Help identifying a brand

Hi everyone,

I just bought my FIRST HORSE (!!!) and I need some help with some brand info. On his left hindquarter he has a brand that identifies him as a German Riding Horse (ZfdP). On the other hindquarter is a brand I can’t identify. The picture I have is shows it here after being wetted down. We are going to body clip him once he comes home so maybe I’ll see it better then, but I can’t find anything that even remotely resembles it, so I was hoping for some help from very knowledgeable people here!

If anyone else has any info about the German Riding Horse I’d be very grateful. He’s a great find and I’m lucky to have come across him! More info when he makes it home safe…

It’s really tough to see but may look like a farm brand from a barn not to far from here. There is a farm in Canada that used to register their horses with ZfdP and they put their farm brand on the other hip, which is a pinetree type shape. The barn is called Tannefels stables and they also use the name European Warmblood Stallion Zentrum.

If he is registered/branded ZfdP, he can’t be registered with another registry, so the one on his r/h is probably a private brand. It is a bit hard to see clearly in the pic you posted - will be interesting to see what it looks like after clipping.

Also - ZfdP is a sort of a catch-all registry for horses that are not eligible for one reason or another for the more mainstream registries. Reasons can include stallions in the pedigree that are not licensed by the another registry, or color restrictions in the other registries, etc. I am not sure I would ever want one for breeding, but I have seen some nice riding horses from that registry.

This ^^ I cant see much

Vandenbrink is on the money. That is the farm brand of Tannenfels stable. It’s a fir tree.

All a farm brand does is identify it as a product of that particular program. It’s a practice not much used in warmbloods on this continent.

Thank you guys! I will get pictures again once we have him clipped. So if he’s a German Riding Horse, that doesn’t mean he’s imported, right? Or does it mean he was born on this continent because he has a farm brand too? I’m trying to learn more about the German Riding Horse but the website is in German and even Google can’t help me very much.

Here is their contact info: http://www.ewsz.com/tannenfels/contactus.asp

I’m sure they’ll tell you who he is, where he was bred, etc.

Wow, you have good eyes - I can’t see the fir tree at all!

Could be he was branded in Germany, and rebranded when imported. Or could be Tannenfel had a replica of the ZfdP brand made (with or without permission from the German organization), and used both it and his own farm brand on horses bred/born on his farm. Who is listed as breeder (Züchter) on his registration papers?

My eyes aren’t that great. I had one by Allerhand (he’s 22 this year), so I knew what to look for. I can’t tell you how many times I was stopped by people on showgrounds wanting to know what the heck brand that was on his flank. This was when they (Tannenfels) were using the farm brand on the left flank only.

Soooo…I don’t want to disclose all of the information until he’s in his stall at my barn, because I’m superstitious, but he has an unknown background. I don’t have papers on him, nor did the girl I bought him from. So we really don’t know anything.

Do you think it could possibly be this brand? Part of his history makes this possible. It’s quite a story and when he gets home, I’ll definitely need help tracing his history, so stay tuned…sorry for being so vague!

Contact Heidi at Tannenfels, she will be able to help you out. As well, they are currently shipping horses down to the winter farm in Ocala so if you are out and about showing, you may run into them. All of them are very knowledgeable about the bloodlines. Also–I see the main site is under construction so you might try through the Facebook site:

I would assume that the horse was born in Ontario, inspected and branded there. I have not known them to add their brand to a horse that they have not bred.

Congrats on your new horse.

Does the horse have the ZfDP brand?

http://www.zfdp.de/ (you can see it in the left corner of this site)

Just asking because you say German Riding Horse. This is the registry for German Riding Horses

I think it’s this brand:

wait for the flash video to play through - then you’ll see a clear impression.

Yes he has a ZfDP brand on the left hindquarter. Most definitely.

It does look like that brand, ahf, dilligaf2! Thank you SO much for that link! I’ll call her and find out the whole story. It definitely looks like that moreso than the one I posted because of the little part sticking out at the bottom. The part about Tannenfels having a farm in Ocala also seems to fit with his puzzle

Exciting! I’ll post more pictures when he’s home…maybe someone knows something about him!

If that is the case I bet he is imported from Germany. I don’t think there are inspectors that travel outside of the mother land

Really? Hmmm. Interesting. Here is a picture of the ZfDP brand. If I’m incorrect, please let me know! But I’m pretty sure that’s what it is.

Looks to be it. My mare had one. Do you see numbers below it? (the cross looks a little xtra wide though)

hmmm you may be right. I missed this statement. If there are no numbers below the brand you may have hit it…

Apropos of nothing…just curiosity.

When Zangersheide breeds a horse they register with another studbook, like Holsteiner or Hanoverian, do they also brand with the Z on the right flank with the registration brand on the left?

Chris? Do you know?

No numbers that I can see. This is all really interesting!
