First thing in my brain when I read steel grey is Steely Dan
This does have some, ehrm, adult connotations … but probably lost in the mists of time now.

Kid is a very concrete thinker, doesn’t understand abstract names at all. She likes names where the connection between his color and the name is obvious.
Concrete? (it’s grey after all!)
I also really like the name Grey or Gray, however you spell it.

Lol, this is very true. Not a name for a child’s horse. For those who are not literature fans, google is your friend.
Mercury
Stoney
Mouse
I like Sterling as well.
What about Ashton?
Pewter
I had a dog named Stormy and he eventually turned into Norman - I always kind of liked that

I will never hear the band without thinking of this now.
Pogo
He looks like a Sherman to me.
But I’d be okay with Stormy if that’s what the kid likes.
Smoky (from Smoky the Cowhorse) doesn’t work for me, since he was a grulla. But it is my all time fave book!
Cheif and I are on the same page apparently. The first name that popped into my mind was Remington, for Remington Steele. It would be cute shortened to Remmie.
I wanted to add, the few Rocky horses I have known happen to have all been bays.
This is the first one I know that was Rocky and grey.
So many good names already posted, but if the kid likes Stormy, that really is a good barn name, why not?
Sterling is cute.
Rockstar, Rocky for short?

Why not let the kid name her horse Stormy if she likes it? I don’t see how that’s worse than any of the second tier names listed. It’s her new horse. I’d say let her enjoy it and worry about bigger issues.
Seriously. This is her first horse. Let her name it and the rest of the world should butt out. If I were the kid, I would be royall pissed if my mother or any of her adult friends were acting like this. Talk about taking over someone else’s day. Why don’t you just go “quick - someone suggest better flowers than those my friend’s daughter wants for her wedding, before she orders the yellow roses!!”
You are keeping Premeditated as the show name?
Does his barn name have to be a real word associated with his color? His color is going to change, that is part of the reason I ask.
The first thing that jumped into my head with a show name of Premeditated is Medi.
Yes, I know it is not a real word, but it rolls off the tongue well and it is cute sounding.
Adding “Mr.” or “Sir” to the front of the name might give it more charm than just the one-word version. Sir Stormy or Mr, Flint is kinda cute.
Or, use initials?
Gee (for Gray). Or BG (Big Gray)
If we’re allowed to skip the color theme, I love Primo!
I agree with some of the others…if this horse being named “Stormy” is the worst thing to happen to you today, life is pretty awesome.
I vote Superman, or Clark or Kent.
Man of steel and all that
Premeditated aka Tater!!!
Barn name Derek (Zoolander), show name Blue Steel
