Thought I would do an update, since it’s been a few weeks…and I always wonder when looking up old threads with issues as to whether the problem was ever solved!
Great news…my mare has been going the best ever! She is tolerating the allergy shots well…we are on the second vial and she is a super good girl about getting two shots. I am glad they are more spaced out, as she was getting a tiny bit sore with the every other day for those first two weeks.
She is still on zyrtec for now…the head tossing is almost entirely gone as is the cough. We get a sneeze or two, but not every day and not as bad as they were. Will try an wean off that after summer as by then she will be almost on the max dose with the allergy shots too.
And…we can now canter, both leads, all over the arena!! With no drama! It’s really like I have a completely different horse with the allergy treatment and diet changes. I would have never thought allergies would have caused her issues until the cough started. Now all we went through last year with bit issues make sense - it was likely all allergy related but I didn’t recognize it as such.
I have also found a homemade horse treat recipe that is free of the stuff she’s allergic too…and she loves them! So now I add weekend baking to my list…but she’s worth it:)
