Half lease - sharing equipment with other lessee?

Ugh, that would burn me, too. I’m sorry you had to deal with that! I’ve had something similar happen with a couple of really nice bridles and someone who did NOT have permission to use them, and it still burns me to look at the damage they caused! They were returned to me absolutely filthy as well, as if they’d been drug in the dirt.

Yes! I do the same!

Agree with everyone else and honestly I feel like you’re lucky the other lessee hasn’t just started using your equipment without your permission!

Oh sht that’s a good point. I currently schlep everything to and from the barn but was going to see if I could grab a spot in the tack room. I think I’ll just keep schlepping haha

I am pretty generous. For instance my lesson horse has some age related difficulties and I ended up lending some of my BOT and Smart Therapy stuff to the HORSE. My riding teacher who runs the whole shebang approves, and has put this stuff away in her personal cupboard so I and the lady who part leases this horse know where it is. I’ve also lent some of my Haas brushes to the HORSE (my name is on the brushes).

However I will NOT be lending my double bridle with the expensive titanium bits or my saddle with all the safety extras on it. This stuff just costs too much to lend out. Anyone who wants to ride him in a double bridle with titanium bits can just buy their own, the same with my saddle. That stuff goes home with me every time I ride, as well as my new Haas Shining Pack brushes (mine, Mine, MINE!!!)

I still have my 4 1/2" bits from decades ago. I have not run into a horse with a 4 1/2" mouth in over a decade, but when I do I am prepared!

When I half leased a horse of mine to someone else, I made sure that he had good quality, well-fitting tack for her to use, for his sake, and she took pretty good care of it.

Apparently, my blankets were a bit too ratty-looking, even if functional, for her, so she went out and bought nice new Rambos for him  and a new set of brushes.

I wasn’t going to complain, and neither was he. World’s most spoiled horse, may he rest in peace!

Agreed - no obligation to share.

I’m on the other side of this, in that I half-lease a horse and use the owner’s (nice) tack. As part of that, I make sure I am cleaning it, keeping it in good order, and ensuring it’s always put back exactly how I found it (or cleaner). Stirrups back on her setting, if horse’s boots get dirty they are washed, etc. To me, that’s the expectation when someone is allowing you to use their things.

That’s nice! I don’t think I’d buy blankets for a horse I only half leased.

At most, unless you buy/lease a horse of wildly differing proportions to your lease horse… most of your gear will be fine. Brushes, saddle pads, lead ropes…

If you go from standard sized horse to standard sized horse… at worst you’ll be out a saddle (unless you can get it refitted which most can), a girth, maybe a bit and a bigger / smaller browband/noseband. Halters? Damn all my halters fit all my horses - size 14hh to 16.2hh, OTTB to baroque-face. Hole punch not even required.

Unless Lease Horse is a petite Arab and Next Horse is a Clydie Clunker… think most of your gear will be OK with some minor adjustments.

Rugs excepted. All horses need new rugs. Except one of my oldies who gets bundled in emergency cast-offs like a waif. Bought her a new, fitting rug the other day… lasted not even an hour before it were torn asunder. Back to the neighbour’s give away two sizes too big emergency rug.

I owned the horse that I half leased to another person and she had no problem lending my tack to her friends at another barn without asking me. She’d say “I hope you don’t mind but…” I got really ticked when she loaned out my side reins and I had to keep asking her to get them back. After a couple of weeks, they finally reappeared dumped on the floor in front of my stall. Then find out she’s been letting her friend ride my horse and was going to let her boyfriend who didn’t ride at all get on my very sensitive OTTB. I put my foot down and said absolutely not. She got her nose bent out of joint on that one. I stopped half leasing with her after that fiasco.

I prefer a lessee use my saddle, pad and bridle as it fits my my horse.

She did end up with them after we put him down, and they are now warming her next half lease.

If you do allow the other leasee to use your tack, have a written contract that states she is responsible for any damage or loss while the tack is in her possession and state the serial number of the saddle etc. to insure, she takes care of it as you do. Otherwise, it’s very nice of you to let her use your tack to keep the leased horse happy.

@Spudsmyguy. what the he!!

IKR? The entitlement of people knows no bounds. I remember there was an envelope like card sized that was tacked to the barn bulletin board for months with my half lessee’s name on it. I finally opened it and it was a christmas card to half lessee and my horse! Dear X and Dobbin. Not to me, but half-lessee. I think she was confused over who actually owned her.

I can see this happening in a lesson/boarding barn where someone who is leasing encounters a person one night per week, and only that one night per week. That person might no idea that the person leasing does not own Dobbin. So it might not be entitlement as much as they simply do not know.

This was a small private barn where everyone knew everyone. The lessee and the card giver were friends outside of the barn as well so she knew who owned my horse. Also, lessee once asked me if I’d let card giver ride my horse, she has her own horse to ride, so no.

Keep schlepping.

I will never forget the time I walked out to the indoor ring to talk to the barn owner… Only to find the horse in the ring looked an awful lot like my new horse fresh off of the track – wait a minute… that is my horse… Being ridden by a teen when he is supposed to be on stall rest for a soft tissue injury.

That’s before getting into all the missing or borrowed flysprays, the many times I’ve found a blanket of mine on someone else’s horse, the boots that magically walked off and the grain that always seemed to go way quicker than my math said it should. People borrow, disabuse, and take things they shouldn’t all the time, in just about every barn.

Now my horses are at home and thankfully if something goes missing, I have no one to blame but ME – but if I ever board again, I’ll either schlep or keep that stuff locked in a trunk. Trust no one with your stuff! It’s yours, and only you should be using it.

We have a large, carded, Hunter pony 14.1 3/4 who has a 4 1/2 mouth. Her smaller “sister” aqha reining mare standing 14.0 1/2 on a tall day takes a 5. Go figure!
