Heartbreaker CL ad, now Heartwarming Story: OldChestnutMare's Golden Retirement!

mare

What is going on? Been teaching all day.

I have a trailer in Nokesville. I can be a backup if needed. I can pick her up deliver her. I would need someone to go with me to help load. No charge.

I’m in the area. It sounds like her price may be worked out, but if she needs it I can chip in a bag of feed or alfalfa pellets.

Couldn’t wait till morning to see if anyone can take her. OK I’m good for more than the gas and meal
money towards rehoming or euth-ing.

If no one can take the old girl, yes put her down. But hopefully bluengrey will return, or someone else will.

It’s a huge responsiblity to take in a rescue. And to take in a very old rescue, well that’s really hard to do.

OK so back tomorrow. My amount of contribution will be defined by what is needed for either vet at rehoming or vet at euth-ing. Hopefully the former.

horse

Is someone collecting the funds to go get her?? If so, give me the info pls

Ummmmm
these people ARE asshats, but if you re-read the original ad, the part about “Struggling” is NOT about the horse struggling. I think the owner meant THEY are struggling financially, and cannot properly care for her.
The only thing is the horse is suffering, as they state “WE DONT LIKE TO SEE HER STRUGGLE AND WE DONT HAVE THE HEART TO PUT HER DOWN.”

So sad, she’s suffering and she needs to be put down, but we wont do it so let’s sell her so I can make some money off her, so they can buy her, and pay to put her down and pay to have her disposed of.

I don’t care how bad they are hurting financially, they should give her to us.

I agree. But usually they are such asshats, that they wont.
Can one of the more established Cothers call Bluengray and maybe get some photos of her farm as well? Since they don’t have any history here it would be nice to confirm that the mare would be going somewhere safe
Just saying
Thinking the same thing

For what it’s worth, my questions to the owner:

How is she struggling? Is she in pain or could she be comfortable retired to a pasture?

The owner’s response:

She just needs to be cared for needs people who can spend time wiht her or other horses she is all alone and by herslf in the field and we struggle to pay for her feed and hay. She is not in pain though

Now, that could be that the owner means that the mare is not three-legged lame. But at 35 years old, no doubt the mare has some arthritis and who knows what else going on. That’s something that will need to be evaluated as to whether she truly can be comfortable or not.

You guys are amazing.
I’m in for $20.

mare

How amazing are we–I am still sitting here on my $40

Its not always quick :frowning:
I am an insommniac so could be wondering all night!!

It’s late but the time change has me unable to sleep yet. I probably should not post this late because I am tired, but not able to sleep.

I can’t resist a comment-

I have my FLAME SUIT on because I am sure I will get jumped on, but why should the owners just “give” the horse to “us” or anyone else?

I mean really? Do you have more concern for a horse than people? If these people are hurting financially and that $100 means the difference keeping the lights on or not, would THAT make a difference? Would you care how bad their financial situation was THEN? What about if they need the $100 to help make the rent or mortgage payment? How about that?

Maybe grandma needs her medicine and selling the horse will help pay for the prescription. Maybe grandma isn’t old enough to get Medicare and the family has an income that is just a couple dollars per month over what the government allows-- no Medicaid for you, or any other services either!!!

Or maybe the family breadwinner got hurt on the job or has a medical problem, and can’t work but has been turned down for disability. You would be surprised at the older people I have met with REAL medical problems that (probably) keep anyone from hiring them, but they have been turned down for disability, repeatedly.

Maybe they can’t afford to call the vet and pay for the euthansia and body disposal. Maybe they can’t figure hou how everything started falling apart, but are too proud to just come right out and beg for money to be able to afford it.

Get a clue- there are many, many, many people who, through NO FAULT OF THER OWN, are hanging on by a thread, especially people with older family menbers or children to care for in these hard times.

These people have reached out to try to do something about the horse. Maybe they don’t think she is struggling enough that she needs to die, or maybe they really mean they are struggling.

And really maybe she is an old horse who has been remarkably healthy and lucky. So, she may have some arthritis- I have arthritis- would you suggest I be “euthanized” because my quality of life isn’t what it was before the symptoms started getting worse? Maybe this horse just needs some help and suppliments —suppliments her current owners can’t afford.

Ya know, they could have just stopped going out to feed her and let her starve to death, but they haven’t done that. They put an ad on craigslist. If you don’t like the situation, just walk away. But don’t judge. You don’t know what is going on in these people’s lives. But you should thank your lucky stars every day that it’s someone else and not YOU in this situation.

I hope the buy comes off, and the horse gets whatever help she needs. —A comfy home for her last days, weeks, moths or years, or a quick and dignified euthansia. It is great that coth people in the area where the horse is are working together to try to get her situation resolved.

Reading this thread at 0400
and have chills and tears. You guys are wonderful. Divine Power of Choice Bless You All.

I SOOOO hope BNG comes through, CP can do her thing, and this sweet soul can land in a very soft place.

The fact that the people are suffering financially does not mean the horse has value. Charging someone $200 to take their problem of their hands seems tantamount to holding the horse for ransom–while the horse continues to suffer.

I DO have sympathy for the owners. But I still think it is bull$hit to expect someone else to pay for an animal that has no value and that will continue to suffer as long as the horse remains in the care of someone who can’t afford it.

And whoever these people are, $200 may tide them over for what–a few weeks at best? Even were they able to sell this horse, it sounds like they need a lot more help than her purchase price is going to buy.

Hey guys, let’s don’t turn on each other till we get the horse, OK? All the speculation about the owners and family are just that, speculation.

We still need someone to either take the horse and care for her, a huge responsibility; or to take the horse and euth her, a hard thing to have t o watch.

Yes people should do the right thing and give her up free. But we don’t know if these people are ignorant or venial or what. However, if we can get the horse, then if someone up there wants to investigate and find out if the owners are bad or good (all according to our coth standards of horse ownership) then great. (I can only be the coth investigator for SE GA and coastal SC.) At least they are not eating the horse.

Meanwhile, the clock is ticking. The horse is old and “struggling” and may not be around much longer if we cannot find her a home in which to live out her last days or weeks or years.

I want instant gratification. I sure hope someone steps forward to go look at her and tell us what is best for us to do.

Fellow COTHers - Is this where we are?

BNG has offered a home, and C&C is going to take a look today at the farm

Funding has been offered for what the mare needs (purchase, feed, travel, euth) (is anyone keeping a list of who and how much $?)

So
we’re waiting for the ‘all clear’ on the farm. In the meantime, any other offers just in case BNG can’t take her?

And, once the place is set, who can go make the purchase, and who can move her?

Just trying to stay organized

My offer of a trailer ride stands. If possible I would like to have someone ride along to help load and possible coroboration

BB – the current owner should more or less surrender this animal because in the real world, this horse has no sale value at all. The owner’s needs do not magically cause the ancient horse they own to have resale value. You do see that, right?

I would happily contribute $25 to this effort, but not because the horse is ‘worth’ $x hundred dollars, but because making the animal suffer because it’s owned by someone with a poor understanding of market economics is dumb.

My pledged funds can go to care or euthanasia. I trust whomever gets her to make that determination, however, I wanted to say that if she’s 35 and has lived in less than ideal conditions, she is probably one tough lady.

I will watch the thread today and send my money as soon as there is a place to send it. I am praying this horse lands in a soft spot soon.
