That ad makes me sick to my stomach. They say in the bottom that she IS struggling, but they don’t have the heart to end it. They don’t deserve to reproduce, or own animals.
Jingles for this mare and whoever can help her. I can throw in $10 via PayPal. Not much, but that’s the balance left on my account!
Oh wow, yes. Not to insult bluengray, but we don’t want to put the old girl in a worse situation than she is now. So if someone can go look? And then if things don’t work out, best to put old girl down. If place is good for her, she can last a few more years out with other horses.
We will send our money to whomever needs it for purchase or transport or vetting for mare, or for someone’s gas to go check out the proposed new home. If she is 35, her teeth are going to need work. And hooves. and everything else. She’s gotta be hardy and tough to have survived this long.
Looks like Opal is about 45 miles from me. I can’t keep her but I have a trailer and can arrange a kind end for the old lady
Is the horse in Opal? Remington is right down the road, 5 to 10 minutes from Opal.

I sold my trailer, but if you guys need eyeballs on a farm I am game to take a look. I live about 20 minutes from Opal area, and can have hubby drive me out to see whatever. PM me if the decision gets made today and you all want my help.

Re: working with owner, just remember that she has to agree to the sale, and if she hadn’t placed the CL ad, the old horse wouldn’t have kindness and mercy in her future. Tread gently.

Any excess money after expenses can be used (if it’s ok with everyone) for vet and farrier bills.
Remember when savoy8 went to get the phillyfilly and the guy wanted to “hook up?” She handled that very well and got the mare for 1/2 price. And didn’t have to date any of the guys there!
The Hessen horse and his domestic partner (oh that sounds funny, Hattie is a Minnesota Trakehner mare) are waiting to help pay for the old girl to get a hopefully good home to live out her final years.

And not to single her out for needing her farm etc checked out - I think it would be a good idea for any CoTH rescue like this - to have all the prospective homes checked out - by other CoTher’s - if possible. Not just BnG’s.

OK I’m off for the night but will check in first thing in morning before I go to barn. Please someone get her. And we’ll all send our money to you.
Please also remember that if the mare has not had much to eat, be careful when you start feeding her. Too much food and too rich food can kill her. Slowly increase her feed. And beware worming a horse full of worms. Impaction colic can result. She’s going to need a lot of tender loving care but she’s a tough old girl so she should make it. If someone will take her in!
I also hope B&G wasn’t put off by the notion of having her place checked out. This mare doesn’t need the taj mahal so I hope she wasn’t scared off. Just need to make sure there is a barn/shelter and a field and not a ride to the closest auction.

Exactly.
Although lets face it… 35. Has she been well cared for? Maybe. Probably not. Might be best to give her a bucket of sweetfeed and say goodbye.

BlueNGrey offered a home!!! Major good karma to you!!! But please don’t be offended that other posters want to double check that you have a farm and happy horses, it’s definitely nothing personal!!! There HAVE been some very creative scams and incidents over the years, several involving all manner of nutjobs here on this board, so it’s not a bad idea to verify that the mare will indeed go to a safe haven. :yes:
Carolprudm has offered to trailer the mare. :D:D And IF a home doesn’t work out for her, Carol also offered to arrange a humane end if necessary.
ALittleGray offered to take a look at the prospective farm taking the mare in, if BlueNGrey is willing. :yes:
If BlueNGrey wishes to bow out, then we’ll go from there. She hasn’t commented since earlier today, which is not a good sign but perhaps SHE has an actual life, unlike the rest of us. 
(BNG, we’re all quite impatient here in cyberspace! :lol: Especially when it comes to coordinating pulling a horse out of a bad situation. :sadsmile:) But let’s give her a bit more time to respond. BlueNGrey, if you do prefer not to get involved now, please just let us know so we can try to help this mare before the inevitable broker buys her to ship to slaughter.

Is everyone okay with any amount over the amount paid to the seller (she’s asking for $100 in her ad) going to the vet/farrier?

I would be willing to pitch in 20 dollars—a donation from my rescue gelding to this mare–
use it for anything she may need, farrier, vet, euth etc.
just tell me where to send the money.
I dont care how my money is used.
I would prefer that if she is not going to have quality of life without a big dent in resources, that she be kindly euthanized.
But I will not be making those decisions, just expressing my preference.
