Help me shop for - blaze orange

They can’t see the orange but they can see the block of “grey”. Hence orange camo.

There’s other colors they can’t see, too. The real reason is because , it’s the law that you have to have blaze orange on. Some states have minimum amounts, and most specify a hat/vest/what have you. It’s the color for all hunting not just deer.

The law is actually very complicated, with seasons within seasons, when you have to wear it and when you don’t.

As for me - blaze orange means “I’m not your target”.

There’s so many good ideas here! I wish I could use a quarter sheet but some of these trails are tight and have brambles at the edges, I don’t want to have an accident because my quarter sheet got caught on a tree lol

Go searching thru Etsy. Lots of people will make stuff for you.

This set looks nice.

BTW, I agree on wearing orange versus just any bright color.

It’s not complicated in my state, big game hunters and those with them have to wear it. Not bird hunters, not bow hunters in bow season, not me walking the dogs in the woods or riding a horse but it’s not a bad idea to do it. Many states don’t require it at all.

I think, no matter the rules in your state, it is smart to be visible when out and about in the woods. There is almost always something in season for hunting. Being more visible is never bad. Blaze orange is great for being more visible.

Bow hunters don’t have to wear it in Indiana either, unless it’s youth gun season which falls during bow season. During pheasant season, even guys on designated dog training grounds need to wear it, when any other time of the year they don’t. Pheasant hunters must have a hat and vest on, and the vest must have a minimum of 400 sq inches of solid blaze orange (camo not accepted). That’s the type of complication I’m talking about.

That is complicated! Ours is straight forward legally but safety-wise everyone is wearing orange in the fall. I used to ride a dun horse well into hunting season and I draped those $5 orange vests all over him and me and now put one on my dun colored dog the few times we’re in the woods during rifle season. At best he is the size of a fawn but that is no comfort.

Well shoot. The Mayatex blanket is not blaze orange at all, way less bright than the pictures depict. But the woof wear dressage pad looks about right!

Pretty color but yeah, not blaze. Bummer :frowning:

If brambles are keeping you from being comfortable with a quarter sheet, how about taking loppers with you on a walk, and cutting them back? A quarter sheet is just such a good answer to the visibility question, and they definitely are available in the right color!

I’d be there for years, haha. It’s miles of trails that are single-track with briars and buckthorn along the edges. I’ve done just what you said for smaller trouble areas, but this area really needs the intervention of machinery to get these invasives out.

It’s the closest trails to me by FAR though, so it’s the one we’re at the most.

What a nice resource but always frustrating when it’s not maintained quite as well as it should be!

If you keep striking out on the Western pad, maybe dyeing one would be an option? Rit makes a bright orange, or I’ve used this dye with fab results. It sticks better than rit.

I was thinking the same thing, to grab a tote and dunk this mayatex pad into some brilliant orange. It may not be blaze but I can get it brighter I think.

Bleach it first, and I bet you can get it as bright as you want! There are special color removers for this sort of thing. Like…hmmmmm…here:

Or

Fun project!

How about getting some blaze orange fleece and making your own pad cover? A yard would be inexpensive. I’ve never purchased from this place, but they carry it:

If it involves more than just cutting it, I’m out lol. I used to know how to sew but I can’t anymore.

I could always get a whole new pad with a blaze orange canvas cover, but I am very partial to my 5 Star felt pad and don’t want to switch.

Think of perhaps making a pad pillowcase, can’t get simpler than that. Or even, depending upon how heavy that fleece is, merely cutting out a square/rectangle and laying it on top of the pad (between the saddle and the pad), just to add the color.

There’s a very easy way to make no-sew dog beds – cut out two pieces of fleece large enough to cover a piece of foam with a few extra inches all the way around, then cut slits every half inch or so into that extra all the way around. Put the foam in-between the two layers of fleece, then tie the cut pieces together, top and bottom, all the way around. This technique might work to use the orange fleece to cover a pad, if the knots wouldn’t be irritating.

ETA to add photo of one I made umpteen years ago that’s still holding up

I was so astonished that you couldn’t find a western pad in blaze orange that I began looking. One big caveat: I don’t ride Western so I don’t know what kinds of pads are considered “good.” But what about this one:
Mayatex “San Juan” tangerine orange pad
or this one:

orange ‘show’ pad

or, for your Breyer horse, here’s a blaze orange western pad, to keep your model horse safe in the woods!

How about this:

You could fold it in half so it is under the saddle instead of using it as a quarter sheet.

The mayatex is the one I bought! It’s not nearly that bright in person. I was hoping for a blanket, so it can put it over my nice 5 Star pad, but I’m striking out.

The show blanket doesn’t look bright enough.

The fleece jobby from @Jarpur would be the surest bet. It’s weird this doesn’t exist!
