Help A Girl Out - The Dreaded Equestrian Tan

I know this might belong on Off Course, but I usually stick to this board, so I’m asking y’all.

I’m super pale and like to use sunless tanner to help out with my equestrian tan. But there’s one problem: As soon as I ride, I end up with lines on my legs from the seams of my breeches and knee patches messing up the tan. I know it’s vain, but I feel more confident in dresses/skirts with some color on my legs to hide veins and unexplained equestrian bruises.

Has anyone found a self-tanner that lasts through this?

My only advice is to embrace the pale
I gave up a long time ago having anything but ghost white legs. Those self tanners never seemed to do a thing.
If you are really self conscious though, you can use a bronzer powder (like one for your face) on your legs before you go out.

What is this dresses/skirts thing of which you speak?

Sorry, another one with no help. I have just come to love my insane tan lines and breeches seam lines (and jump standard/mounting block/ rogue horse bruises…) I figure it gives people something to speculate over in boring morning meetings when I fly to work after the barn.

Well, that and the lingering barn smell, I’m sure

That said, I do have a pale and much more put-together friend who swears by the Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs:

This only works for warmer/sunnier climates but I like to do everything (except ride of course) at the barn in shorts/tennis shoes. Put a little SPF 10 lotion on so as not to burn and get a natural tan!!

I do like self-tanners that are lotion based though. Jergens has a good one that is subtle and builds pretty well overtime. I put it on at night before bed so I never gets streaks from it

Clinique makes a good self-tanner. It may take a few tries to get the application right (it takes some skill), but it’s a great one. St. Tropez is a great brand, too. Also, the Jergens lotion mentioned before is buildable, so if you apply it daily you’ll get a subtle wash of color. I buy the Deep/Tan shade and am fair-skinned, and it works great for me. They’ve drastically improved the scents so it’s much less offensive than they were years ago.

Accept it.

I’m very pale, with sensitive skin to boot…so sensitive that sometimes the seams on my pants leave scratches on my legs.

Self tanner helps, but I mean, who really wants to deal with that all the time all year round? Because let’s face it, in the summer your legs are still whiter than white. I’d get yourself a nice pair of panty-hose to conceal the fabulous, white legs you as a rider have been blessed with and rock your bruises along with a great dress!

lol… its a typical horsey tan thing…white legs bronze body
give up… the more your stressing about vainity…the more noticable it becomes… so accept it

I have used a tinted moisturizer on my legs for the same reason. It works well but can be a pain to do everyday.

I’ve had good results with “True” self tanner - https://www.amazon.com/True-Natural-Face-Body-Tanner/dp/B0051PLB6Q/ref=sr_1_1_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1474030414&sr=8-1&keywords=tru+self+tanner

No help here, but somewhere I have a photo of myself waterskiing at the end of a summer I spent in breeches and sleeveless polo shirts. No sunscreen in those days, either!

I look like a doll assembled from parts from two different bins: head and arms = very very dark brown; rest of body = pasty greenish white.

Pants are my friends…

Even when I wear shorts a lot, I still end up with the paddock boot tan lines. haaa. My feet rarely see the sun! So I usually opt for long pants when going out.

LOL I’ve embraced long-sleeves, gloves and and Equivisor.
No tan, no tan lines, no problem

The real reason is that I burn like crazy but I’m chronically incapable of remembering sunscreen, but its REALLY hard to forget your clothes

Are you talking self tanning lotion you apply or a spray tan?

Are you not fully “dry” before you put on your clothes? I have sprayed & used self tanner but not had that happen.

I have gotten to a point in my life where no matter how much I am in the sun, or even with a spray tan (this is RARE), my legs are NEVER as tan as the rest of my body  I think the cells that allow for nice golden tans have just given up on the lower half of my body. When I was in my early 20s, I use to go to tanning beds once or twice a week for a period of time (horrible, I know). I would cover up all the horsey exposed parts, and just leave the white parts out to fry. I would ask for extra towels and lay them across my face arms, chest, or what ever else was a decent brown already. It worked here and there, kinda, but definitely not the healthiest option, and not the cheapest either.

Luckily (or not, depending on how you look at it), I don’t really ever get bothered by my muti-colored body anymore. I also cover everything up now while inthe sun (long sleeves- huge visor etc), so its not as blatant. Maybe there are some people who are judgey, but if so then they are probably not my people anyways so I just go with it and rock the paleness

I am a big fan of Sally Hansen Airbrush legs. I put it on in the a.m. and it does not budge until I shower the next a.m. Not too hard to apply but you do have to pay attention so that it is even.

I like the spray tan from a salon way better than the stuff in a can - have you tried that instead? Do you have Shine in your area? Whatever spray they use has always lasted a good week to week and a half, even when I’m riding and sweating my butt off every day in the summer

That being said, I pretty much gave up on having a tan and instead wear long sleeved sun shirts all summer to avoid having funky tan lines. So now I’m just evenly pale everywhere

Rodan + Fields makes a good one. The first place it rubs off on my is under my boobs where my bra rubs it. But even that takes like a week. It’s a foam that’s really easy to put on. I’m not a girly girl and even I can do it without streaks lol! PM me and I can hook you up with my girl, she gets a discount!

Maxi dresses are your best friend.

I tried this stuff over the weekend. I’m not sure if I didn’t let it dry too long or because of the Florida humidity, but I ended up leaving a good amount of it all over my boyfriend’s leather seats. Whoops! After that, it didn’t seem to budge though.

I like Jergens Natural Glow, but I’m so lazy about applying lotion every day.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone! I’ll be bookmarking and making Sephora trips to test out options.
