Have you ever felt like quitting horses?

Excellent update. I believe I posted in this, or maybe just thought about it, but I think many of us have been there from time to time and I think the majority of us powered through and found happiness or at least purpose again.

A few days from the winter solstice and on night shift, I haven’t seen the sun in days (literally) and just messaged my friend group last night that I was farm shopping in Ohio because I am over the dark and the mud and not riding.

I’m 62 yo and horses have been a part of my life all my life. I live in the NE and the costs of owning a horse have skyrocketed – when I moved here it was a sizable but not encompassing proportion of my salary – now it is half of my income and there are few straight boarding barns left, we’re in half training just to stay at a barn that offers the care I want. I have not saved for retirement as much as a should have.

I have a 19 year old horse, gorgeous, sweet, rideable but with maintenance and some issues, and recently other life events make me feel like it is just not sustainable financially. I would give my horse away to someone I trust, he has been in steady work, but maintenance is rather expensive.

I don’t want to stop riding but a) I need to start saving and b) I can’t keep my horse in retirement (needs shoes, needs maintenance). I wonder what I am going to do.

Others in a similar situation?
