Help name this gray horse: He is now called STORM!

Please help name this sweet horse. A mom friend of mine just got her daughter her first horse. Horse is steel gray, 16.2, 5 y/o, a TB and will eventually be a hunter. He is sweet and happy, but busy and curious. He loves his new kid and she is mad about him. He comes with the name Rocky but kid does not like it at all. His show name is Premeditated and kid loves it. His barn name was supposed to be Tate, but kid knows an evil Tate, so that was thrown out.

Kid is a very concrete thinker, doesn’t understand abstract names at all. For example, Dorian makes no sense to her. She likes names where the connection between his color and the name is obvious. Current favorite is Stormy, and mom is less than enthusiastic. Other second tier names are Coal, Cinder, Shadow, and Magic. We need help, and fast, before Stormy sticks.

Fancy
Rain
Cloud

Sterling (Sterling silver)
Argent (old fashioned word for silver)
Cloud
Ash
Battleship
Granite
Stone

Why not let the kid name her horse Stormy if she likes it? I don’t see how that’s worse than any of the second tier names listed. It’s her new horse. I’d say let her enjoy it and worry about bigger issues.

This is the current thought, but even he kid isn’t sure that it is his name. Rocky is the one we are really worried about sticking because we know a yappy Pomeranian named Rocky. And Stormy isn’t an awful name, it just really doesn’t fit him… and all we can do while hearing it is think of Misty of Chincoteague’s foal. Kid wants other suggestions right now so we can stop calling him Gray Horse.

Steel
Mouse
Dove

Louie
Dancer
Remington (Remmie)
Moonshine

Torrit (grey) from Gamblin Artist Colours - because it’s such a cool story

I second Sterling and Cinder. Also Cloud since he will eventually grey out.
Smoke/Smokey
Haze
Mithril
Gandalf
Winter
Mystic
Ember
Frost
Boulder
Moon/Moonstone
Sage
Bling if he’s goofy XD

Could just be Storm? More serious/sophisticated without the ‘y’.

Frosty and Casper have been good names for a gray gelding as a first kid’s horse.
I have known several, some school horses, named Frosty and Casper and all were excellent kid’s horses.

My current horses came with names and kept it.
A name would have to be terrible not to keep it.
Rocky is fine, so is Stormy.

Naming a horse some times IS hard!

I don’t think Stormy is horrible, but how about Pewter.

First thing in my brain when I read steel grey is Steely Dan

I like Cloudy and Stormy and Casper!

Himmel is heaven auf Deutsch. Which is close to Schimmel which is what they call grey horses in Dutch (it means 'mold ).

Maybe Primo instead of Tate to connect with the show name?

I’m voting for Smokey - and give her a copy of Will Jame’s book to read.

Second choice - Tater, since he’s “sweet and happy, but busy and curious”. It’s a variation on what was suggested by the folks who’ve seen him, but not exactly, so the connection with the other may be gone.

Kid Rock

It has kid in it, for, her, and Rock, part of original name Rocky.

He’s a beautiful horse.

100% agree with this. She’s a little girl - the photo is adorable - and it’s her very first horse. Who hasn’t had a Stormy in their life? His coat looks just like a stormy sky, too. As she grows up she can shorten it to Storm if she likes, but there’s absolutely nothing wrong with Stormy. “Dorian”? LOL. Sheesh.

I thought we were giving the girl suggestions that she could choose from. Yes?

I agree, the kid should name the horse whatever she wants but the first thing that came to my mind after reading the show name was Primo

Grayson?
Flint?

Frosty gets my vote.
