that is interesting but it may be the way the horse was branded also.
With my mare you could barely see her brand but you could see the numbers better. You may see his numbers better after a workout and wetting it or if you shave it? Maybe he has none at all and they were branded by the breeder not the Registry (something I have never heard of…lol)
My registered Zangersheide mare had the Z brand on her right hip. My registered BWP stallion that was purchased by Zangersheide and had his name changed (from Tarco du Marais DD to Valentino Z) only had the BWP brand on the left hip - nothing on the right.
Edited to add - of course, branding in Belgium is illegal now, so I imagine the only Z horses that are getting branded are the ones from the South American studfarm.
Update! He is officially mine so I can now show pictures 
He MOST DEFINITELY has both the Tannenfels brand on the right hip (which I will get better pictures of tomorrow) now that he’s clipped. He needs to be wormed, put on muscle, his feet done, and a little more beautifying, but he’s on his way to being everything I hoped for (hopefully). He’s been out of work for a while after being owned by a girl who wasn’t able to take care of him anymore so we’re starting out slow for now. He’s been great for everything we’ve done so far, though, so I wonder about his past. I at least wish I knew his sire so I could try to pick a name.
Thanks for everyone’s help in giving me a little clue about my new guy! He just needs a name now…something classy but not pretentious. He’s the sweetest and very cuddly, very easygoing. And I loff his big floppy ears!!!

Really? How is it different? Wider cross? Could that mean, like you’ve said, that he wasn’t branded by the registry? How do brands change as horses grow? What age are they typically branded?

Agree he is quite cute! But the brand on his left flank looks pretty much identical to the ZfDP brand shown in the Bernd Eyler’s stallion books.
IMO The cross looks a bit thicker than the normal ZfDP and you don’t see any numbers at all. There should be 2 numbers below the brand. The middle of the cross should be thinner
My mare had the brand but you couldn’t see it very well. I could see the numbers better than the brand but you may see the brand better than the numbers.

I believe the numbers are only used if the horse is branded in Germany. There is some conjecture this horse was bred in Canada, and bred with a replica brand.
Yes, I think it is a replica. I was just trying to figure out if it was legit by the registry
Again, the farm will be able to help out. All of their foals are now inspected and branded RPSI over an annual 2 day inspection that takes place at the farm.
He is older so may be before them going to RPSI. I am going to try a guess that he is out of Amatuer

No, I don’t know for sure, but I have heard of cases where Zangersheide did put its own brand on a purchased horse, and also of cases where they did not do it. I was told at one time some of the other registries were not happy with that policy, and there were apparently some heated discussions about it, but Zangersheide is a private registry based outside of Germany, so there wasn’t much anyone could do about it except complain.
Also - see Ronda’s post above (#22) regarding her BwP stallion purchased from Zangersheide that had only the BwP brand.

He was sold without papers, registry numbers, and as far as I know, a name. He so far is sane, safe, and sound. Is this a red flag? Should I even go digging to contact the farm?

Many horses are sold without papers without it being cause for concern… I don’t see how, if anything nefarious happened, you could be held responsible for anything?
Call Heidi at Tannenfels. PM me for the phone number if you can’t find it. They are professional breeders and it wouldn’t surprise me if they know exactly who this boy is with parentage back several generations!
If he is an Amateur baby, you are one lucky person! Solid, solid and a temperament people pay top dollar for. In fact, Amateur is my stud of choice if I ever breed my mare, mainly due to what I’ve seen in his off-spring. Quiet, calm, unfazed, willing and athletic.
Having boarded there for years, I can give you my guarantee that they will help you as much as they can in order to see one of their horses in a good situation.

He really DOES share a striking resemblance to Amateur, for what it’s worth. His temperament fits what you described, NJR, to an absolute “t.”

I think I may have been wrong on Amatuer. I was just guessing based on type but Heidi indicated it was Forever who is also a superb stallion and wonderfully bred.

Dear Pancake, yes your horse was bred at EWSZ and yes all the horses bred by
EWSZ carry the pine tree (farm brand), the registry brand and are also micro
chipped. We do this for the protection of our clients, our horses as well as
ourselves. In the case of the horse you purchased… I am very sorry to
have to tell you that the horse you are asking about had an unfortunate
pasture injury to his front leg as a 4 year old. He had surgery done to try
and repair the damage to the leg and he was rehabbed for almost two years.
Finally after carefully evaluating the future of the horse and the effect
that this injury would have on the horses riding carrier and also
considering the safety of any future rider, EWSZ decided that it would be
unethical to sell this horse to anyone. He was given away as a pasture
ornament and companion horse with no papers under the condition that he
would never be sold or ridden.
Oh how sad. For Pancake’s sake I hope it is not the same horse.
