Help! Kitten found in drop ceiling at office (with pic)

It’s eyes are still closed and it seems cold, but we want to give the mom a chance to come get him, so we set him out near where he must have fallen down the drop ceiling. It’s warm out, in the 80s. I really hope she comes to get him. Any chance of that you think?

What is a reasonable amount of time to leave it there before giving up hope on mom getting him? If mom doesn’t come get him, just do kitten formula from TSC in a bottle?

Oh! Baby kitty! So adorable!

Is momma around anywhere? Did you ever hear her looking for him? I’d think that the chance she’d come back pretty slim, but it’s worth a shot. He might be mighty dehydrated already, though, and I’d be sorely tempted to get some KMR into him now. You’d need to feed him with a bottle, and he still might be young enough where he needs to be stimulated to potty–just take some gauze squares, dampen with warm water and wipe off his hiney, after he eats, until he poops and pees.

I just went out and checked on him and he had pooped where he was, so I think he’s good there. I can get the KMR in about 20ish minutes (still at work).

I have not seen mom, but there are several wild cats that roam all through our materials yard. Our offices are close to Walmart, so there are tons of strays around always. We put out food for them, so I put some food out and called to let them know I had put food out, like we normally do. I thought maybe she would come from food and get him.

I think he had just fallen over the edge into the ceiling right before we got him out because we hadn’t heard him all day and then all of a sudden there was a screaming kitten. We had him out within 15ish minutes. We had to cut a hole in the wall, after locating him, to get him out.

I’ll just take him home if his mom doesn’t come get him. My JRT is good with cats and maybe he will be ok with a kitten once it gets up and walking around.

I can’t wait around after the office is closed to see if she comes to get him as I’m carpooling and have to pick someone else up from work right after I get off. I’m afraid he would die before morning if I left him out. She has until 5, then I’m going to have no choice but to take him.

If you can, use a 50/50 mix of KMR and goats milk. It helps to keep them from getting too constipated. Or even just straight goats milk, I have had the best luck with it.

And if you still need to stimulate him(chances are you will with eyes still closed) don’t be afraid of being too rough. The biggest mastake people make when stimulating kittens is being so gentle they don’t get much of a response.

He’s pooped and peed, so I think he’s ok in that department. I’m having trouble getting him to eat though. I feel like I’m only getting a tiny tiny bit into him, not even close to what was recommended on the KMR milk container. I’m not sure where I can get goat’s milk, but I will try that if I can find some. Maybe he will like the goat’s milk better.

Smear some karo syrup on his gums. It will often give them enough of a boost to start eating. Does the nipple have enough flow? You want it easy, but not streaming out.

I can find goats milk at my local Whole Foods.

Good luck!

If his eyes are still closed I definitely think you need to stimulate him to potty… he may have gone because there was no other option if his bladder was too full.

I raised a litter of orphan kitties and over time they learned how to eat from a syringe pretty well.

Oh good luck with him and bless you for taking him!! I agree if eyes are not open you will need to stimulate to get him to poop. I raised an only orphan kitten myself years ago when the momma cat got hit by a car about 3 days after the birth. Make sure you keep him nice and warm.

Ok, I will try stimulating him. I have him with my dog sitter today while I’m at work…lol. I have him in a box, in a dog heated dog bed with a towel on top of it. He can get up and out of it if he gets too warm. He’s pretty mobile and it seems he’s trying to open his eyes. Dog sitter has directions on feeding him.

We don’t have Whole Foods, but our Walmart sells goat meat, so maybe they will have goat’s milk? I will try a few places and see what I can find. I will try the Karo syrup too.

Thanks guys!

You definitely need to stimulate him; he is very young, and they need that help until they are at least three weeks old. Warm him before you try and feed him. Young kittens have no ability to monitor their body temp. and you will need to get him warm before he can eat. This is an excellent resource for information on bottle baby kittens. http://www.nycferalcat.org/BottleFeedingKittens-Legal.pdf

Yes, be sure to give him enough room to move away from the heated area. Also, they seem to like a stuffed animal to cuddle with…soft squishy ones
that are sort of floppy.

Most nipples need the end modified a little–make a little bigger, but not too big. Be sure to feed them on their tummies, not on their backs.

Yep, should be able to get goats milk at Walmart or a grocery store. A lot of times it’s in cans.

Kittens that are used to eating moms milk sometimes take a bit to adjust to replacer because it tastes different. If you have a kitchen or gram scale weigh the little bugger and monitor that as a good indicator of how he’s doing and if he’s eating enough. If you turn the bottle upside down the formula should drip out a drop at a time, without squeezing and without being a stream

Thank you fir taking him in.

I raised 4 of them some years back. I feed with a eye dropper hourly at first.
I used Karo syrup as a stimulator and also used Pedialyte . Also wash their butts with a warm wash cloth to simulate them.
I also put cat litter in a small box and after washing sat them in it. At first they might try to eat it therefore use very little or shredded newspaper when a little older.

These articles helped me.

YOU’RE DOING GREAT ``` BLESS YOU FOR HELPING HIM ~

How is the baby meow this evening RR? I hope all is well

A few years ago, my dad came across a very, very young rabbit with no mother. Per the recommendation of the wildlife sanctuary I talked to at the time, goat’s milk is the best choice for not only rabbits, but for small animals in general.

I was able to purchase powdered goat’s milk at PETCO. The package came with a syringe and everything, including instructions on how much water to mix it with.

If I’m not mistaken, it was for use in puppies, kittens, rabbits, ferrets, and any other small animal.

I can’t find the extact product I bought (it’s been several years) but did find this website that may be helpful to you.

Good luck and keep us posted!

Karo syrup and goat’s milk were a big hit for the little guy. He actually smacked…lol.

This morning he seemed a bit listless though and I was worried about him, but then an odd thing happened.

Yesterday, when I got him, my dog sitter said that he saw a new cat around the house and it looked like it was preggers. Argh!! This happens every year. I try and get all the barn cats fixed, then someone drops off a pregnant momma and it starts all over again with kittens to have altered. So, this AM, I walked out to feed the horses and asked my helper, “Do you hear kittens?”. Sure enough, the new cat had birthed kittens in my patio storage box. I had a bit of a lightbulb moment and went and grabbed the office kitten and stuck him in the box. Momma cat took him on, cleaning him, and he started purring and trying to nurse her immediately. Everything looked ok, so I left him out with them and my dog sitter is going to watch to make the sure the momma doesn’t turn on him.

Fingers crossed she can raise him, so he has a momma.
