because of all the running around we did we were ok with. We didn’t even notice anything wrong.

This morning I woke up to the most awful noise. My poor kitty was laying in the middle of the living room yowling. (that is the best discription i can come up with). Poor thing had thrown up a few times and wouldn’t eat or drink anything. So off to the vets we go.

The vets wife met me at the clinic. I had to go to work but she said that it was fine they would check her out and give me a call with what she found.

Then the real call came. An hour later i was called and informed that there was a blockage in her intestinal track. He also told me the only way to get it out was exploratory surgery.

So after “fibbing” to the hubby about the cost of the surgery and working a sweet deal with the vets to spay her while they had her sedated we went ahead with it.

An hour and a half went buy. Finally the vet calls and asks me if I am missing a hair tie… FML… He says in his 25 years of being a vet this was a first for him. Great i have the physco special kitty from hell… That is now worth $600.00 more…

Sorry so long i had to vent!!!

Neither are bottle caps. Shredded our doberman’s stomach so he was leaking from his intestines into his ‘chest’ cavity (body cavity?). Thankfully, since it didn’t show up on x-ray we decided to do exploratory (and life saving!) surgery. Probably close to $2000 later he managed to pull through (though it was touch and go the first couple days praying the stitches would hold)
Glad your cat will be ok.

Oh wow! Thats awful!!! Glad he pulled through! That is what i am worried about with the cat. She is so active i just don’t want her tearing anything and me not knowing!

I’ve seen them nearly die of hair ties, rubber bands, rug fringes, plastic bags, popped balloons and in one memorable case, a rotten frog.

My mom spend about $2500 on that frog case; middle of the night emergency vet in a town 90 miles away. Cat barely survived but he’s alive and well now two years later.

Glad your kitty is ok-hope she doesn’t make a habit of that!

Wow the rotten frog one would be a very memorable case!

I am hoping she is not a repeat offender of this! I don’t know if i can afford anymore craziness from her. She is staying at the vets tonight so they can monitor her. Just because she was out for about an hour under heavy anesthetic. So the dear hubby gets to go pick her up first thing tomorrow since ill be working. Hopefully he doesn’t ask to pay some of the bill lol.

Kitties! I am so paranoid about those hair ties and rubber bands and anything stringy! So glad to hear your little monster is going to be fine.

I groomed a dog once that had a compacted (due to digestion) grocery bag half pooped out when he came for his grooming. I had to slowly and carefully remove said bag from dog’s butt.

ewwww ^^^^

But you are awesome for removing said bag

ETA: did the owners not notice or just didn’t want to do the dirty work?

linear foreign bodies can be fatal

once pulled the inseam of a pair of jeans from a dachshund. Apparently the dog had a favorite pair of old jeans he liked to sleep on.

Typically Linear FB are the cat specialty. Their barbed tongue makes it difficult to spit out things.

I gave up having a wand and sting toy (cat fishing poll) when I came home and found my cat had swallowed the twizzle at the end of the string and had the string running from his mouth, wand still attached. Thankfully we were able to pull it out.

I have to be extremely careful about mine…both cats are horrid thieves and if I leave the drawer open even a crack, I will come home to find it emptied and have to retrieve my items from beneath various places. Hair ties are a favorite.

My jrt ate 25. Scoped them all out, thankfully they made a large ball that stayed in her stomach! The pittie passes them in her poop…and they are definitely not reused!

I have NO idea how the jack obtained 25…

$600 is a fantastic deal for exploratory surgery!

I think my sister is out $1,500 or so for hers plus hospitalization for several days. His was an odd case because we suspected foreign body (lethargy, no appetite, etc.) but x-rays and ultrasound kept being inconclusive.

After pursuing the vet to humor us and go ahead with the surgery we got the phone call… SARAN WRAP!

What kind of cat eats an entire sheet of saran wrap because apparently it tasted vaguely like a blueberry muffin?

They at least made themselves appear to be unknowing, though didn’t show as much surprise as I would have to know that my bichon sized dog had eaten and mostly passed a whole, intact grocery bag.

UPDATE Sorry I have not been able to get on to give an update for a few days. Miss thing is home and well. I think everyone at the vets was very excited to get rid of her lol I guess she got a tech pretty good while she was there.

Anyways, I got her home and looked at her belly and she had really irritated the incision. I don’t blame the vets for not knowing about it. She wouldn’t let anyone get near her after she came out of the anesthetic. But now she is in what i call “The Cone of Shame”

Ohhhh…that is one upset kitty! I’m glad she is home and doing okay. They do make some nice soft flexible cones of shame that she might find a little more acceptable.

I know  I will get one tomorrow the vets are closed here. I live in a rural area so the closest open store is 40 min away. So she gets to deal with a Dixie plate and duct tape tonight

We ended up doing a midnight run to an emergency clinic (just 5 min down the road) with ours. “Cats NEVER bother incisions” … clearly they have never met a real cat. Ours was determined to try and rip his staples out.

** This came up today and apparently her actual total was $2,400 for a piece of saran wrap

yikes!

I just saw this GraceLikeRain! Ya lets hope my cat does not venture into saran wrap territory!!! I called the vet and left a message and told the vets that i was worried about her incision and that i made a “temporary fix” to the problem… we will see what they say… Thank goodness they gave her dis-solvable stitches so she cant bite on anything… Now just to keep her to stay calm for a week… Wish me luck! lol

When I was a teenager we had a JRTx. All of the sudden he stopped eating and began vomiting blood. Exploratory surgery revealed a 3"x2" piece of hard plastic with sharp edges. In a 17lb dog. How the HELL he managed to get it down we had no idea.

UPDATE So Miss Thing is doing great getting back to feeling herself but she has a bunch of bruising in the incision area. I called the vet today and he gave me some Vitamin K but im wondering if i need to watch for anything else… All i need her is to start going downhill when we just fixed her!

Here is a pic of the bruising… I’m not convinced this is a normal amount…
