Heidi Degele competing in Amateur???

She is competing this weekend in the CDI Amateur Small Tour at GDF 12. What professional who sells horses for a living does this??? I understand it’s “Allowed” as she isn’t FEI ranked, but it makes me NEVER want to buy a horse from her as an actual amateur. Thoughts???

This is an interesting first post.

You will notice I didn’t join today, although not sure why it would matter- what do you think SillyHorse??

Don’t get the excitement… are you competing? She will give those rich AA s some competition… why not…

Yes, I am competing and I think it’s poor sportsmanship for someone who is obviously a professional to compete in an amateur class. Have some self respect and do a 1*. I’m not a “Rich Amateur”- I work full time and have one horse. She rides horses for a living.

Karen Pavicic did the same thing when she switched from competing for Canada to competing for Croatia. It’s completely within the rules and not having an FEI ranking is how “amateur” is defined for those CDI classes. Maybe they should change the name of the division to “unranked” and that would stop people from getting their knickers in a knot about it?

I don’t get the fuss. Your scores are not affected by who else is competing in the class. That’s the beauty of dressage.

I think you are missing my point, BigMama1. Karen, understandably, faced a huge amount of criticism for competing in these classes as a professional and made the wise decision not to do it again. The CDIAM has become a big class and if you think you ride well enough to sell other peoples’ horses, go do the 1*, but don’t make those of us who are actually amateurs compete against you. Period. Have some self respect.

You can do a 1* unranked, and I think a 3*, she obviously just wants to say this horse placed __ in a CDI, even if it was against amateurs. I’m sure that detail will be excluded from the sales page…

I don’t know you, but I know a couple of AAs who are competing this weekend and honestly I am having a hard time to feel sorry for you.
The ones I know either live in Wellington or go there all the time to train with the best.
They ride several horses every day, just like a professional and they buy horses either from AH or internationally…
they have every chance to do extremly well.
Now they can prove that all their hard work was worth it

Let’s all feel so sorry for you, for a moment.

Life is so unfair… said the poor rider at GDF 12 while entering the ring for her small tour class…

Showing and winning is not the be all and end all of horsemanship. It’s a business.

I think you’re a whiner.

if the rider in question is playing within the rules, thats the way the game goes. If you are stepping into the FEI game then their rules .

Two weekends ago I was shooting on a championship line against a former member of Poland National / Olympic team. We had a good time together

There is going to always be someone better/ more privileged/ more experienced / more anything than you.

I think this is the crux of the issue. ‘Amateur’ in USEF is one thing and a COMPLETELY different thing in FEI. Changing the name of the CDI class would perhaps temper people’s expectations.

Words have power.

or perhaps understanding the rules. No reason for a show to change the official name of a class/division because someone needs to have their knowledge spoon-fed.

The FEI is a bit picky about these names

if you are going to play the game, understand the rules and accept them

Maybe my ignorance is showing, but how does selling horses = being a Pro riding horses?
She may be a fair-to-middling rider & feel competent enough to show a sales horse herself.
If she was teaching riders there might be reason to have panties wadded, but in this case…
What am I missing?

And it may be a tad early for margaritas, but if guac goes with them it is a Meal, right?

I’m with you @Fletch1 I know it’s completely within the rules, but I don’t like it. I didn’t like it when Karen did it either, and I think based on the backlash towards her, she probably won’t do it again. I’d like to see it as a division for USEF amateurs.
