Help me shop for a sheet/blanket

You guys are REALLY good at this, I’ve seen your magic before.

I’m looking for a stable/lightweight sheet. The BO wants “jammies” on them at night when it’s really cold, and I’m struggling to find what I’m looking for. This blanket/sheet does not have to be durable, as she puts their turnout blankets over the sheets when they go outside in the morning.

Must haves:

  • Shoulder gussets - her shoulders are huge
  • Some kind of nylon (I have the Smartpak Coolmax sheet and it’s rubbing the snot out of her shoulders)
  • Not outrageously expensive

Nice to have:

  • Ability to clip a neck rug onto (I have all high neck blankets, but the lack of neck rug drives my BO nuts, she thinks my mare is cold and I’ve gone out and found a sleazy on her - that’s how bad this drives her nuts - yes, I took the sleazy off because it was doing nothing, or maybe making it worse)
  • Leg straps (mare, tail straps get so gross)

HALP ME.

I’m curious why the BO is dictating that horses have something on them in their stalls? That’s adding work that doesn’t need to be there.

Agree on the sleazy - nothing better to make a horse cold(er) than to lay down the hair without replacing and adding the warmth  Why is she doing all that???

Schneiders has a 80gm (100gm?) sheet, nylon lining, though I’m not sure if any of those come in a high neck style, nor if they also have neck clips. They do fit the leg strap and gusset requirements though, most don’t have gussets in the right place OR long enough.

She chronically over blankets, and I’m not going to argue because it upsets her.

I did put my foot down when she wanted me to buy all new hooded blankets because she thought my high necks were not enough. No, I’m not dropping $500 on a new set of blankets.

That’s when I caught her putting the sleazy on, and we had a talk.

Big Dee’s is having a sale right now on stable blankets. I have one and just bought another of their Country Pride brand. It has nylon lining, leg straps and gussets. It may be too heavy though for what you need. It’s 300gm and I’m not sure if they have lighter ones, it might be worth checking out just in case they do. They are nice and wash well.

Don’t have suggestions on which blankets, but I strongly recommend Facebook to source. I just got two almost like new Amigo Insulators for about $50 each, including shipping.

I suck at finding stuff on Facebook, tips?

Get a barnmate to do it for you! (Not kidding, because me too. My barnmate found them and negotiated and all I did was send along my address and Venmo…)

ETA: she also found me a heavily discounted, barely used Bruno on eBay. I think I paid $2k.

I have this one but an older model. It’s a 100 gram and has a matching hood sold separately. Mine is like 3 or 4 years old and has been a good blanket.

Premier Equine has some interesting looking 40 and 50 gram sheets but so far I’ve only found the no fill sheet available from a U.S. retailer, SmartPak

It comes with the hood I believe. I’ve been eyeing it for some time

I’ve always purchased not big name brand blankets & sheets: SmartPak & Schneiders to name a few. They have been fine to use.

7 years ago a mare I took in came with her Rambo wardrobe of stable sheet, turnout sheet and 2 different weights of turnout blankets. The difference in the quality and durability of the Rambo’s is astounding.

So if your horse is done growing and you plan on keeping it awhile I wouldn’t hesitate to spend the $$ on a Rambo products.

I love that weatherbeeta, does the wither relief make a difference?

I can’t find sheets with the features I want in Rambo. :frowning:

Yes! The foam pad at the withers reach back down the spine a good ways! It prevents the sheet from pressing down on the withers and conforms a bit to the horse’s back shape. I like the adjustable front and exterior hood attachment points too. My old TB wears it a lot and and he likes it. He’s picky about blanket fit and not afraid to share his opinions. Here’s a pic of him so you can see his conformation. He’s not in the best flesh in this pic as it was taken in the midst of laminitis and founder rehab. But you can see he’s got prominent withers and not much topline to pad his own self plus a decently large shoulder. Also included is a pic of him wearing it in case that’s helpful. I dunno about the new maroon ones, but my older purple one at the bottom where the black is has no fill which I like. A bit less weight.

I am a big fan of the Schneiders wither relief cuts. They are usually on sale (currently having a great sale) and the one for stock horse types fits my giant-shouldered downhill guy perfectly. They also have a cut for uphill types and I have heard great things about those too.

Thanks all for the ideas! I appreciate it!

The Rambo Optimo might have some of the features.

What about a Kool coat?

Is it a sheet or a stable rug she wants? I love the Amerigo insulators for stable rugs but they are 100-200gm.

A stable rug. But at the rate that I am NOT finding the features that I/my horse want, I think I’m going to tell her my mare can stay in her lightweight turnout.

Mare has gigantic shoulders, so any stable sheet without gussets is not going to do it. Sadly, a whole lot of them don’t have gussets.

This is the one I have

Premier Equine is an excellent brand. Smartpak seems to be carrying at least some of the line now, if you’re leery about ordering from Britain.

Their Buster Sheet is made for horses with big shoulders.

I have a 100 gm fill version of it for my Irish Draught mare and it fits very well, in her usual size.

@Jealoushe that really looks like a nice one (I love the front!), but the $$ just isn’t there for a blanket I don’t even think she needs. I’d choke spending that on a turnout blanket, haha.

Oh yes I bought mine used haha sorry I missed that part. Check out Kool Koats. They have gussets and cheap on rideawaystore.com
